Abstract:
Floor vegetation is an important component of the forest ecosystems. Different ways of using vegetation as a bio-indicator of atmospheric pollution are discussed. Nearly 500 vegetation samples were resampled (between 1970 and 1990) in North-East of France. Changes in the floristic composition over a period of 20 years show a strong eutrophication at almost all the sampling sites. Nitrogen demanding species have increased. In some cases, an acidification of vegetation has also occured. Resampling and analysis of soils gives the same results : increase of nitrogen content. Possible causes for these changes are discussed. Atmospheric pollution, at least for nitrogen, seems to be the most likely. Our observations are in agreement with those reported in Switzerland, Germany, Sweden and Holland.
