Abstract: We perform a set of experiments on photo-heating in tissues containing gold nanoshells (NSs) and nanorods (NRs). The temperature of tissues were measured with different amounts gold NSs and NRs under illumination of a continuous diode laser at 808 nm and power density from 20 to 62 W/cm\(^{2}\). The temperature of the tissues injected gold nanoparticles increased to $66 \pm  4\(^{\circ}\)C for \(2.1 \times 10^{8}\) NSs and  \(73\pm  4\) \(^{\circ}\)C for gold \(5.4 \times 10^{9}\) NRs after 10 min exposition at power density 35 W/cm\(^{2}\). The control tissue without gold nanoparticles demonstrated a significantly lower temperature \(40 \pm  4\) \(^{\circ}\)C in the same time of illumination. The temperature can be reached up to around 100\(^{\circ}\)C for tissue with both NSs and NRs at 62 W/cm\(^{2}\) inrradiation for \(7-10\) min.

Abstract: Spherical gold nanoparticles doped dye solution was used for laser active medium. Fluorescence and absorption spectral shapes of laser dye molecules were modified by the resonance energy transfer between gold nanoparticles due to localized surface plasmon effect. Laser pulse width and tuning range of a distributed feedback dye laser can be controlled by using various gold nanoparticle concentrations. The gold nanoparticles can be considered as a quenching element inside laser cavity to remove relaxation oscillation pulses at high pumping rate above threshold.

Abstract: Gold nanoshells (GNSs) were grown on monodispersed aminoprotpyltriethoxysilane (APTES) functionalized of silica nanoparticles (NPs) cores with varying sizes ranging from 40-180 nm synthesized by Stober route. Gold shells were deposited onto the surface of silica NPs by tetrakis(hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride (THPC) and electroless gold plating method. The coverage of the gold nanoshells on the surfaces of the silica NPs was evaluated using UV-VIS/NIR spectrospcopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The plasmon resonance wavelengths of these gold nanoshells were tunable from visible to near infrared region. The GNSs were also bioconjugated with anti-HER2 monoclonal antibody for diagnostic breast cancer cells using dark field microscope technique. These GNS NPs play a role as nanoheaters transforming light to heat. With the present of these GNS NPs at volume density of $3.6\times 10^{10}$ NPs.cm$^3$ in chicken tissue samples, illuminated by 808 nm laser at the power density of 62~W.cm$^2$ the temperature of tissue sample reachs 110\rc{ }C after 20 minutes illumination.

Abstract: Dye-doped ORMOSIL (organically modified silicate) nanoparticles (NPs) have significant advantages over single-dye labeling in signal amplification, photostability and surface modification for various biological applications. The dyes: Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and Rhodamine B (RB) were successfully incorporated into ORMOSIL nanoparticles fabricated by micellar nanochemistry from Trimethoxysilane CH$_3$Si(OCH$_3$)$_3$ precursor. The optical characterization of dye-doped ORMOSIL NPs was studied in comparison with it’s of free dye in solution. The results shown that the photostability of ORMOSIL dye doped nanospheres is much improved in comparison with it’s of dye in solution. Other studies of the photophysical properties such as anisotropy, fluorescence lifetime and energy transfer were also done.

Abstract: This work presents the research results on photothermal effect caused by gold nanoshells Fe3O4/SiO2/Au and SiO2/Au in tissue under illumination of a diode laser continuous light at 808 nm. The results shown that the average temperature of samples injected with 1x108 SiO2/Au and Fe3O4/SiO2/Au nanoshells reach to 58° ± 5°C and 50° ± 5°C, respectively. This temperature can induce the irreversible damage to tissue. The photothermal transduction efficiency h of Fe3O4/SiO2/Au and SiO2/Au shells was determined as 16 % and 22 %, respectively. This study proves that gold nanoshells can be used to destroy the tumor cells by photothermal effect.

Abstract: A Configuration of a second-order distributed feedback dye laser pumped by a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser is setup. The tuning range is narrower than that in the case of the first-order DFDL but lower noise and more stable is obtained. Single picoseconds pulse tunable in range of 543 to 596 nm can be observed by using different laser dyes. The tuning range is extended to the shorter wavelengths, which is closed to pumping wavelength.

