Abstract: To assess the impact of antibiotic use in aquaculture in Nha Trang bay, we conducted this study with the aim of assessing antibiotic resistance of opportunistic pathogenic bacteria isolated from water and sediment around shrimp/fish cages in the Nha Trang bay. 109 strains of Vibrio, Salmonella-Shigella and Aeromonas groups were isolated in the surrounding environment of farming areas in Dam Bay and Hon Mieu. Antimicrobial resistance test of these 109 strains showed that in the water environment in Dam Bay, TET (96.6%) and NIT (92.5%) were the two antibiotics with the highest rates of resistant bacteria while no bacteria were resistant to RIF. All 5 types of antibiotics had a statistically insignificant percentage of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in water samples at Hon Mieu, ranging from 33.3% to 68.9%. Also in the water environment, the rate of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in Dam Bay was not influenced by the distance to the cages (42.5–66.6%). Meanwhile, in Hon Mieu, the highest rate of resistant bacteria was observed at the distance of 200 m (100%) away from cages and the lowest rate at the distance of 100 m (20%). In the sediment environment around the cages, both the Dam Bay and Hon Mieu farming areas showed the highest rates of antibiotic-resistant bacteria against TET, NIF and RIF had the lowest rate of resistant bacteria. Among the total of 109 strains tested for antibiotic resistance, 2 strains labeled TCBS_HM200 m and SS_HM200 m were found to be resistant to all 5 tested antibiotics. These two strains were respectively identified as Vibrio harveyi and Oceanimonas sp.

Abstract: The bacterial communities performing endophytic lifestyle have been proven to possess a number of characteristics useful to host plants and thus are considered as “plant probiotics”. Many probiotic bacteria were reported for antagonism against different plant pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and nematodes. The use of endophytic bacteria as biocontrol agents would have great potentials, allowing reducing the use of agrochemicals and thus support a sustainable agriculture.         In this study, endophytic bacteria isolated from rice plants of IR4625 cultivar from Long An province, Vietnam were used for screening strains that have antagonistic activity against Dickeya zeae (Dz), the bacterium causing foot rot disease. The rice plants had foot rot disease symptoms, i.e. dark-brown foot with odor smell typical for bacterial infection. Strain VY81 was isolated from a surface sterilized rice stem sample adjacent to the foot rot area. The crude extract of strain VY81 showed significant antagonistic activity against Dz, with the inhibition zone of 14,25 mm ± 1,06 in diameter. Strain VY81 produced the compound antagonizing Dz at maximal level after 48 h cultivated in TSB medium. The activity was found mainly in the culture broth, just a small part was found intracellularly. The bioactive compound antagonizing D. zeae produced by strain VY81 was purified by HPLC and analyzed by mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. The compound was identified as a quinoline alkaloid, the chemical formula is C17H21ON with chemical name 2-(2-heptenyl)-3-methyl-4(1H)-quinolone. Comparative analyses of the 16S rDNA gene sequence revealed that strain VY81 belonged to the genus Burkholderia, most closely related to Burkholderia cepacia (99,77% sequence homology). The 16S rDNA sequence of strain VY81 was deposited at GenBank under accession number MW056196. Strain VY81 and its quinolone compound would have application potential for development of biocontrol product against the foot rot disease caused by Dickeya zeae.

Abstract: El Niño and the prolonged warm sea surface temperature significantly impacted coral reefs and caused coral bleaching in some parts of the world. This study evaluated the density of symbiotic algae and bacteria associated with the three coral species, namely Acropora hyacinthus, Acropora muricata, and Acropora robusta, collected in Hang Rai, Ninh Thuan in May, June, August 2016, and June 2017. The number of zooxanthellae with each coral species was statistically significant and correlated with several environmental factors, suggesting that symbiotic algae could play a key role in coral health. The number of associated microbial with the three coral species was significantly different; they tended to depend on sampling time rather than coral species-specific. At the time of ENSO (2016), the difference in the total associated bacteria with all three coral species was statistically significant. While the total number of related bacteria with all three species of coral collected in 2017 did not differ from the total of bacteria in ambient water. In conclusion, symbiotic algae tend to be species-specific, whereas bacteria fluctuate significantly over sampling time. Studying the molecular issues of microalgae, the presence, the role of some groups of bacteria involved in the N, C, P, and S cycles, and the influence of environmental parameters should also be encouraged to understand the relationship of coral holobiont better.

Abstract: Coral associated bacteria and their host are currently one of the interested issues for research and scientists worldwide. The densities of zooxanthellae and bacteria associated with three most prevalent species Acropora hyacinthus, Acropora muricata and Acropora robusta in Hang Rai, Ninh Thuan was evaluated over time by staining with SYBR Gold and direct counting with epifluorescence method. The most dominant bacteria were isolated by culture dependent method. The densities of zooxanthellae and bacteria ranged from 0.39–1.83×107 cell/g, and 0.83–2.52×108 cell/g, respectively. Bacterial density in the 3 months was significantly different compared to the density of the bacteria in ambient water. Total heterotrophic bacteria, comma shaped bacteria and bacillus form showed negatively correlated with pH, PO4, while zooxanthellae showed no correlation with all factors.

