    Abstract: Mosquito-borne diseases are a consistent problem in Vietnam. Additionally, freshwater snail species are agricultural pests and are known to be intermediate hosts for several parasitic worms. There is a need for new and complementary botanical pesticidal agents for controlling these pests and essential oils have shown promise. In this work, essential oils from 2 species of Callicarpa ( C. rubella and C. sinuata) and 4 species of Premna ( P. chevalieri, P. corymbosa, P. maclurei, and P. tomentosa) were screened for mosquito larvicidal activity against Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus and for molluscicidal activity against 3 freshwater snail species, Gyraulus convexiusculus, Pomacea canaliculata, and Tarebia granifera. Callicarpa rubella essential oil showed exceptional larvicidal activity against Cx. quinquefasciatus with 24-h LC 50 of 9.8 μg/mL. In addition to C. rubella, the essential oils of P. chevalieri and P. tomentosa showed notable molluscicidal activities against P. canaliculata with LC 90 values ≤ 20 μg/mL. These Callicarpa and Premna essential oils were all rich in sesquiterpenes and should be considered for continued investigation as botanical pesticidal agents.

    Abstract: A new ent-kaurane glycoside, annoglabasin H (1), and three known ent-kauranes, annoglabasin E (2), annoglabasin B (3), and 19-nor- ent-kaurent-4-ol-17-oic acid (4) were isolated from the fruits of Annona glabra. Their structures were determined by the combination of spectroscopic and chemical methods, including 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopy, as well as by comparison with the NMR data reported in the literature. The cytotoxic activities of these compounds were evaluated on four human cancer cell lines, LU-1, MCF-7, SK-Mel2, and KB. Compound 1 exhibited significant cytotoxic activity on all tested human cancer cell lines with IC 50 values ranging from 3.7 to 4.6 μM.

    Abstract: This study was performed to determine the outcomes of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who developed hypoxemic respiratory failure necessitating high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy and to identify the predictors of HFNC therapy success. Methods This retrospective observational study involved all patients treated with HFNC therapy at a center for COVID-19 in Viet Nam from August to October 2021. Results The study recruited 302 patients. Of these 302 patients, 171 (56.6%) underwent successful HFNC therapy, and the all-cause mortality rate was 33.44%. Non-critical COVID-19 and a higher respiratory rate–oxygenation (ROX) index at 48 hours after initiating HFNC therapy were independently correlated with HFNC therapy success. The statistically significant predictors of HFNC therapy success were younger age, non-critical COVID-19, a higher platelet count when starting HFNC therapy, and a higher ROX index at 24, 36, and 48 hours after HFNC therapy initiation. Conclusions HFNC therapy appears to be effective in patients with COVID-19 who develop respiratory failure requiring respiratory support. Non-critical COVID-19 and a higher ROX index measured 48 hours after HFNC therapy initiation might serve as predictive factors for the success of HFNC therapy.

    Abstract: Breast self-examination (BSE) is a simple, feasible, and suitable method for breast cancer screening in low–middle setting countries. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and practice of BSE among female textile workers in Vietnam. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1036 female workers, aged 43.9 ± 3.1 years old, who were working in 4 textile enterprises in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, in 2016. Overall, 22.7% of participants showed sufficient knowledge on BSE; 15.2% performed monthly BSE; and 7.7% completely performed all 5 steps of BSE. The prevalence of insufficient BSE knowledge was higher among participants with low level of education (odds ratio [OR]: 1.71; 95% confidence interval [CI] : 1.22-2.39, below vs above secondary school), and those whose husbands were farmers or workers (OR: 1.76; 95% CI: 1.27-2.45, compared to other sectors). This prevalence was, however, negatively associated with receiving information on BSE (OR: 0.16; 95% CI: 0.11-0.23, yes vs no). The prevalence of insufficient BSE practice was also higher among females with husbands who were farmers or workers (OR: 1.67; 95% CI: 1.15-2.43, compared to other sectors). In contrast, it was much lower among participants who had history of breast-related diseases (OR: 0.46; 95% CI: 0.24-0.88, yes vs no), received BSE information (OR: 0.13; 95% CI: 0.08-0.19, yes vs no), and had sufficient overall BSE knowledge (OR: 0.09; 95% CI: 0.06-0.13, yes vs no), compared to those who did not. There was a low prevalence of sufficient BSE knowledge (22.7%) and practice (15.8%) among female textile workers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Low level of education and not being provided BSE information were associated with insufficient BSE knowledge and practice among Vietnamese female textile workers. Health education programs are essential to encourage and improve women’s knowledge and practice of BSE.

