    Abstract: The occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms (CYBs) associated with cyanotoxins has been reported worldwide. While planktonic cyanobacteria and the contamination of microcystin (MC) in the water column have been the subject of many investigations, little attention is paid to the benthic cyanobacterial communities and MC concentration in the benthic environment. This study aimed to investigate the benthic cyanobacterial composition and MC concentration accumulated in sediment from the Tri An Reservoir (TAR), Dong Nai province. Benthic cyanobacterial communities and sediment were collected at five sites in dry and rainy seasons. The benthic cyanobacterial communities were morphological observation and identification. Different nitrogen, phosphorus species, and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) in sediment were analyzed. MCs concentration in sediment was quantified by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Results indicated that the sediment from the TAR was contaminated with nitrogen. A total of 19 species belonging to 12 genera, 3 orders of cyanobacteria were identified. In which, Anabaena, Oscillatoria, and Microcystis were the three most commonly found in the samples. Surface sediment samples contained high densities of colonial Microcystis. The Chl-a concentration in sediment in dry and rainy seasons ranged from 1.96–3.45 and 0.71–3.15 µg/g fresh weight (FW), respectively. MC was detected in sediment at all sites in both dry and rainy seasons with a concentration up to 191.4±14.2 ng/g FW. The outcome of this study provides basic knowledge on MC and potential MC-producing cyanobacteria in a drinking water supply. Further investigation on the toxic producing ability of the benthic cyanobacteria species from the Tri An Reservoir is required.

    Abstract: In this study, the molecular method was used to identify digenean cercariae from freshwater snails in Kim Son District (Ninh Binh Province) and Ba Vi District Ha Noi. A total of 9 snail species were collected and examined for cercarial infection. Three snail species (Radix swinhoei, Angulyagra polyzonata and Pomacea canaliculata) were not infected, while the other 6 species (Austropeplea viridis, Gyraulus convexiusculus, Parafossarulus striatulus, Bithynia fuchsiana, Melanoides tuberculata and Tarebia granifera) were infected with digenean cercariae at low infection rates, ranging from 2.3% to 6.3%. Seven cercarial groups were identified: Echinostome, Monostome, Parapleurophocercaria, Xiphidiocercaria, Fucocercaria, Gymnocephalous and Megalurous. Snails M. tuberculata and P. striatulus were infected with 4 cercarial groups, A. viridis and G. convexiusculus snails were infected with 2 groups, 2 snail species B. fuchsiana and T. granifera were infected with one group of cercaria. The results of ITS2 sequences analyses of the cercarial groups identified the larvae of 9 trematode species, namely Echinostoma revolutum, Echinochasmus japonicus, Notocotylus intestinalis, Philophthalmus gralli, Haplorchis pumilio, Procerovum cheni, Fasciola gigantica, Australapatemon burti and Cyathocotyle prussica. Among them the last three species, P. cheni, A. burti and C. prussica, were found for the first time in Vietnam. In addition, the ITS-2 sequence of Gymnocephalous cercariae which was previously identified as Sphaeridiotrema monorchis, from P. striatulus snail was 97% similar to that of Sphaeridiotrema pseudoglobulus. Likewise, ITS-2 sequence of Echinostome cercaria from B. fuchsiana snail was 93% similar to that of E. japonicus and that of Xiphidiocercaria cercaria from M. tuberculata snail was 93% similar to Lecithodendrium spathulatum.

    Abstract: Integral model is simple in utilization, low in CPU time calculation, suitable for a lot of practical applications of turbulent diffusion jet. However the assessment of accuracy of the model should be carried out by experimental data and by results of available multidirectional codes. The present paper shows the comparison of velocity profiles given by the integral model and the CFD FLUENT 6.0 Code. The difference in results given by the two models is lower than 10% when Reynolds number at the exit nozzle below 5000.

    Abstract: This paper presents the use of a commercial Navier-Stokes turbulent flow code (FLUENT) as a mean to evaluate the behavior of a Francis turbine runner for the design and off-design conditions. The flow in the runner is analyzed numerically at different operating points. The numerical results permit to observe physical phenomena in the runner that are important in the process of hydraulic turbo machinery design. Values of different velocity components in the flow, blade pressure distribution ... given by the model are compared with experimental data at nominal and off-design flow conditions. Computer resource involves in the flow analysis should be compatible with the need of design process of a runner. Therefore 12 hours of CPU time can be considered as acceptable for calculating at each operating point on a computer workstation of medium size power.

    Abstract: This study aimed to apply pre-ozonation for removal of disinfection by-products precursors to reduce the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) in Saigon river water. The pre-ozonation process was conducted in a lab-scale ozone contactor. The raw water sample was collected from Saigon River at the Hoa Phu pump station in Cu Chi District, Ho Chi Minh City. The suitable condition for pre-ozonation was found. At ozone dose of 1.5 mgO3/mgDOC, pH of 8.5, and contact time of 15 minutes, the removal efficiency of turbidity, color, iron, manganese, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), trihalomethanes formation potential (THMFP) were 36 %, 25 %, 56 %, 81 %, 35 %, and 46 %, respectively. These results indicated that the pre-ozonation could reduce DOC concentration and thus resulted in significant mitigation of THMs formation. In comparison with pre-chlorination, THMFP of raw water pretreated by pre-ozonation was lower. Moreover, this study showed that the pre-ozonation was more effective than pre-chlorination in terms of turbidity, color, manganese, and DOC removals.
