Kurzfassung: Hemorrhagic complication is a disastrous complication of intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) embolization. This study was to analyze the possible risk factors for the hemorrhagic complication caused by endovascular embolization of DAVFs. Methods From January 2012 to July 2016, a total of 267 patients with intracranial DAVFs received endovascular Onyx embolization at our hospital. The demographic information, clinical presentation, angiographic features, endovascular treatment and hemorrhagic complications were reviewed. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the risk factors contributing to the post-procedural hemorrhagic complications. Results In 267 patients of DAVF treated with endovascular embolization, procedure-related hemorrhagic complication occurred in 12 (4.5%) patients. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that the pial arterial supplier (OR 13.630; 95% CI, 1.556–119.368; P = 0.018), giant venous aneurysm (OR 15.196; 95% CI, 2.505–92.183; P = 0.003) and Onyx volume ≥ 6 ml (OR 1.138; 95% CI, 1.006–1.288; P = 0.040) were significant factors associated with these hemorrhagic complications. Conclusions Hemorrhagic complications associated with endovascular DAVF embolization are not negligible. The pial arterial supplier, giant venous aneurysm and higher Onyx volume in one session may be risk factors for endovascular DAVF embolization.

Kurzfassung: Lung cancer is listed as the most common reason for cancer-related death all over the world despite diagnostic improvements and the development of chemotherapy and targeted therapies. MicroRNAs control both physiological and pathological processes including development and cancer. A microRNA-9 to 1 (miR-9 to 1) overexpression model in lung cancer cell lines was established and miR-9 to 1 was found to significantly suppress the proliferation rate in lung cancer cell lines, colony formation in vitro, and tumorigenicity in nude mice of A549 cells. Ubiquitin-like containing PHD and RING finger domains 1 (UHRF1) was then identified to direct target of miR-9 to 1. The inhibition of UHRF1 by miR-9 to 1 causes G1 arrest and p15, p16, and p21 were re-expressed in miR-9 to 1 group in mRNA level and protein level. Silence of UHRF1 expression in A549 cells resulted in the similar re-expression of p15, p16, p21 which is similar with miR-9 to 1 infection. Therefore, we concluded that UHRF1 is a new target for miR-9 to 1 to suppress cell proliferation by re-expression of tumor suppressors p15, p16, and p21 mediated by UHRF1.

Kurzfassung: Microvascular morphology and pathological changes in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) placentas and normal placentas were observed via vascular casting technology, electron microscopy, and pathological detection technology. Vascular structure and histological morphology changes in GDM placentas were examined to generate basic experimental data for the diagnosis and prognostic determination of GDM. Methods This case–control study involving 60 placentas, 30 from healthy controls and 30 from patients with GDM. Differences in size, weight, volume, umbilical cord diameter, and gestational age were assessed. Histological changes in the placentas in the two groups were analyzed and compared. A placental vessel casting model was constructed using a self-setting dental powder technique, to compare the two groups. The placental cast microvessels of the two groups were compared using scanning electron microscopy. Results There were no significant differences in maternal age or gestational age between the GDM group and the control group ( p 〉 .05). The size, weight, volume, and thickness of the placentas in the GDM group were significantly greater than those in the control group, as was umbilical cord diameter ( p 〈 .05). Immature villus, fibrinoid necrosis, calcification, and vascular thrombosis were significantly greater in the placental mass in the GDM group ( p 〈 .05). The terminal branches of the microvessels in diabetic placenta casts were sparse, with significantly fewer ends and lower villous volume ( p 〈 .05). Conclusion Gestational diabetes can cause gross and histological changes in the placenta, particularly placental microvascular changes.

