Kurzfassung: Antheroporum harmandii Gagnep. is a native plant species of Vietnam, belonging to a small genus of the Fabaceae family. In this study, the bioactivities of different extracts from twigs and seeds of A. harmandii plants collected from Dakrong, Quang Tri province were evaluated. Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of plant extracts had been done using an agar well diffusion method and DPPH assay. The results showed that methanol, dichloromethane and ethyl acetate extracts from twigs and methanol extract from seeds exerted activities to significantly inhibit two out of nine tested microorganisms. Particularly, the dichloromethane extract from the twigs sample exhibited the highest activity to Micrococcus luteus and Staphylococcus aureus strains with inhibition zones of 4.7 ± 0.3 mm and 2.3 ± 0.2 mm, respectively, at concentrations of 50 mg/mL. The lowest MIC values (500 µg/mL) and 50% inhibition concentration values (IC50) against M. luteus and S. aureus were recorded for the methanol and dichloromethane extracts of twigs. Among tested extracts, the ethyl acetate extract of twigs was the strongest antioxidant, showing radical scavenging potential with IC50 of 117.24 μg/mL. Therefore, A. harmandii species can be suggested as a new source for the isolation of valuable natural compounds.

Kurzfassung: Five known compounds {carbonylbis[imino(6-methyl-3,1-phenylenel)]}bis[carbamic acid] dimethyl ester (1), (1'R,3'S,5'R,8'S,2E,4E-dihydrophaseic acid) 3'-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (2), 3-methylbutan-1-ol beta-D-glucopyranoside (3), astragalin (4) and daucosterol (5) were isolated from the methanol extract of the seeds of Scaphium macropodum (Miq.) Beumée. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by the spectroscopic methods including NMR and MS, and also by comparison with the literature data. Compounds 1-3 were isolated from this plant for the first time.

Kurzfassung: Knema (Myristicaceae family) is a large genus, comprising over 100 species found in of South East Asian countries, among that over 10 species was found in Vietnam. Knema pachycarpa is a native tree distributed in central provinces of Viet Nam. Until now, only few chemical studies of Knema species in Viet Nam have been reported. Phytochemical study of Knema pachycarpa leaves led to the isolation of seven known compounds including six flavonoids 5,7,3′-trihydroxy-5′-methoxy isoflavone (1), luteolin (2), (-)-narigenin (3), (+)-catechin (4), isoquercetrin (5), and nicotiflorin (6), and a biphenyl compound  3,3',4,4'-tetrahydroxybiphenyl (7). Their structures were elucidated by MS and NMR data analysis and compared with those previously reported. Compounds 3 and 6-7 were found from Knema genus for the first time. In the cytotoxic assay, biphenyl compound (7) exhibited strong cytotoxicity to KB cancer cell line with IC50 value of 2.38 ± 0.11 mg/mL. Compound 7 also displayed showed activity against HepG2, Lu and MCF7 cancer cell lines with IC50 ranges from 18.25 ± 0.92 mg/mL to 35.56 ± 1.17 mg/mL, whereas flavonoids 1-6 were weakly active or inactive against tested cell lines.

Kurzfassung: In this research, we focus on development of a new configuration of magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) based clutch (MRC) featuring a tooth-shaped disc with multiple teeth acting as multiple magnetic poles of the clutch. The tooth-shaped disc is placed in a clutch housing composed of the left housing and the right housing. The inner face the housing also has tooth shaped features mating with the teeth of the disc through the working MRF. Excitation coils are placed directly on stationary winding cores placed on both side of the clutch housing. An air gap of 0.3 mm is left between the housing and the winding cores to ensure the housing can freely rotate against the winding cores. After the introductory part, configuration of the MRC is introduced and the transmitted torque of the MRC is derived. An optimization process to minimize the overall volume of the proposed clutch, which can generate a required maximum braking torque, is then conducted. The optimal results show that the overall volume of the proposed MRC is significantly reduced compared to a referenced conventional MRC (0.159 m3 vs. 0.295 m3). A prototype of the proposed MRC is fabricated for experimental works and good agreement between the experimental results and simulated ones is archived.

Kurzfassung: Sign languages are independent languages of deaf communities. The translation from normal languages (i.e., Vietnamese Language - VL) as long as other sign languages to Vietnamese sign language (VSL) is a meaningful task that breaks down communication barriers and improves the quality of life for the deaf community. In this paper, we experimented with and proposed several methods for building and improving models for the VL to VSL translation task. We presented a data augmentation method to improve the performance of our neural machine translation models. Using an initial dataset of 10k bilingual sentence pairs, we were able to obtain a new dataset of 60k sentence pairs with a perplexity score no more than 1.5 times that of the original dataset. Experiments on the original dataset showed that rule-based models achieved the highest BLEU score of 68.02 among the translation models. However, with the augmented dataset, the Transformer model achieved the best performance with a BLEU score of 89.23, which is significantly better than that of other conventional approach methods.

Kurzfassung: We report on a Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA)-based Titanium:Sapphire (Ti:Al2O3 or Ti:Sapphire) amplifier that uses a single grating stretcher and compressor configuration. The 8-pass amplifier configuration is able to yield 70 μJ pulse energy at 10 Hz repetition rate, which corresponds to a gain of 7000 times. The amplified pulses are expected to be transform-limited with pulse duration of 85 fs. This amplifier will expand the application of our Ti:Sapphire laser at the Vietnam Academy of Sciences (VAST).
