    Abstract: A rapid and efficient microwave-assisted synthesis method for the preparation of 1-aroyl-3-(5-aryl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)urea is described. These 1,3,4-thiadiazole aroylureas (5a–f) were identified by IR, 1 H NMR, elemental analyses and N-[5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-ylcarbamoyl]-2,6-difluorobenzamide was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The target compounds were prepared under microwave in a shorter reaction time compared with conventional heating methods.

    Abstract: One pot synthesis of 2-(substitutedphenyl)-3-[5-(substitutedphenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl]thiazolidin-4-one was developed by the reaction of 1,3,4-thiadiazole, substituted benzaldehyde and mercaptoacetic acid. These compounds were identified by IR, 1 H NMR, elemental analyses and 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-[5-(3-methylphenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl]thiazolidin-4-one was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

    Abstract: Particle gradation and water content are important factors affecting shear strength of soil. However, due to chemical cementation and molecular attraction, loess particles commonly stick together forming conglomerations. Till date, the superposition effect of water content and conglomeration gradation on loess shear strength has rarely been studied and undeniably requires further systematic explorations and development. In this study, loess samples were prepared with three conglomeration gradations and five water contents, and the direct shear tests were systematically performed. The shear strength of sample 1 (continuous conglomeration gradation) was found to be the best, followed by sample 2 (large size conglomerations), and sample 3 (small size conglomerations). The difference of samples’ shear strength decreased with increasing water content, and almost closed to zero when water content was 20%. The cohesion of samples first increased and then decreased with increasing water content, the maximum cohesion occurred at 10% water content. The internal friction angles decreased with increasing water content, and reached similar minimum values when the water content was 15%. The increased percentage values of cohesion and internal friction angle caused by conglomeration gradation are in the range of 33.2%–42.1% and 9.8%–32.5%, respectively. Finally, the empirical formulas for water content-cohesion and water content-internal friction angle of different conglomeration gradations samples were established, and the calculated values are in good agreement with test data. The effect of loess conglomeration gradation on shear strength decreased with increasing water content. When the water content was less than 15%, using a good conglomeration graduation could effectively improve loss shear strength.

    Abstract: Cap-assisted endoscopic sclerotherapy is a new interventional therapy for internal hemorrhoids and rectal prolapse under colonoscopy. The proper length of the endoscopic injection needle is the core for performing cap-assisted endoscopic sclerotherapy well with more benefits and less complications. However, no data are currently available to guide endoscopists to consider the length of injection needle before cap-assisted endoscopic sclerotherapy. This study is designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of cap-assisted endoscopic sclerotherapy with long or short injection needle in the treatment of internal hemorrhoids. Methods: This is a nationwide multi-center, prospective, single-blind and randomized controlled trial. Patients with grade I-II internal hemorrhoids who have failed to conservative treatments and grade III internal hemorrhoids who are not suitable for surgery or refuse surgery will be included. Participants will be randomized 1:1 into either long or short injection needle group. The primary outcome is the recurrence rate of internal hemorrhoids 24 weeks after cap-assisted endoscopic sclerotherapy. The secondary outcomes are as follows: (1) symptom severity score, (2) three-level EuroQoL five dimensions health scale scores, (3) occurrence of adverse events and severe adverse events, and (4) patients’ attitudes toward cap-assisted endoscopic sclerotherapy. Data collection will be conducted before and during operation, the 1st day, 1st week, 2nd week, and 24th week after cap-assisted endoscopic sclerotherapy. Discussion: The outcome of this study is expected to provide a practical clinical protocol of cap-assisted endoscopic sclerotherapy for patients with internal hemorrhoids and promote the use of this new endoscopic technique. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03917056. Registered on 12 April 2019.

    Abstract: Little is known about the impact of haemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We compared HRQoL between conventional in-centre HD and home-based PD in 1082 newly diagnosed kidney failure patients. Methods: This was an open-label, randomised, non-inferiority trial of adult patients with a diagnosis of end-stage kidney disease (estimated glomerular filtration rate ≤ 15 mL/min/1.73 m 2 ) requiring maintenance dialysis from 36 sites in China randomised 1:1 to receive PD or conventional in-centre HD. The primary outcome was the ‘Burden of Kidney Disease’ assessed using the Kidney Disease Quality of Life-Short Form (KDQoL-SF) survey over 48 weeks and the main secondary outcomes were the remaining scales of KDQoL-SF and all-cause mortality. The effect of PD versus HD on the primary outcome was compared by their geometric mean (GM) ratio, and non-inferiority was defined by the lower bound of a one-sided 95% confidence interval (CI) 〉 0.9. Results: A total of 725 subjects completed the trial per protocol (395 PD and 330 HD, mean age 49.8 (standard deviation (SD) 14.4) years, 41.4% women). For the primary outcome, the mean (SD) change in ‘Burden of Kidney Disease’ over 48 weeks was 2.61 (1.27) in PD group and 2.58 (1.35) in HD group, and the GM ratio (95% CI) was 1.059 (0.908–1.234), exceeding the limit for non-inferiority. For the secondary outcomes, the PD and HD groups were similar in all scales. There were 17 and 31 deaths in PD and HD groups, respectively. Patients receiving PD had more adverse events, adverse event leading to hospitalisation and serious adverse events compared to those allocated to HD, but adverse events leading to death and discontinuation of the trial were not different between PD and HD. Conclusions: In this trial, PD may be non-inferior to HD on the ‘Burden of Kidney Disease’ among Chinese kidney failure patients who are of younger age and have lower comorbidity after 48 weeks’ follow-up.