Kurzfassung: An outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) took place in Wuhan, China, by the end of 2019, and the disease continues to spread all over the world. The number of patients is increasing rapidly, a large number of infected patients is critically ill, and the mortality is high. However, information on COVID-19 patients is limited, and its clinical characteristics have not been fully studied. Objectives: To compare the performances of point-of-care lung ultrasound (LUS) and bedside chest X-ray in assessing the condition of COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Methods: This observational study enrolled 42 COVID-19 patients with ARDS who were admitted to the Department of Critical Care Medicine of the Wuhan Union Hospital from February to April 2020. The point-of-care LUS characteristics of the COVID-19 patients with ARDS were summarized, and the performances of LUS and bedside chest X-ray in assessing the patient’s condition were compared. Results: Most of the 42 patients were elderly individuals with chronic clinical diseases. The proportion of patients older than 60 years old was 85.7%. All patients were given invasive mechanical ventilation; eight (19.0%) of them received venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support. LUS has evident advantages in detecting lung consolidation, patchy shadows, and pleural thickening, and pleural line changes in particular. The receiver operating characteristic analysis indicated that the sensitivity, Youden index, and kappa value for detecting COVID-19 patients with ARDS were higher for LUS than the chest X-ray. Conclusion: LUS has better diagnostic accuracy and sensitivity in COVID-19 patients with ARDS than the chest X-ray.

Kurzfassung: Metastasis is the primary cause of death in patients with breast cancer. Although VEGF-A, C and D are considered to be prime factors in lymph node metastasis in breast cancer, the published studies have conflicting conclusions. Methods To resolve this conflict, we conducted a meta-analysis of 37 studies (n = 5,001 patients) evaluating the correlation between VEGF-A, C and D immunohistochemical expression and lymph node metastasis (LNM). The meta-analysis included 22 studies of VEGF-A, 17 of VEGF-C, and 6 of VEGF-D. The relationships between VEGF-A, C and D and clinicopathological parameters were also examined. Results The results showed a significant association between VEGF-A or VEGF-C overexpression and LNM (risk ratio [RR] = 1.28 [95% CI 1.04-1.58] , p = 0.02; and RR = 1.36 [95% CI 1.07-1.72], p = 0.01, respectively). Subgroup evaluation showed a significant association between VEGF-A, C and D overexpression and LNM when analyses were limited to Asian patients (RR = 1.78 [95% CI 1.28-2.46] , p = 0.0005; RR = 1.38 [95% CI 1.04-1.84], p = 0.03, and RR = 2.62 [95% CI 1.35-5.09] , p = 0.004, respectively). VEGF-A overexpression was significantly associated with lymph vessel invasion (RR = 1.86 [95% CI 1.33-2.60], p = 0.0003). Overexpression of VEGF-C or VEGF-D was significantly associated with HER-2 positivity (RR = 1.30 [95% CI 1.06-1.59] , p = 0.01; and RR = 1.75 [95% CI 1.01-3.03], p = 0.05, respectively). Conclusions With some limitations, our meta-analysis indicated that VEGF-A and C could predict LNM in patients with breast cancer, particularly Asian patients.

Kurzfassung: Cavernous hemangiomas (CHs) of the adrenal gland are extremely rare. To date, only a few studies of adrenal CH imaging have been reported. Purpose To analyze the computed tomography (CT) imaging findings of adrenal CHs. Material and Methods Ten cases of adrenal CHs confirmed by a histopathological examination were retrospectively analyzed. All of the patients had undergone unenhanced and enhanced CT examinations, and eight had also undergone multiphase CT enhancement examinations. CT characteristics, including shape, size, margin, attenuation, and enhancement patterns, were analyzed. Results The study included six women and four men with a mean age of 49.2 years (age range, 25–62 years) and no signs of abnormal endocrine activity. The unenhanced CTs showed well-defined, heterogeneous ( n = 8) or homogeneous ( n = 2) density masses with scattered ( n = 8) or spread calcifications ( n = 2) in six tumors. In the contrast-enhanced CTs, seven tumors appeared to be marked with heterogeneous enhancement, whereas three cases exhibited no obvious enhancement. The evaluation of the pattern of dynamic enhancement in eight patients revealed that the tumors showed early peripheral enhancement ( n = 4), early central enhancement ( n = 1), and mixed enhancement ( n = 1) with progressive partial filling-in, and no obvious enhancement in any phases ( n = 2). Conclusion Adrenal CHs should be included in the differential diagnosis when an adrenal neoplasm is incidentally found and appears as a well-defined, heterogeneous mass with calcifications and various enhancement patterns, including heterogeneous enhancement with characteristic progressive partial filling-in, as well as lack of enhancement in any phase.