Abstract: In this study, 16 seasonal fly ash samples of municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) were collected in from waste-to energy power plant Cantho city to analysis the physical properties and heavy metals content. The results showed that the fly ash samples are very alkaline with porous and spherical shape, and the particle size of 1-100 µm. The analytical results disclosed that in these fly ash samples, the Zn, Pb, Al, Fe and Cr metals were found at high content range from 0.36-19.05 mg/kg while the toxic metals Ni and Hg are also found in fly ash, with the content from 0.141 to 0.51 mg/kg. Thus, fly ash is not hazardous waste and can be used for reuse in industries or land reclamation. The analysis results of SEM/EDX and XRF were quite similar with a difference of below 5%, indicating that both methods can be applied to research heavy metals. The findings in this study can guide the management, treatment and reuse of fly ash from MSWI incineration plants in Vietnam.

Abstract: In recent years, portable Raman spectrometers and commercialized surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates have become increasingly popular. They have turned out to be great tools for both substance detection, identification, and analysis on-site. This work addresses the technique to collect proper Raman spectra using SERS substrates and portable Raman spectrometers. We propose a random sampling technique that gives representative and high-quality spectra with high intensity and good resolution. This technique was tested on a home-built portable Raman spectrometer and SERS substrates based on metal film over nano-sphere (MFON) structure. Experimental results showed that peaks of Raman spectrum collected using random sampling technique are significantly narrower than those of spectra measured in conventional one and prevent samples and SERS substrates from photoinduced degradation. Potentially, this method can promote quantitative SERS and chemical trace analysis using portable Raman spectrometers.

Abstract: Fasciola hepatica, F. gigantica and “intermediate” forms of Fasciola species, are responsible for fascioliasis in ruminant animals and humans in many countries. There are two forms: “natural/admixed” and “introgressive” hybridization. Vietnam is a "hot spot" country, where the “hybrid” Fasciola forms have been found nationwide. Determination of phylogenetic relationships and genetic distance of these hybrid forms with those in family Fasciolidae and class Trematoda (Phyllum Platyhelminthes) is necessary to confirm their taxonomic classification. In this study, we sequenced the ITS1 and ITS2 for discrimination of two kinds of hybrid Fasciola mentioned above. The deduced amino acid sequences of the entire mitochondrial genes, cytochrome b (cob), nicotinamide dehydrogenase 1 (nad1) and cytochrome oxidase 1 (cox1), from two hybrid Fasciola spp. including Fsp-DL11-VN (from buffalo, admixed hybrid), Fsp-FH1-VN (from human, introgressive hybrid) and “pure” F. gigantica (Fgig-T4V-VN, from cattle) were obtained and combined (cob+nad1+cox1). These sequences were used as markers for phylogenetic analysis together with 28 representative isolates/species of Fasciolidae and Trematoda. Genetic distances between 13 isolates/species in the family Fasciolidae have also been determined to accurately account for their species-relationships. As results, pairwise genetic distance calculation showed that the distance rate was only 0.4% – 0.7% between Fasciola spp. hybrids of Vietnam and China, slightly higher, 1.3 – 2.0% with “pure” F. gigantica, whilist this rate was quite high compared with F. hepatica (5.7% – 5.9%), with Fasciolopsis buski (20.6% – 21.0%), and two other fasciolids, Fasciola jacksoni and Fascioloides magna (11.0% – 12.6%). The phylogenetic tree of 31 strains/species showed 5 distinct groups, corresponding to 5 families, ie., Fasciolidae, Echinostomatidae, Echinochasmidae, Heterophyidae, Opisthorchiidae and an outgroup, Schistosomatidae. Two "hybrid" Fasciola species of Vietnam (Fsp-FH1-VN and Fsp-DL11-VN) grouped with the reference "hybrid" Fsp-GHL-CN strain of China; and “pure” Fgig-T4V-VN with the two “pure” F. gigantica, Fgig-Bali-ID (Indonesia) and Fgig-GX-CN (China). These results confirmed that “hybrid” Fasciola spp. were of the maternally inherited mitochondrial lineage from F. gigantica.