Abstract: Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is an autosomal recessive inherited metabolic disorder caused by malfunction of the branched-chain α-ketoacid dehydrogenase complex (BCKDH). This enzyme complex participates in the catalyzing metabolisms of the branched-chain α-ketoacids, the second step of the degradation of branched-chain amino acids. Impaired activities of the BCKAD complex lead to an increase of the levels of branched- chain amino acid such as leucine, valine, and isoleucine in the blood. In children with maple syrup urine disease, catalysis of the metabolisms of some amino acids failed to be implemented, leading to an accumulation of the amino acids which has been shown as one of the causes of neurological complications, intellectual disabilities, and nervous paralysis or even death. Pathogenic mutations normally occur in BCKDHA, BCKDHB, DBT and DLD genes which encode the E1α, E1β, and E2 subunits of the BCKDH complex. In the present study, a homozygous mutation in the BCKDHB gene (c. 1016C 〉 T) in a pediatric patient with MSUD diagnosed at The National Hospital of Pediatrics was identified using whole exome and Sanger sequencing methods. As a result, the inheritance of the homozygous mutation related to MSUD in BCKDHB gene within the pedigree of the patient’s family was determined. The results indicated that the mutation in the BCKDHB gene was inherited from both of the patient’s parents. In addition, this finding provides an important scientific basis to  researches on MSUD in the Vietnamese population.

Abstract: The uptake rate of nitrate by leaves and roots was simultaneously investigated in the seagrass T. hemprichii collected from Lo river, Nha Trang. The principle of nutrient uptake of seagrass was based on the approaches of the Michaelis-Menten model. The laboratory experiments of nitrate uptake were done the ranges of ambient nitrate concentrations in the separate water column of leaves and roots. The calculated results indicated that the nitrate uptake rate through the leaves was higher than that of the roots. The maximum uptake rate (Vmax) through the leaves and the roots was 1,777.0 mgN/g DW/h and 131.6 mgN/g DW/h, respectively. From these results, the nitrate uptake rate by the seagrass in Lo river was estimated at 52.2 mgNm-2h-1. The value plays an important role in developing and implementing plans for the protection and rehabilitation of seagrass beds in coastal areas.

Abstract: Membrane distillation (MD) has emerged as a promising technology for seawater desalination to provide drinking water. The most considerable advantage of MD is the capacity to utilize thermal energy to reduce the energy cost of the solar-driven MD seawater desalination systems. However, limited thermal efficiency is one of the key challenges that prevent the wide application of MD for seawater desalination. Due to low thermal efficiency, most solar-driven MD systems require large and complex arrays of solar thermal collectors, leading to the significantly high investment costs of the MD systems. MD membranes coated with solar radiation absorbing materials have been proposed for the solar-driven MD process to obviate the need for large arrays of solar thermal collectors. In this study, we synthesized a novel black spinel-carbon nanocomposite for MD membrane coating to improve the solar radiation absorbance of the membrane, thus enhancing thermal efficiency of the MD system. The preliminary experimental results demonstrated that the black spinel-carbon nanocomposite could absorb light at a wider wavelength range from visible to far-red; therefore, they exhibited increased solar radiation absorbance and hence heating efficiency compared with single materials.

Abstract: In this paper, we present some new results of the Pre-Cenozoic basement structure on the Southeast continental shelf of Vietnam based on the combination of some modern methods to analyse and interpret gravity data. They are the 3D gravity inversion method, the directional analytic signal derivatives and the curvature gravity gradient tensor. The results obtained include the density distribution, the fault system and the main structural blocks inside of the Pre-Cenozoic basement on Southeast continental shelf of Vietnam. The initial results about density distribution show that it relatively clearly reflects the shape of basins in the area: The contours that have value σ =2.7 g/cm3 and value σ = 2.76 g/cm3 are near the edges of the Cuu Long basin and the Nam Con Son basin, respectively. The density value reaches the maximum at the center of basins. For the Cuu Long basin, the maximum value is σmax= 2.76 g/cm3 and the Nam Con Son has maximum value σmax= 3.0 g/cm3. Many faults that appear in the study area have the existence depth in the wide range from 6 km to 30 km, even above 30 km and the faults that have the existence depth from 8 to 10 km are in the majority. In particular, the boundary of anomalous sources existing in the Pre-Cenozoic basement is shown by the better resolution, at which more edge points are identified than the maximum horizontal gradient amplitude method that is widely used. The results also show that the combination of individual results complements each other and creats the sufficient and clearer picture inside of the Pre-Cenozoic basement.
