    Abstract: Stem cell transplantation has been applied to treat spinal cord injury (SCI) in clinical trials for many years. However, the clinical efficacies of stem cell transplantation in SCI have been quite diverse. The purpose of our study was to systematically investigate the efficacy of stem cell transplantation in patients with SCI. The PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid-Medline, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP, Wanfang, and SinoMed databases were searched until October 27, 2020. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed by Review Manager 5.3 and R. Nine studies ( n = 328) were included, and the overall risk of bias was moderate. The ASIA Impairment Scale (AIS) grading improvement rate was analyzed in favor of stem cell transplantation group [odds ratio (OR) = 6.06, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.16–11.62, P 〈 0.00001]. Urodynamic indices also showed improvement in bladder function. In subgroup analyses, the results indicated that in patients with complete (AIS A) SCI, with the application of cell numbers between n*(10 7 –10 8 ), two cell types (i.e., bone marrow–derived mesenchymal stem cells and bone marrow mononuclears), and treatment time of more than 6 months, stem cell transplantation was more beneficial for sensorimotor function ( P 〈 0.05 for all groups). The risk of fever incidence in the stem cell transplantation group was 4.22 (95% CI: 1.7–10.22, P = 0.001), and principal component analysis (PCA) suggested it was more related to transplanted cell numbers. Thus, stem cell transplantation can promote functional recovery in SCI patients. Moreover, the type and quantity of transplanted stem cells and treatment time are important factors affecting the therapeutic effect of stem cell transplantation in SCI. Further studies are needed to evaluate the effects and elucidate the mechanisms of these factors on stem cell therapy in SCI.

    Abstract: Panax notoginseng saponins are extracted from Chinese ginseng— Panax notoginseng Ledeb—and are known to have therapeutic anti-inflammatory effects. However, the precise mechanism behind their anti-inflammatory effects remains relatively unknown. To better understand how Panax notoginseng saponins exert their therapeutic benefit, we tested them in a rat model of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Rats received a tail vein injection of Panax notoginseng saponins and were administered 5% sodium taurocholate 2 h later. Pancreatic tissue was then harvested and levels of miR-181b, FSTL1, TREM1, TLR4, TRAF6, IRAK1, p-Akt, p-p38MAPK, NF-κBp65, and p-IκB-α were determined using Western blot and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were used to determine serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), TREM1, interleukin (IL)-6, ACAM-1, IL-8, and IL-12 and DNA-bound levels of NF-KB65 and TLR4 in pancreatic and ileum tissue. Serum levels of lipase and amylase, pancreatic myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, and pancreatic water content were also measured. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was used for all histological analyses. Results indicated upregulation of miR-181b, but negligible levels of FSTL1, p-p38MAPK, TLR4, TRAF6, p-Akt, IRAK1, TREM1, p-NF-κBp65, and p-IκB-α, as well as negligible DNA-bound levels of NF-KB65 and TLR4. We also observed lower levels of IL-8, IL-6, ACAM-1, TNF-α, MPO, and IL-12 in the Panax notoginseng saponin–treated group when compared with controls. In addition, Panax notoginseng saponin–treated rats had significantly reduced serum levels of lipase and amylase. Histological analyses confirmed that Panax notoginseng saponin treatment significantly reduced taurocholate-induced pancreatic inflammation. Collectively, our results suggest that Panax notoginseng saponin treatment attenuated acute pancreatitis and pancreatic inflammation by increasing miR-181b signaling. These findings suggest that Panax notoginseng saponins have therapeutic potential in the treatment of taurocholate-induced SAP.