    Abstract: The paper focuses on the nonlinear vibration of functionally graded graphene nanoplatelet reinforced composite doubly curved shallow shells resting on elastic foundations. The graphene nanoplatelet reinforced composites are assumed to be distributed uniformly and functionally graded through the thickness. The material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent and are estimated through the Halpin–Tsai micromechanical model, while the Poisson’s ratio, density mass, and thermal expansion are implemented by the rule of mixtures. The mathematical formulation is developed based on the classical shell theory and Von Karman-Donnell geometrical nonlinearity assumption. The dynamical responses of a simply supported functionally graded-graphene nanoplatelet reinforced composite doubly curved shallow shells are obtained by employing the Airy’s stress function and the Galerkin’s method. The responses of nonlinear vibration as time history, frequency-amplitude curve, phase plane graphs, and Poincare maps are carried out in this paper. In addition, the effects of the environment, graphene nanoplatelets weight fraction, graphene nanoplatelets distribution patterns, and thickness-to-length ratio are scrutinized. The obtained results are also compared and validated with those of other studies.

    Abstract: Children living with HIV (CLHIV) on prolonged antiretroviral therapy (ART) are at risk for lipid and glucose abnormalities. Prevalence and associated factors were assessed in a multicentre, Asian longitudinal paediatric cohort. Methods CLHIV were considered to have lipid or glucose abnormalities if they had total cholesterol ≥200 mg/dL, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ≤35 mg/dL, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) ≥100 mg/dL, triglycerides (TG) ≥110 mg/dL, or fasting glucose 〉 110 mg/dL. Factors associated with lipid and glucose abnormalities were assessed by logistic regression. Results Of 951 CLHIV, 52% were male with a median age of 8.0 (interquartile range [IQR] 5.0–12.0) years at ART start and 15.0 (IQR 12.0–18.0) years at their last clinic visit. 89% acquired HIV perinatally, and 30% had ever used protease inhibitors (PIs). Overall, 225 (24%) had hypercholesterolemia, 105 (27%) low HDL, 213 (58%) high LDL, 369 (54%) hypertriglyceridemia, and 130 (17%) hyperglycemia. Hypercholesterolemia was more likely among females (versus males, aOR 1.93, 95% CI 1.40–2.67). Current PIs use was associated with hypercholesterolemia (current use: aOR 1.54, 95% CI 1.09–2.20); low HDL (current use: aOR 3.16, 95% CI 1.94–5.15; prior use: aOR 10.55, 95% CI 2.53–43.95); hypertriglyceridemia (current use: aOR 3.90, 95% CI 2.65–5.74; prior use: aOR 2.89, 95% CI 1.31–6.39); high LDL (current use: aOR 1.74, 95% CI 1.09–2.76); and hyperglycemia (prior use: aOR 2.43, 95% CI 1.42–4.18). Conclusion More than half and one-fifth of CLHIV have dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia, respectively. Routine paediatric HIV care should include metabolic monitoring. The association between PIs use and dyslipidemia emphasizes the importance of rapidly transitioning to integrase inhibitor-containing regimens.

    Abstract: Coxiella burnetii is an obligate intracellular bacterium that causes the zoonotic infectious disease, Q fever. The common clinical presentation is fever, hepatitis, and pneumonia; laboratory examination could reveal pancytopenia, elevated liver enzymes. In bone marrow, many fibrin ring granulomas, also known as “Doughnut” granulomas can be seen and suggest the diagnosis of Q fever. However, these bone marrow granulomas can also be presented in infectious diseases by other pathogens such as EBV, CMV, and HBV; therefore, other serology or PCR—based tests are needed to confirm the diagnosis of Q fever. We report the first case of acute Q fever in Vietnam, presented as a fever of unknown origin with hepatitis in a 53-year-old male patient. A bone marrow biopsy was performed and showed various fibrin ring granulomas; therefore, Coxiella was suspected and the diagnosis was confirmed by PCR. Some infectious diseases can cause specific changes in the bone marrow, such as Doughnut granulomas in Q fever. These features can help direct the diagnosis and decide earlier treatment for the patient.
