Kurzfassung: Triterpenoids are considered to be the major pharmaceutical active compounds found in the macrofungus Ganoderma lucidum (G. lucidum). Extraction conditions of triterpenoids from the Vietnamese red G. lucidum were optimized by response surface methodology using ultrasound –assisted extraction (UAE) method. A Box – Behnken experimental design was used to determine the simultaneous influences of three independent variables, namely solvent-to-material ratio, extraction time, and ultrasonic power on the yield of triterpenoids. The highest yield of triterpenoids obtained under optimum conditions including extraction time of 55 min, ultrasonic power of 480 W, solvent-to-material ratio of 27:1 mL/g was 9.5768 ± 0.228 mg/g according to ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) analysis. Besides, the hot water extraction method was carried out in order to compare with UAE in terms of the yield of triterpenoids. The results of anticancer evaluation of the extract obtained indicated that with the half-maximal inhibitory concentration value of 67.25 ± 0.82 µg/mL on the human Hep-G2 liver cancer cell lines, triterpenoids extracted from G. lucidum could be regarded as a potential agent for medicinal treatment.

Kurzfassung: Elsholtzia ciliata (Thunb.) Hyland is commonly known as Vietnamese balm - a spicy, lemon-scented culinary herb in Asian cuisine, especially in Vietnam. The biological activities of E. ciliata essential oils (Ec EOs) in Vietnam have yet to be thoroughly studied and have received less attention than other species of genus Elsholtzia in the world. In this study, we evaluated the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer of Ec EOs and examined their chemical compositions. Fresh leaves of E. ciliata were hydro-distilled to yield essential oil of 0.82% dry weight, respectively. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses revealed that Ec EOs principally possessed complex mixtures of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. (Z)-β-Farnesene (22.72%), neral (15.66%), geranial (15.62%), and β-ocimene (13.30%) were the major components of Ec EOs. In the antioxidant assay, the radical scavenging capacities of Ec EOs against DPPH were 26.55 g/L (IC50). In the antimicrobial assay, the evaluation of antimicrobial activity using the agar wells diffusion method showed that Ec EOs in all concentrations was active against the Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus), Gram-negative bacteria (Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae). In the anticancer assay, EcE Os can be toxic to Hep G2 cells with IC50 reaching 0.00204%.

Kurzfassung: The Garcinia genus belonging to the Clusiaceae family (Guttiferae) has been reported to be a rich source of polyisoprenylated benzophenones, xanthones and biflavonoids with various biological activities. Garcinia fagraeoides A.Chev is an evergreen hardwood tree found only in the north provinces of Viet Nam and Guangxi province of China. Its stem bark and leaves have been used in Vietnamese traditional medicine for treatment of malaria and dermatitis diseases. In our continuing studies on chemical constituents and biological activities from the genus Garcinia, the phytochemical of Garcinia fagraeoides’s stem bark collected from Thua Thien Hue province was investigated. Repeated chromatography steps over silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 of the dichloromethane partition from the methanol extract of  Garcinia fagraeoides’s stem bark led to the isolation of five compounds including one polyisoprenylated benzophenone (isogarcinol (1)), two tetraoxygenated xanthones (rubraxanthone (2), a-mangostin (3)), ferulic acid (4), and pyromeconic acid (5). Their structures were elucidated mainly by analysis of their 1D, 2D NMR spectroscopy and ESI-MS data, and by comparison with reported data. The absolute configuration of isogarcinol (1) was determined by comparison of its experimental optical rotation and NMR data with the values of its stereoisomer. This is the first reported isolation of compounds 1-5 from the stem bark of Garcinia fagraeoides.

Kurzfassung: Ethnopharmacological relevance: The genus Mallotus (Euphorbiaceae family) includes 124 accepted names and distributes in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Some Mallotus species are used in traditional medicines for the treatment of chronic hepatitis, enteritis stomach, disorders, cholelithiasis, anti-cancer,  gastric, and duodenal ulcers. Aim of the study: According to the Scifinder database, this is the first review study that focuses on the phytochemistry and pharmacology of Mallotus genus (17 Mallotus species) to understand the link between the traditional medicinal uses, phytochemistry, and bioactivities. Thus, they provides a scientific fundamental for further research in the phytochemical and pharmacological activities of their species. Materials and methods: Information about the Mallotus genus was collected using various databases, such as Web of Science, SciFinder, PubMed, Sci-hub, Google Scholar, Wiley, Elsevier, ACS publications, and SpringerLink between 1978 and 2021. Plant names were validated by “The Plant List” (www.theplantlist.org).  Results: Up to now, total 325 compounds were reported from Mallotus species, including phloroglucinols, steroids, coumarins, benzopyrans, flavonoids, chalcones, galics, and bergenins. The extracts and phytochemical constituents of the Mallotus genus are a rich source of biologically active, including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, immunoregulatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-virus, and other activities. Conclusions: The review indicated that the Mallotus genus is a promising source of biological activities compounds, special anti-cancer chromanes. The results of this review confirm the great potential of Mallotus species. Thus, it will be helpful for further research in the phytochemistry and pharmacology of the Mallotus genus.
