Abstract: Recently, a contagious lung disease named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), rapidly spread worldwide and has many serious consequences for human health. Human genetic polymorphisms may contribute to the variation of incidence, mortality as well as severity of COVID-19. To date, this factor in the Vietnamese population remains unknown. A cellular protease termed transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2) was found to play a vital role in the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into host cells. In this study, we investigated polymorphisms in the TMPRSS2 gene from 270 whole exome sequencing data of Vietnamese peoples. We also employed bioinformatics tools including SIFT, Polyphen-2, and PROVEAN to predict the possible function of missense variants. A total of 34 TMPRSS2 variants were identified, of which, 29 were in non-coding regions and 14 were in coding regions. Variants found in exons included seven synonymous and seven non-synonymous point mutations, one of which was novel mutation (c.A1336C/p.R446R). Mutation c.G589A/p.V197M (rs12329760) possesses the highest frequency and was predicted to have the ability to damage protein by SIFT and Polyphen-2. In addition, the damaging possibility was also found in c.T244G/p.Y82D and c.C896T/p.A299V variants. This study contributes to the understanding of Vietnamese genetic variation databases relating to susceptibility to COVID-19.

Abstract: In this article, by combining/following previous publications, we summarize the history of nearly 100 years of development of the Vietnam seismological network and its achievements in earthquake monitoring and seismological research to contribute to prevention and mitigation of natural disasters and sustainable development of the country. Earthquake observation in Vietnam has gone through many stages of development, the first seismic station was established in Sapa by the French in 1924. In the years of  70-80s of the 20th Century, the earthquake monitoring network of Vietnam consisted of 7 stations, including five stations distributed in the Northern part (Phu Lien, Sa Pa, Bac Giang, Hoa Binh, Tuyen Quang) and two stations located in the south (Nha Trang and Da Lat). In the period from 1990 to 2005, the national seismological network with 24 digital seismographs and short-period sensors was created and distributed throughout the country. Today, earthquake monitoring in Vietnam has made great progress, the new seismological network with 30 broadband stations with advanced earthquake monitoring technology been established completely in 2017. The international cooperation on earthquake monitoring and seismological research is  always promoted and expanded, over the past 60 years, IGP has collaborated with many scientific organizations from different countries such as Russia, France, China, Japan, Poland, The United State of America,... and prestigious international organizations as UNDP, PTWC, CTBTO, IRIS, ADPC, RIMES,.. Through these cooperations, many research projects have been done and Vietnamese seismologists have been trained and educated at different levels that help to improve their knowledge earthquake monitoring and seismological research. Besides operating the national seismological network, some local seismic networks have also been established by Institute of Geophysics for many years to monitor and study induced seismicity in some reservoirs of hydropower dams such as Son La, Hoa Binh, Tri An, Yaly, Song Tranh, Lai Chau, Huoi Quang, Ban Chat,...

Abstract: Long-nosed fruit bat is a common name of the genus Macroglossus which comprises two species: Dagger-toothed long-nosed fruit bat (M. minimus) and Greater long-nosed fruit bat (M. sobrinus). These two species were rarely recorded from Vietnam or neighboring countries. Within Vietnam, M. minimus has been recorded only from two localities in southern Vietnam while M. sobrinus was known from all northern, central and southern regions of the country. Morphological features of these species in Vietnam were poorly documented in previous publications. With results from a rapid examination of all specimens and recently captured individuals, we here confirm that M. sobrinus is distinctively larger than M. minimus in all external and craniodental measurements. Two species are also distinguishable by their nostril shapes and mandible symphyses. This paper provides new distributional records of both M. sobrinus and M. minimus from Vietnam with remarks on their ecology and habitats.

Abstract: Plants of the genus Polyscias (the family Araliaceae) are represented as perennial shrubs and are commonly cultivated in southeastern Asia and the Pacific regions. Pharmacological studies revealed that Polyscias crude extracts and their isolated compounds exhibited a variety of biological activity, such as antibacterial, antifungal, cytotoxic, immuno-stimulant, wound healing and anti-asthmatic activities. For the first time, phytochemical study on the methanol (MeOH) extract of the stem barks of Vietnamese species Polyscias serrata Balf. (locally named Dinh lang rang) resulted in the isolation and NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance)-determination of six compounds 1-6. They include one nucleobase uracil (1), two nucleosides uridine (2) and adenosine (3), one alkaloid indole-3-carboxylic acid (4), one mono-phenol glucoside koaburside (5), and one saponin randianin (6). The chemical structures of these phytochemicals were elucidated by physicochemical, the 1D-NMR [1H, 13C-NMR, and DEPT (Distortionless Enhancement by Polarization Transfer)], the 2D-NMR [HSQC (heteronuclear single quantum coherence), HMBC (Heteronuclear Multiple Bond Correlation), and COSY (correlation spectroscopy)] spectral, and ESI-MS (Electron Spray Ionization-Mass Spectrum) data. This is the first time that compounds 2-6 have been obtained from the genus Polyscias. In agreement with various reports, the nitrogenous compounds and triterpene saponins can be seen as characteristic metabolites of genus Polyscia
