    Abstract: Wasp venoms are complex mixtures of various types of compounds, of which proteins and peptides are major components. Beside its toxicity, wasp venom is potential for treatment of diseases. Characterization of venom proteins and peptides is the first and most important step toward its applications in medicine. Vietnam possesses many valuable materials, of which venoms could be used in medicine. In the present work, we aim to identify proteins and peptides in the venom of Vespa velutina (V. velutina), a species of social wasp indigenous to Southeast Asia including Vietnam using proteomic techniques. The venom isolated from V. velutina by manual extraction was digested with trypsin via the FASP (Filter Aided Sample Preparation) method and analyzed with liquid chromatography tandem - mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The following protein identification, protein validation, and peptide de novo sequencing were carried out using the Peaks software. In total, we detected 36 proteins from V. velutina venom and many of them had been reported as venom-specific proteins. According to Gene Ontology Annotation (GOA), V. velutina venom proteins were functionally classified into five categories: binding proteins (53%), catalytic proteins (33%), structural proteins (8%), antioxidants (4%), and proteins with other functions (2%). In addition, 81 peptides were detected in the venom of V. velutina by de novo sequencing, of which 34 peptides (42%) are potential venom peptides. We introduced for the first time the collection of proteins and peptides from V. velutina venom, providing the basis for its further application in medicine.

    Abstract: This paper presents some results of rainfall forecast in the monsoon onset period in South Vietnam, with the use of ensemble Kalman filter to assimilate observation data into the initial field of the model. The study of rainfall forecasts are experimented at the time of Southern monsoon outbreaks for 3 years (2005, 2008 and 2009), corresponding to 18 cases. In each case, there are five trials, including satellite wind data assimilation, upper-air sounding data assimilation, mixed data (satellite wind+upper-air sounding data) assimilation and two controlled trials (one single predictive test and one multi-physical ensemble prediction), which is equivalent to 85 forecasts for one trial. Based on the statistical evaluation of 36 samples (18 meteorological stations and 18 trials), the results show that Kalman filter assimilates satellite wind data to forecast well rainfall at 48 hours and 72 hours ranges. With 24 hour forecasting period, upper-air sounding data assimilation and mixed data assimilation experiments predicted better rainfall than non-assimilation tests. The results of the assessment based on the phase prediction indicators also show that the ensemble Kalman filter assimilating satellite wind data and mixed data sets improve the rain forecasting capability of the model at 48 hours and 72 hour ranges, while the upper-air sounding data assimilation test produces satisfactory results at the 72 hour forecast range, and the multi-physical ensemble test predicted good rainfall at 24 hour and 48 hour forecasts. The results of this research initially lead to a new research approach, Kalman Filter Application that assimilates the existing observation data into input data of the model that can improve the quality of rainfall forecast in Southern Vietnam and overall country in general.References Bui Minh Tuan, Nguyen Minh Truong, 2013.     Abstract: A. annamensis and A. roxburghii belong to Orchidaceae family that has medicinal and ornamental plant value. They are in extinct endangered plants in wild due to the over- collected and loss of the suitable habitats. Using the LED lighting source for culture these species in in vitro condition to optimize the culture conditions, reduction of the production cost, especially electric bill for air-corditionning, lighting. In recent years, the trial applied LED which has the feature of energy saving, small size and a longer operating life, for plant production has started. In this study, LED illumination sources are in four different wavelengths of λ= 430- 470 nm; λ= 470-510 nm; λ= 510-560 nm; λ= 560-600 nm and white fluorescent lamp as control with light intensity photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 40 µmol/m2/s photon used to study their effects on the growth and development of A. annamensis and A. roxburghii species. After 8 weeks of implementing, the results showed that the LEDs of λ= 470-510 nm were suitable for the growth and development for A. roxburghii shoots while for A. annamensis, λ = 430- 470 nm were most suitable for budding and λ= 470-510 nm for shoot growth.     Abstract: Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) is one of the foremost causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide as well as Vietnam. ACS was evoked by rupture or erosion of atherosclerotic plaques that was divided into Non–ST-segment elevation Acute Coronary Syndrome (NSTEACS) and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction groups (STEMI). The matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) is an enzyme family with fucntioning in the degradation of extracellular matrix and disruption of basement membranes. Of the MMPs, MMP-9 is expressed in the atherosclerotic plaques and plays a key role in the rupture of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques. In this work, we measured the serum MMP-9 level in 205 patients with acute coronary syndrome (including 103 of NSTE-ACS and 102 of STEMI patients) and 101 healthy participants by sandwich Elisa method. The results showed that the MMP-9 level was significantly higher in NSTE-ACS and STEMI compared to the control group (208.59 ± 100.47 ng/mL, 189.98 ± 112.81 ng/mL vs 168.50 ± 79.52 ng/mL, respectively, P=0.014). However, a logistic regression analysis indicated that the MMP-9 level was only significantly higher in patients with NSTE ACS (OR= 1.0048, CI 95%= 1.000-1.009; P= 0.018). The serum MMP-9 level is correlated with traditional risk factors such as glucose, Cholesterol and Triglyceride by multiple logistic regression analysis. Conclusion: Our study suggests that the serum MMP-9 level is significantly associated with the NSTEACS and is a potential marker for dianogsis of ACS in the Vietnamese patients

