Abstract: Forward osmosis (FO) has received considerable interest for water and energy-related applications in recent years. However, FO has not been commercialized yet because of a few reasons. The lack of a high-performance FO membrane is one of the important barriers. To overcome this issue, a novel high-performance thin-film composite (TFC) membrane was successfully fabricated via interfacial polymerization with poly-L-lysine incorporated polysulfone substrate (PSf). Compared to the pristine PSf substrate, the incorporation of lysine (ranging 1 – 15 wt.%) meaningfully alternates the substrates chemical structure, porosity, contact angle, and morphology leading to an enhancement of the lysine -TFC membranes performance. The results showed that the new substrates with higher porosity, more hydrophilic, and smaller in pore size after the introduction of L-lysine. The membrane achieved the highest FO water flux at 15% concentration of lysine and the maximum FO water flux was 35 L/m2.h (LMH) with a comparable specific salt flux (Js/Jw) of 0.002 g/L in the active layer facing the feed side (AL-FS) when 1M NaCl was applied as draw solution. The water flux was increased with increasing concentration of lysine. The addition of poly-L-Lysine in casting solution resulted in a more porous and hydrophilic support layer.

Abstract: This study aims to characterize and investigate steel slag for the removal of its persistent organic pollutants (measured as COD) from pulp mill wastewater. Steel slag and its NaOH-modified states were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) pore size, and volume analysis. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the COD adsorption of slag-based adsorbents. The modification of NaOH was found to improve the COD adsorption capacity (by 1.5 times) of steel slag by generating hydroxyl and carboxyl groups and enlarging the specific surface area and pore size in the steel slag particles. In batch experiments, the suitable conditions for COD adsorption on NS (steel slag) and MS20 (2 M NaOH-modified steel slag) were determined to be pH 6 - 8, contact time 90 minutes, and adsorbent dosage 20 g/L. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models satisfactorily described the adsorption of COD on both NS and MS20 with a good correlation. According to the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum COD adsorption capacity of NS and MS20 were 5.16 and 6.87 mg/g, respectively. Column experiments demonstrated that NS and MS20 had promising potential for COD treatment in pulp mill effluent. According to the column results, 20 g of NS or MS20 was able to keep 300 mL or 525 mL of 125 mg/L COD wastewater, respectively, reaching the threshold of the National Technical Regulation on Industrial Wastewater QCVN 40:2021/BTNMT.

Abstract: Microplastics (MPs) are of emerging widespread concern, but amount of research done in freshwater environments and organisms is scarce compared to that in marine environments. Thus, the MPs identification in four freshwater fish at four districts of Bac Ninh  province were documented, including common carp (Cyprynus carpio), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), and red-tilapia (Oreochromis sp.). MPs were found in the gastrointestinal tracts (GIT) of 100% of examined fish. MPs abundances have significant differences between all freshwater fish collected from ponds and local markets (except for red-tilapia), while no difference by individual of each species neither in pond nor in local markets. The median sizes of microplastics ranged from 1410 µm to 2706 µm. The MPs were dominated by purple in color (in pond with average 38%; in local market with average 33%). µ-FTIR analysis showed that polymers found in fish GIT mainly were polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, polypropylene and nylon. These results showed that the microplastics was widely ingested by freshwater fish and help to aware people which fish are more contaminated with MPs to human consumption in Bac Ninh province.

Abstract: This case study focused on zero emission via waste sludge treatment process from a brewery wastewater treatment plant. A perspective solution was based on three main processes by sludge digestion (40 m3/day), biogas recovery and purification for generation (20 kWh) and organic fertilizer production for green agriculture. The system is designed to integrated processes and operated autocompletively, except for the fertilization of crops. This work results showed that organic content decreased 55 - 70% after 20 days of sludge retention time (SRT) with 55 - 65% methane (CH4) yield. The contaminants in biogas was purified by high gravity rotating packed bed (HGRPB) device using aqueous solution (NaOH 0.01 M) and removal efficiency of CH4 concentration is 87%, this CH4 content met a demand of the standard for generator engines or boiler combustion. The digested sludge was combined with other by-products to produce organic fertilizer for green agricultural development, the quality of organic fertilizer was examined and met the regulations of Decree No. 84/2019/ND-CP of the Government: Regulations on fertilizer management. The achievements of this case study respond the harmonious combination among waste treatment, energy recovery and organic fertilizer production to contribute to the direction of the circular economy aspect and sustainable development.

Abstract: In addition to traditional methods, advanced biotechnologies, especially CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing, have emerged as effective tools for improving important agronomic traits in rice. However, the critical step for utilizing these systems is to develope an effective system for rice transformation and regeneration. This study was performed to establish procedures for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and regeneration of rice cultivar Khang Dan 18 (KD18) – a popular indica variety in the North of Vietnam. The tissue cultures procedure with optimized medium compositions showed high frequencies of callus induction and shoot regeneration, at 94.7% and 45.3% respectively. We found that 30 mg/L of hygromycin was an effective concentration for transgenic KD18 selection. Light-yellow friable calli were used as the starting material for transformation mediated by A. tumefaciens strain AGL1 harbouring pHUE411 vector containing gus intron and hygromycin resistance gene (hptII). Important factors related to transformation procedure had been optimized in this study. The high transformation frequency (12.8%) was achieved by using the optimized procedure for KD18 cultivar. In which, bacterial density (OD600), infection time and co-cultivation period were performed at 0.1, 20 minutes and 3 days, respectively. PCR analysis using specific primers and the histological GUS staining demonstrated the presence of hptII and gus genes in transgenic rice lines. This result provides a potential protocol to transfer genes of interest into KD18 as well as other indica rice cultivars.