    Abstract: Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is considered an attractive imaging technique to evaluate tumor microcirculation. However, the validity of CEUS for assessing laryngeal carcinoma is unclear. Purpose To compare the performance of CEUS with conventional US and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) in the diagnosis and preoperative T-staging of laryngeal carcinoma. Material and Methods Forty-one consecutive patients with laryngeal carcinoma underwent conventional high-frequency US, CEUS, and CECT before surgery. The CEUS characteristics of laryngeal carcinoma were recorded. The imaging findings of CEUS and conventional US were compared with CECT findings and the postoperative pathological examination. Results CEUS showed hyperenhancement in 38 cases and isoenhancement in three cases. Homogeneous distribution of contrast agent was found in 20 cases and heterogeneous distribution in 21 cases, of which 16 cases showed local perfusion defects. In the enhanced phase, rapid entry was observed in 37 cases, synchronous entry was observed in two cases, and slow entry was observed in two cases. Rapid exit was observed in 25 cases and slow exit was observed in 16 cases. The pretherapeutic T-staging accuracy was not significantly different between conventional US, CEUS, and CECT ( P ≥ 0.500). A high sensitivity and specificity were achieved by CEUS in the evaluation of involvement of thyroid cartilage. Conclusion Compared with conventional US and CECT, CEUS has a reliable initial T-staging accuracy and diagnostic properties for detecting laryngeal cartilage invasion.

    Abstract: Dialectical beliefs emphasize constant change, tolerance of contradiction, and holistic perception. This research examined the relationship between dialectical beliefs and proenvironmental behaviors. Study 1a showed that stronger dialectical beliefs were associated with fewer proenvironmental behaviors among Chinese participants; this result was replicated in Study 1b. To examine the negative relationship between dialectical beliefs and proenvironmental behaviors across cultures, Study 2 recruited both native Chinese and European Americans and replicated the results conceptually by measuring proenvironmental behaviors in a hypothetical shopping scenario. Study 3 provided further generally supportive evidence by considering the influence of both dialectical beliefs and interdependent self-construal on proenvironmental behaviors between native Chinese and European Canadians. Finally, a meta-analysis of the obtained results revealed a weak but significant negative association between dialectical beliefs and proenvironmental behaviors. Theoretical implications for cross-cultural environmental research and practical implications for proenvironmental campaigns were discussed.

    Abstract: The aim of the study is to evaluate the feasibility of visual inspection with acetic acid/Lugol’s iodine (VIA/VILI) as a primary screening method for cervical lesions in low-resource settings in China. Participants underwent VIA/VILI, and, if positive, received colposcopy and direct biopsy of visible lesions. Women who were negative for VIA/VILI or who were diagnosed with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 1 were re-screened the following year with the same procedure. In total, 10,269 women received VIA/VILI (of whom 8263, twice). Overall test positivity was 8.07% (1495/18532) for VIA/VILI, 33.44% (500/1495) for colposcopy, and the incidence of pathology-confirmed CIN1, CIN2/3 and cervical cancer was 0.85% (87/10,269), 0.53% (54/10,269) and 0.02% (2/10,269), respectively. Women aged 30–39 years at screening had higher rates of CIN2+ (include CIN2, CIN3 and cervical cancer). Our study indicates that VIA/VILI is a simple, feasible, and effective primary cervical cancer screening method in an impoverished, rural community that lacks access to standard medical care.

    Abstract: The nature of activation of methane on supported nickel catalyst has been investigated by means of temperature programmed surface reaction (TPSR), temperature programmed desorption (TPD), X-ray photoelectron energy spectroscopy (XPS) and pulse reaction and a synergetic mechanism of carbon dioxide reforming with methane is tentatively postulated. TPSR, TPD and XPS results indicate that carbidic C α , carbonaceous Cβ and carbidic clusters C γ surface carbon species formed by decomposition of methane show different surface mobility, thermal stability and reactivity. C α and C β species on the nickel surface are thermally unstable and can be rapidly converted into C γ species upon increasing temperature. The carbidic carbon is a very active and important intermediate in carbon dioxide reforming with methane and the carbidic clusters C γ species might be the precursor of the surface carbon deposition.

