    Abstract: Background: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the most important complication of diabetes and the most common cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Aims: A recent study established that the Ramulus mori polysaccharides (RMP) exert antioxidant effects on DN in rats. Methods: The diabetic rats which induced by high-fat diet and streptozotocin injection were orally administered RMP by doses of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg daily for 8 weeks. The effects of RMP on hyperglycemia and other biochemical changes were examined in the sera and kidney tissues. Additionally, the pathological and ultrastructural changes and expressions of nuclear-factor kappa B (NF-κB) and transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1) were assessed. Results: The results revealed that the serum levels of blood glucose, total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG) were significantly decreased by RMP. Furthermore, the blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine (SCr) and 24-hour urine protein levels in the RMP-medicated rats were lower than those in untreated diabetic rats. Moreover, treatment of the DN rats with RMP normalized all biochemical changes, including the malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels in the serum and kidney tissues. In contrast, the protein expression levels of NF-κB and TGF-ß1, which were enhanced in the kidneys of DN rats, were reduced by RMP. Conclusion: These results suggest that RMP improving the renal function of diabeitc rats possibly via its ameliorating antioxidant activities.

    Abstract: 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Background: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 Breast carcinoma (BC) and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) occur predominantly in women. Many studies have shown that PTC is common among women with BC. Collision metastases in lymph nodes do occur but are not common. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Case Report: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 Here we report 3 metachronous cases of BC with PTC. PTC developed after BC in each case. Histology and immunohistochemistry revealed that HER2 status was positive in each BC, and in 1, concurrent metastases of BC and PTC were shown in a lymph node of the left cervical region. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Conclusion: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 From our results, we speculate that women with HER2-positive breast cancer may be at a higher risk for thyroid cancer than other cancers. Finding 2 distinct types of cancer metastasized to 1 lymph node in a patient may, therefore, warrant a high index of suspicion and the use of immunohistochemical stains to differentiate the types of collision tumors.

    Abstract: 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Introduction: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 Our previous work indicated that the activation of the Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 signaling pathway contributed to noise-induced cochlear inflammation. Previous studies have reported that low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid (LMW-HA) accumulates during aseptic trauma and promotes inflammation by activating the TLR4 signaling pathway. We hypothesized that LMW-HA or enzymes synthesizing or degrading HA might be involved in noise-induced cochlear inflammation. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Methods: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 The present study included two arms. The first arm was the noise exposure study, in which TLR4, proinflammatory cytokines, HA, hyaluronic acid synthases (HASs), and hyaluronidases (HYALs) in the cochlea as well as auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds were measured before and after noise exposure. The second arm was analysis of HA delivery-induced reactions, in which control solution, high-molecular-weight HA (HMW-HA), or LMW-HA was delivered into the cochlea by cochleostomy or intratympanic injection. Then, the ABR threshold and cochlear inflammation were measured. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Results: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 After noise exposure, the expression of TLR4, proinflammatory cytokines, HAS1, and HAS3 in the cochlea significantly increased over the 3rd to 7th day post-noise exposure (PE3, PE7). The expression of HYAL2 and HYAL3 dramatically decreased immediately after noise exposure, gradually increased thereafter to levels significantly greater than the preexposure level on PE3, and then rapidly returned to the preexposure level on PE7. The expression of HA, HAS2, and HYAL1 in the cochlea remained unchanged after exposure. After cochleostomy or intratympanic injection, both the hearing threshold shifts and the expression of TLR4, TNF-α, and IL-1β in the cochleae of the LMW-HA group were obviously greater than those of the control group and HMW-HA group. The expression of proinflammatory cytokines in the LMW-HA and control groups on the 7th day (D7) after cochleostomy tended to increase compared to that on the 3rd day (D3), whereas levels in the HMW-HA group tended to decrease on D7 compared to D3. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Conclusion: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 HAS1, HAS3, HYAL2, and HYAL3 in the cochlea are involved in acoustic trauma-induced cochlear inflammation through the potential proinflammatory function of LMW-HA.