Abstract: The preliminary screening of microplastics (MPs) in sewage sludge from centralized industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Da Nang city of Viet Nam was investigated in this study. The MPs samples were collected in the sewage sludge from two WWTPs namely Hoa Cam (HC) and Hoa Khanh (HK). The obtained results indicated that the concentrations of MPs in the sewage sludge of HC and HK were 1,164 and 3,745 particles/kg dry weight, respectively. The MPs sizes varied from 1.6 to 5,000 μm, of which the size in the range of 1.6 - 100 μm was dominant at HC (42.5 %) and HK (51.8 %). The shape of MPs was mainly in the form of fragments and fibers. The MPs colour was also observed and the results showed that black, grey and yellow were the main colours of MPs. In addition, MPs chemical composition was determined and the results indicated that polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyethylene (PE) were dominant with 36.7 % and 25.2 % for HK and 23.5 % and 25.8 % for HC, respectively.

Abstract: The large sea urchins (Diadematidae) are widely distributed worldwide, from temperate to tropical waters. Diadematidae is an important herbivore in the coral reef ecosystem through herbivore-algal-coral interaction, which maintains the reef’s health. Many studies of Diadematidae have been performed around world, but in Vietnam, there is little known about the ecology of this group. Here, we first investigated the assemblage structure of Diadematidae in Northern Vietnam. We observed 43 sites of representative coral reefs in Ba Mun - Co To, Cat Ba - Ha Long, and Hon Me. Based on the surveys, we found four species of considerable size sea urchins, of which the most common species is Diadema setosum (79.8% of the total), Enchinothrix calamaris (10.1%), E. diadema (8.3%), and D. savignyi (1.8%). Among three study regions, Hon Me is the most diverse. In addition, Hon Me also has the highest density of sea urchins. However, this value is generally low compared to that in Southern Vietnam and other neighboring countries. Further study is needed to investigate the ecology and reproductive biology of Diadematidae to provide fundamental information for sustainable exploitation and conservation.

Abstract: In the present study, on-chip ZnO nanofibers were fabricated by means of the electrospinning technique followed by a calcination process at 600 oC towards the gas sensor application. The morphology, composition, and crystalline structure of the as-spun and annealed ZnO nanofibers were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The findings show that spider-net like ZnO nanofibers with a diameter of 60 – 100 nm were successfully synthesized without any incorporation of impurities into the nanofibers. The FESEM images also reveal that each nanofiber is composed of many nanograins. The combination of experimental and calculated X-ray diffraction data indicate that ZnO nanofibers were crystallized in hexagonal wurtzite structure. For the gas sensing device application, the ZnO nanofibers-based sensors were tested with the nitrogen dioxide gas in the temperature range of 200 oC to 350 oC and concentrations from 2.5 ppm to 10 ppm. The sensing property results indicate that at the optimal working temperature of 300 oC, the ZnO nanofibers-based sensors exhibited a maximum response of 30 and 166 times on exposure of 2.5 and 10 ppm NO2 gas, respectively. The presence of nanograins within nanofibers, which results in further intensification of the resistance modulation, is responsible for such high gas response.

Abstract: This study is to evaluate the precision of some new global Earth Gravitational Models in the East Vietnam Sea, selecting the best model. The method and the program for calculating Free air gravity anomaly from the global earth gravitational model have been researched and developed. Evaluation of the precision of the models is done by comparing the models with ship-derived gravity anomalies. Data with anomalous signs are detected and removed when the deviation exceeds three times the root mean square deviation. The six global earth gravitational models were evaluated in the experimental section: EGM2008, EIGEN6-C4, GECO, SGG-UGM-1, XGM2019E, and SGG-UGM-2. The evaluation results show that: in the East Vietnam Sea, when compared with 35855 points of shipborne data, the above models respectively have standard deviations of: ±6.046 mGal, ±7.559 mGal, ±5.781 mGal, ±5.832 mGal, ±5.448 mGal, and ±5.236 mGal; all models have mean deviations from shipborne gravity anomalies of about +5 mGal; The correlation between the models and the shipborne data is quite good; The model SGG-UGM-2 has the highest precision. The Free air gravity anomalies from this model have also been calculated over the territorial waters of Vietnam in the form of a grid with a mesh size of 1' × 1'.

Abstract: In this study we report the effect of sintering temperature on the low field magnetoresistance (LFMR) of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 manganite synthesized through sol-gel technique. The La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 has been sintered at 600°C, 700°C, 800°C, 900°C and 1200°C. The crystallite as well as particle size also show strong dependence on the sintering temperature. While the ferromagnetic – paramagnetic (FM-PM) transition temperature remains almost constant, the metal – insulation transition temperature drop gradual and the low field magnetoresistance (LFMR) increase with a decrease in grain size. We have analyzed our data based on the spin – polarized transport of conduction electrons at the grain boundaries.
