Abstract: The occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms (CYBs) associated with cyanotoxins has been reported worldwide. While planktonic cyanobacteria and the contamination of microcystin (MC) in the water column have been the subject of many investigations, little attention is paid to the benthic cyanobacterial communities and MC concentration in the benthic environment. This study aimed to investigate the benthic cyanobacterial composition and MC concentration accumulated in sediment from the Tri An Reservoir (TAR), Dong Nai province. Benthic cyanobacterial communities and sediment were collected at five sites in dry and rainy seasons. The benthic cyanobacterial communities were morphological observation and identification. Different nitrogen, phosphorus species, and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) in sediment were analyzed. MCs concentration in sediment was quantified by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Results indicated that the sediment from the TAR was contaminated with nitrogen. A total of 19 species belonging to 12 genera, 3 orders of cyanobacteria were identified. In which, Anabaena, Oscillatoria, and Microcystis were the three most commonly found in the samples. Surface sediment samples contained high densities of colonial Microcystis. The Chl-a concentration in sediment in dry and rainy seasons ranged from 1.96–3.45 and 0.71–3.15 µg/g fresh weight (FW), respectively. MC was detected in sediment at all sites in both dry and rainy seasons with a concentration up to 191.4±14.2 ng/g FW. The outcome of this study provides basic knowledge on MC and potential MC-producing cyanobacteria in a drinking water supply. Further investigation on the toxic producing ability of the benthic cyanobacteria species from the Tri An Reservoir is required.

Abstract: This study is aimed to examine whether the presence of non-toxic filamentous cyanobacteria can cause toxic effects on Daphnia magna. Six strains of Oscillatoria perornata were isolated from the Tri An Reservoir and cultured in our laboratory for investigation. The results revealed that all strains were negative with the mcyA moleculer marker. The high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) results showed that toxin was not detected in their culture products, indicating that these strains corresponded to non-toxin producing strains. However, the results of chronic assay indicated that these non-toxin producing O. perornata conferred toxic effects on the tested animals. The age at first reproduction of D. magna was delayed and the survival of D. manga decreased in proportional with the increase of the density of cells of O. perornata exposed. Significant differences in the life history responses were observed for D. mangna exposed to O. perornata. These results suggested that bioactive secondary metabolites other than microcystins produced by the filamentous cyanobacteria O. perornata may contribute to the toxic effects on Daphnia. Besides cyanotoxins, other secondary metabolites must be taken into account when investigating the toxic effects of cyanobacteria.

Abstract: This paper presents the application of anAutomatic Phase Balancing Device (APBD) to reduce current unbalance in low voltage distribution networks. The proposed algorithm allowsus to calculate the unbalanced level and to conduct the automatic phase balancing device during load variations. This device was then applied to a low voltage feeder of Cau Giay district (Viet Nam). Results show that the unbalanced current is always maintained lessthan 15 %.

Abstract: Polycrystalline CuInS\(_{2}\) (CIS) absorber films for solar cells were prepared by spray pyrolysis of aqueuos solution of copper chloride, indium chloride and thiourea onto heated glass substrates. By optimizing the spray parameters, such as reducing/increasing the temperature of the substrate and molar ratio of Cu/In in the spraying solution, the optical characteristics of films, which are well matched to the solar spectrum, were identified. In all cases, those CIS thin films were of p-type conductivity. Transmission measurements were performed to examine the optical properties of the films; the absorption coefficient and the optical band gap of the films were calculated by transmission spectra. The absorption spectra of the films showed that this compound is a direct band gap one and its gap varied between 1.30 - 1.78 eV. Those thin films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction in order to understand the effect of layers structure on their optical properties.

Abstract: Multi-correlation between bio-indices of nematode communities and ecological parameters in mangrove-shrimp farming ponds in Tam Giang commune, Nam Can District, Ca Mau Province, Vietnam were investigated. In which, diversities of nematode communities and several environmental variables in eight ponds were considered to process. Our findings underlined the high diversity of nematode communities in mangrove-shrimp farming ponds compared to other mangrove habitats. Nematode diversities provided more oppotunity in natural food for shrimp. Single correlation analyses showed that the species richness index correlated significantly to three variables (salinity, total organic carbon, and total nitrogen), the Margalef diversity index correlated to two variables (salinity, total organic carbon), and the expected number of species for 50 individuals index correlated with one variable (salinity). Results of multi-correlation analyses between the nematode bio-indices and the environmental variables were completely different from those of single-correlation analyses. In multi-correlation analyses, the species richness and the Margalef diversity index correlated to two variables (salinity, total organic carbon), Pielou’s evenness index and Hill indices correlated with dissolved oxygen, also the Hurlbert index correlated to total organic carbon. Hence, it is necessary to pay attention to the impact of complex interactions between the multi-environmental variables and nematode communities. This research aims to explain the differences between single- and multi-correlation for evaluation of the effects of environmental factors on nematodes as well as aquatic organisms.

Abstract: A pilot scale experiment was carried out in tertiary wastewater treatment using hydraulic automatic floating filter. The hydraulic automatic floating media filter has been working with 120 cm depth of polystyrene bed. Wastewater from secondary biological treatment of WWTP was treated  in the pilot filter with filtration velocity  of 4 m/h. Oxygen concentration was remained constantly at level 2.0 mg/l by using an ejector.  Headloss development and evaluation of SS, COD, NH4+ removals during filtration were objectives of the study. The experiment results showed that concentrations of SS, COD and NH4+ in effluent wastewater were kept lower than 5 mg/l, 30 and 0.5 mg/l respectively for almost filtration cycle. Effects of treatment in SS, COD and NH4+ were 88.27 %, 68.54 % and 5.59 %, respectively.

Abstract: In this report, we present some results of the magnetic phase transition nature and magnetocaloric effect of four polycrystalline ceramics of RE0.7Sr0.3MnO3 with RE = La, Pr, Nd and Sm, which were prepared by solid phase reaction method. X-ray diffraction data shows that all samples are single phase of RE0.7Sr0.3MnO3. The sample with RE = La belongs to the rhombohedral structure (space group: R3-c), whereas the other remaining samples belong to the orthorhombic one (space group: Pbnm). We pointed out that the difference in ionic radius at the RE site plays an important role in modifying the nature and Curie temperature (TC) of the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition of RE0.7Sr0.3MnO3 compounds. Namely, the RE = Nd sample has the characteristics of the first-order magnetic phase transition with TC = 242 K. Meanwhile, for RE = La, Pr, and Sm, the materials exhibit the characteristics of the second-order magnetic phase transition with TC = 360, 262, and 98 K, respectively. Among these, the magnetic phase transitions of two compounds with RE = Pr and Nd occur near room temperature with very large magnetocaloric effects. The values of the maximum magnetic entropy changes are higher than 3 J/kgK under magnetic field change of 10 kOe, suggesting their potential application in the field of civil magnetic refrigeration. The nature of the magnetic phase transition and the characteristic quantities related to the magnetocaloric effects of the RE0.7Sr0.3MnO3 compounds were studied and discussed in detail through the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the magnetization data.