Kurzfassung: Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy was used to discriminate different species of freshwater fish samples. Samples from seven freshwater fish species of the family Cyprinidae (black carp ( Mylopharyngodon piceus), grass carp ( Ctenopharyngodon idellus), silver carp ( Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), bighead carp ( Aristichthys nobilis), common carp ( Cyprinus carpio), crucian ( Carassius auratus), and bream ( Parabramis pekinensis)) were scanned by near infrared reflectance spectroscopy from 1000 nm to 1799 nm. Linear discriminant analysis models were built for the classification of species. We inspected the effect of partial least square, principal component analysis, competitive adaptive reweighted sampling, and fast Fourier transform on linear discriminant analysis. The results showed that the dimension reduction methods worked very well for this example. Linear discriminant analysis models which were combined with principal component analysis and fast Fourier transform could classify accurately all the samples under multiplicative scatter correction pre-processing. According to the loadings in principal component analysis, spectra wavelengths 1000, 1001, 1154, 1208, 1284, 1288, 1497, 1665, and 1770 nm were selected as effective wavelengths in linear discriminant analysis. The discriminant analysis was simplified by using effective wavelengths as independent variables in a linear discriminant analysis model. This study indicated that linear discriminant analysis combined with near infrared reflectance spectroscopy could be an effective strategy for the classification of freshwater fish species.

Kurzfassung: Carotid intima–media thickness (cIMT) is considered a risk factor for and predictor of cerebrovascular disease. In this study, we explored the contribution of cIMT to cognitive impairment (CI) in dialysis patients and the role of cerebral small vascular disease (CSVD) and brain atrophy in this process. Methods: Cognitive function was assessed using a comprehensive cognitive test battery. CSVD and brain volume were assessed by magnetic resonance imaging, and cIMT was measured by ultrasonography. Multivariable analysis and mediation were used to explore the relevant relationships among cIMT, CI, CSVD and brain volume. Results: Seventy-three dialysis patients were enrolled. Approximately 54.8% were diagnosed with increased cIMT. The increased cIMT group was older and had lower serum albumin and creatinine levels than the normal cIMT group. There was no difference in the CSVD prevalence between the different cIMT groups. Patients in the normal, unilaterally and bilaterally increased cIMT subgroups demonstrated a gradual decrease in brain-matter volume and degenerate cognitive function. cIMT was related to cognitive function and gray-/white-matter volume. Increased cIMT was associated with a significantly increased risk of a reduced Mini Mental State Examination/Montreal Cognitive Assessment score and Trail A/B time delay. Mediation analysis showed that CI was mediated by brain-matter volume but not by CSVD. Conclusion: Increased cIMT was an independent risk factor for impairment of global cognitive function, memory, and executive function. The impact of cIMT on cognition was not induced by CSVD but by brain atrophy. cIMT may be a useful tool for screening patients at high risk of CI in the dialysis population.

Kurzfassung: Improvement in the tribological properties of the polyamide 6 (PA6) with various fillers, for example, talc, glass fiber (GF), combined solid lubricants such as graphite, and ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene was systematically studied. The results revealed that GF could reduce the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate of pure PA6 more efficiently than talc, and the optimum content was 15 wt%. The COF and wear rate increased with the increase of load, except the wear rate of the composite with 20 and 25 wt% GF, which decreased with the increase of load. The incorporation of combined solid lubricants to PA6 contributed to increases in COF and wear rate. Further addition of 15 wt% GF enhanced the tribological properties remarkably. To further understand the wear mechanism, the worn surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscopy.