    Abstract: This report presents the result of four surveys in 2013 at 12 sampling stations on fish composition of fish fauna in the Thu Bon estuary of Quang Nam province (the central Vietnam) and a total of 139 species of fishes were identified belonging to 110 genera, 63 families and 17 orders. Analysis of community structure of fish fauna showed that the order Perciformes was the most popular, making up 56.1%; Cypriniformes (8.6%); Pleuronectiformes (6.5%); Clupeiformes and Siluriformes (4.3%); Anguilliformes, Tetraodontiformes (3.6%); Mugiliformes (2.9%); ... The family Gobiidae was the most abundant with 12 species, making up 8.6% of the total number of species; Cyprinidae (10 species, 7.2%); Leiognathidae, Carangidae had the same number of species (6 species, 4.3%); Clupeidae, Lutjanidae: 5 species (3.6%); Serranidae, Mugilidae, Soleidae, Gerreidae, Ambassidae, Tetraodontidae: 4 species (2.9%); In addition, 4 families had 3 species, 12 families had 2 species and 35 families had 1 species. Cluster analysis based on the Bray - Curtis similarity index of nine fish faunas (Bach Dang, Thai Binh, Bu Lu, Son Tra peninsula, Thu Bon, coastal wetlands of Quang Nam, Nha Phu - Binh Cang, Ben Tre and Tra Vinh) showed that fish composition of the coastal - estuaries of Tra Vinh and Ben Tre had the highest similarity (78%), subsequently fish faunas of Thu Bon had similarity with that of Quang Nam (47%), Quang Nam and Nha Phu - Binh Cang (41%), Bu Lu and Thu Bon (38%). The result was also classified into three distinct groups of 9 fish faunas: group 1- Tra Vinh, Ben Tre and Thai Binh; group 2- Quang Nam, Thu Bon, Nha Phu - Binh Cang, Son Tra and Bu Lu; group 3- Bach Đang. The species richness (Margalef’s index) of Thu Bon (28.0) was less abundant than that of other areas: the highest species richness belonging to Tra Vinh (39.4), Thai Binh (38.6), Nha Phu - Binh Cang (35.9), Son Tra (31.8), Bu Lu (29.7), … The diversity of species composition according to the taxa in each region showed the characteristic of each fish fauna. The fish fauna is evidently typical of characteristics of the estuarine waters and coastal lagoons. There are 4 threatened species which are listed in the Vietnam’s Red Data Book (2007) at ex-tremely vulnerable levels.

    Abstract: Glipizide is a second generation of sulfonylurea with promising hypoglycemic activity. It acts by stimulating the release of insulin from β-cells of pancreas. Glipizide is absorbed rapidly, uniformly with good mean oral bioavailability. It offers several advantages such as swift and short action, high potency and also does not accumulate in plasma on repeated oral administration. In this paper we report the acute and subacute toxicity of glipizide on BALB/c albino mice. The results showed the safety of our synthesized products.
