    Abstract: We investigate the effect of PbTiO3 on the LaAlO\(_3\)/SrTiO\(_3\) hetero-structure by density functional theory, where the asymmetrysandwich not only forms a quasi-two dimensional electron gas but also reveals a ferromagnetic state in the TiO\(_2\) interfaces. Itis found out that magnetic moments of TiO\(_2\) interface layers are around 0.18 \(\mu_B\) while they are mostly negligible in the pure LaAlO\(_3\)/SrTiO\(_3\) system. Even though magnetic moments are mainly produced by Ti t2g orbitals, oxygen plays a key role in the formation of the ferromagnetic state since polar distortions primarily occur in oxygen positions of the SrTiO\(_3\) and PbTiO\(_3\) sides in opposite directions.

    Abstract: Bouea macrophylla in the family Anacardiaceae is a prominent fruit in Southeast Asia, especially in Vietnam with several prospects. This study focused on the bioactive components and biological effects of B. macrophylla ethanol leaf extract. Phytochemical analysis revealed various compounds including polyphenol, tannin, saponin, reducing agent, flavonoid, and essential oil in the extract. The DPPH assay showed the remarkable antioxidant capacity of the extract (IC50 = 6.4 ± 0.08 μg/ml), which is stronger than ascorbic acid (IC50 = 9.35 ± 0.12 μg/ml). The disc diffusion method and minimal inhibitory concentration test displayed the significant antibacterial ability of the extract against Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium, and Bacillus cereus at the range from 10 - 15 mg/ml, but no activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Moreover, the MTT assay was performed the noticeable anticancer activity of the extract in HepG2 (IC50 = 72.33 ± 0.68 μg/ml), and MCF-7 cells (IC50 = 50.25 ± 1.36 μg/ml). Taken together, this study indicated the effects of B. macrophylla ethanol leaf extract from Vinh Long Province, Vietnam on antibacterial, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. Therefore, B. macrophylla possibly is used in the food industry and medicine.

    Abstract: The environmental quality of 6 famous sand beaches of the Ha Long - Cat Ba area was surveyed in July 2018 (the rainy season) and March 2019 (the dry season). The results showed that the pore water layer below the sand surface contained some pollutants exceeding the critical value of QCVN 10:2015/BTNMT for coastal water and ASEAN-criteria, including TSS, ammonium and nitrate. In the rainy season, the pore water quality was lower than that in the dry season, indicating that the tourism influenced the sandy beach water quality. Among the studied beaches, Ha Long and Bai Dai (Van Don) showed pore water pollution; the rest beaches were low to moderate pollution. Pore water in sandy beaches was charecterized by low dissolved oxygen saturation and high mineralization compared to sea water, thus confirming the role of sandy beaches in providing mineral nutrients to the sea. Analysis of the sediment grain size at the sandy beaches showed that the beach quality was medium to good. Forty-seven benthic fauna species were found on sandy beaches of the Ha Long - Cat Ba area, of which the dominant species were mollusks, followed by crustaceans, polychaetes, and echinoderms. The biodiversity of sandy beaches in study area was at an average level.

    Abstract: In this study, 19 surface bioclimatic variables of high spatial resolution 0.00226o (~ 250 m) are generated in a Geographic Information System by the combination of (1) the raster dataset of monthly temperature and precipitation obtained from the global WorldClim database at 0.00833o spatial resolution for the period of 1960–2000; and (2) the climate data (temperature and precipitation) of the Central Highlands and Southern Central Coast collected from the 31 temperature and 97 precipitation recording sites for the period of 1991–2015. The statistical downscaling method is applied, using multiple linear regression analysis, in which elevation, geographic coordinates, and distance from the coast are treated as independent variables, to estimate the distribution of temperature; and the B-Spline interpolation method combined with multiple linear regression analysis is employed on precipitation over the study area. The outcomes of the two main analyses are computed to create 19 high spatial resolution bioclimatic variables. While using only local climate data on analyzing the regression models results in high fluctuation of estimated temperature, the combination of the two datasets is more informative. The spatial distribution of our interpolated precipitation is similar to the WorldClim data but has a smaller difference in the mean annual precipitation. The results, which shows higher spatial resolution and are closer to the observed data than those from the WorldClim, could be better applied for predicting species distribution in the region.

    Abstract: Camellia chrysantha (the golden camellia, golden tea) is a species of evergreen shrub or small tree belonging to the family Theaceae. The flowers and the leaves of this plant are used as tea and drank for its health benefits. The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical constituents of the flowers of Camellia chrysantha. Five flavonoids were isolated from the flowers of Camellia chrysantha (Theaceae), including (+)-catechin (1), (-)-epicatechin (2), quercetin (3), quercetin-3-O-methyl ether (4) and kaempferol (5). Their chemical structures were elucidated by spectroscopic data analysis and by comparison with those reported in the literature. Among five compounds, compounds 4 was isolated for the first time from this species.

    Abstract: As an active member of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea - UNCLOS, Vietnam has completed 3 Reports on the Limits of the Continental Shelf and has submitted two of them to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf - CLCS, before the deadline 13-5-2009. Those are: (1) Outer Limits of the Vietnam’s Extended Continental Shelf: North Area (VNM-N); (2) Outer Limits of the Vietnam’s Extended Continental Shelf: Middle Area (VNM-M) and (3) Vietnam - Malaysia Joint Continental Shelf Submission. The VNM-M has not yet been submitted but it was mentioned to the CLCS and will be submitted in the appropriate time.Vietnam’s submissions were highly appreciated by CLCS; although the CLCS has not yet organized a special sub-committee to look at our reports, the secretariat of CLCS has already posted the executive reports of our submissions, with our principle claims on the continental shelf, on the website of the CLCS since May 2009. This paper presents shortly the UNCLOS and its application in Vietnam case.

    Abstract: Based on the analysis of relevant information on the socio-economic development characteristics of 11 provinces and cities in the Gulf of Tonkin, ten (10) conflicts of interest have been listed, analyzed, and evaluated. Conflicts of interest are classified into conflicts between sectors, development and conservation, localities, and countries. The conflicts of interest are related to disputes on marine space and resources and negatively impact the environment. Understanding the nature of conflicts of interest in the region to have reasonable solutions, especially for antagonistic conflicts, is very important in the sustainable development of the Gulf of Tonkin.