    Abstract: A series of novel C-glycosides of heterocyclic derivatives containing a pyrimidin-2-amine or a 1 H-pyrazolo[3,4- b]pyridine moiety were synthesized using condensation re actions of the substituted puerarin with guanidine or 3-amino-5-hydroxypyrazole in methyl alcohol. Their chemical structures were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. In addition, their biological activity has been demonstrated by in vitro evaluation against the human leukemia cells K562 and human prostate cancer cells PC-3 by MTT-based assays, using the commercially available standard drug of cis-platin as a positive control. The results also demonstrated that most of the compounds showed considerable cytotoxicity to these two cell lines of K562 and PC-3, and indicated that novel C-glycosides of heterocyclic derivatives may be potential leads for further biological screenings and may generate drug-like molecules.

    Abstract: It is unclear how clinical and endoscopic factors affect the attainment of endoscopic remission (ER) in patients with small bowel Crohn’s disease (SB-CD) who are infliximab-naïve. Objectives: We aimed to identify the effect of different factors on attaining ER using double-balloon endoscopy (DBE) evaluation. Design: A single-center retrospective observational study was conducted from 1 January 2018 to 30 November 2022. Among 262 patients who were screened for isolated SB-CD by baseline DBE, 108 patients were assessed for effectiveness during maintenance infliximab therapy by a second DBE evaluation. Methods: DBE findings before and after infliximab therapy were compared. ER was defined as a simple endoscopic score for CD (SES-CD) below 3, and segmental ER as SES-CD activity of 0. Multivariate regression with calculations of odds ratios (OR) was used to determine the impact of different factors on attaining ER. Results: In all, 41 patients (38.0%) achieved ER. An elevated C-reactive protein at week 6 was independently associated with a decreased probability of ER [OR: 0.86, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.75–0.98, p = 0.03]. Segmental ER of the terminal ileum, rather than the proximal ileum, was associated with a higher rate of ER (60.9% versus 38.2%, p = 0.01). High baseline SES-CD (⩾16) was unrelated to overall ER. For patients with disease in the terminal ileum, those with moderate/severe disease were less likely to attain segmental ER than those with mild disease [adjusted odds ratios (aOR): 0.27, 95% CI: 0.09–0.83, p = 0.02] . A large ulcer in the terminal ileum was associated with a lower rate of segmental ER (aOR: 0.18, 95% CI: 0.06–0.56, p = 0.01). Conclusion: For infliximab-naïve patients with SB-CD, the overall severity of the endoscopic score was unrelated to attainment of ER. Patients were less likely to attain segmental ER if they had greater endoscopic inflammation or larger ulcers in the terminal ileum.

    Abstract: Formaldehyde (FA) causes neurotoxicity and contributes to the occurrence of neurodegenerative diseases. However, the mechanism of FA-induced neurotoxicity has not been fully elucidated. Ferritinophagy, an autophagy process of ferritin mediated by the nuclear receptor coactivator 4 (NCOA4), is a potential mechanism of neurotoxicity. In this study, we explored whether ferritinophagy is associated with the neurotoxicity of FA. Our results showed that FA (50, 100, 200 μM; 24 h) exposure upregulated ferritinophagy in the mouse hippocampal neuronal HT22 cells, which was evidenced by the upregulated autophagic flux, the increased colocalizations of NCOA4 with ferritin heavy chain (FTH1) and NCOA4 with microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain-3B (LC3B), the augmented expression of NCOA4, and the reduced content of FTH1. We also found that FA (0.1, 1, and 10 μmol, i.c.v., 7d) administration boosted ferritinophagy in the hippocampus of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, which was demonstrated by the accumulated autophagosomes, the increased expressions of LC3II/I and NCOA4, and the decreased contents of p62 and FTH1 in the hippocampus. Further, we confirmed that inhibition of ferritinophagy by silencing the expression of NCOA4 decreased FA-induced toxic damage in HT22 cells. These results indicated that FA induces neurotoxicity by promoting ferritinophagy. Our findings suggest a potential mechanism insight into the FA-induced neurotoxicity, which in turn provides a new thought for the treatment of FA-related neurodegenerative diseases.