    Abstract: Decellularization is the process by which cells are discharged from tissues/organs, but all of the essential cues for cell preservation and homeostasis are retained in a three-dimensional structure of the organ and its extracellular matrix components. During tissue decellularization, maintenance of the native ultrastructure and composition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is extremely acceptable. For recellularization, the scaffold/matrix is seeded with cells, the final goal being to form a practical organ. In this review, we focus on the biological properties of the ECM that remains when a variety of decellularization methods are used, comparing recellularization technologies, including bioreactor expansion for perfusion-based bioartificial organs, and we discuss cell sources. In the future, decellularization–recellularization procedures may solve the problem of organ assembly on demand.

    Abstract: The study aimed to investigate the role of high Krüppel-like factor 5 (KLF5) expression on the pathogenesis of congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lungs (CCAML) in mice. Methods A mouse model of high KLF5 expression in the lungs was established. KLF5 expression and the pulmonary lumen diameter were examined by immunohistochemistry to determine a successful model. Basement membrane damage and activity of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) were examined. After an adenovirus carrying KLF5 gene transfection in lung adenocarcinoma (H441) was created, changes in expression and activity of MMP-9 were determined. Results In a mouse model with high KLF5 expression, the pulmonary lumen was markedly enlarged, indicating establishment of CCAML. The basement membrane was degraded, and MMP-9 activity was significantly higher in the model group compared with the control group. Moreover, mice in a cellular model after transfection also showed higher MMP-9 activity than did controls. Conclusion High KLF5 expression may play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of CCAML, partly through regulating the activity of MMP-9.

    Abstract: A new bufadienolide named dyscinobufotalin (1), along with twenty known bufadienolides (2–21) were isolated from the venom of Bufo bufo gargarizans. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configuration of the new natural product 2 was determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction and the complete NMR data for 3 was delivered for the first time. Both compounds 4 and 8 showed comparable α-glucosidase inhibitory activity (IC 50 values of 0.25 and 0.26 μM, respectively) to the positive control acarbose (IC 50 value of 0.42 μM), and 5 displayed potent inhibitory activity on acetylcholinesterase with an IC 50 value of 0.12 μM. Moreover, 5, 8 and 13 presented moderate toxicity against brine shrimp.

    Abstract: Psychological symptoms are common among adolescents in China, which are associated with various negative consequences. There has been a pressing need for additional research of factors responsible for the occurrence of psychological symptoms during this developmental period, among which childhood maltreatment, personal coping style, one’s levels of social support, and self-esteem deserve our attention. The association between childhood maltreatment and psychological symptoms is evident; however, the possible mediating effect of the other three factors mentioned above remains unclear. Hence, the current study aims to investigate the possible mediating roles of social support, coping style, and self-esteem in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and the development of psychological symptoms among adolescents. An adolescent-based health survey was conducted between 2013 and 2014 in 15 schools in China. A total of 9,704 students (aged 11–19 years) were enrolled and measures on childhood maltreatment, social support, coping styles, self-esteem, and psychological symptoms were completed. It was found that childhood maltreatment was positively correlated with psychological symptoms and negative coping styles, and negatively correlated with social support, positive coping styles, and self-esteem ( p 〈 .001). Social support, coping styles, and self-esteem mediated the relationship between childhood maltreatment and psychological symptoms. The estimated effect of childhood maltreatment on the occurrence of psychological symptoms could be explained by the mediation of social support, positive coping styles, negative coping styles, and self-esteem, whose ratio of roles came to 13.8%, 7.5%, 20.9%, and 10.3%, respectively. These findings indicate a need to promote social support, self-esteem, and positive coping styles, and decrease the level of negative coping styles, to markedly reduce the impact of psychological symptoms of childhood maltreatment among adolescents.
