    Description: Lithology, lithic petrology, planktonic foraminiferal abundances, and clastic grain sizes have been determined in a 30 m-long core recovered from the Barra Fan off northwest Scotland. The record extends back to around 45 kyr B.P., with sedimentation rates ranging between 50 and 200 cm/kyr. The abundance of ice-rafted debris indicates 16 glacimarine events, including temporal equivalents to Heinrich events 1-4. Enhanced concentrations of basaltic material derived from the British Tertiary Province suggest that the glacimarine sediments record variations in a glacial source on the Hebrides shelf margin. Glacimarine zones are separated by silty intervals with high planktonic foraminifera concentrations that reflect an interstadial circulation regime in the Rockall Trough. The results suggest that the last British Ice Sheet fluctuated with a periodicity of 2000-3000 years, in common with the Dansgaard-Oeschger climate cycle.

    Description: Phosphatized bioclastic limestones of Early Tertiary age have been dredged from the crest of a seamount in the equatorial Atlantic near 9°N, 21°W. The samples were recovered from water depths of 700 to 970 m but clearly were deposited in a high-energy reefal environment, thus indicating significant Tertiary subsidence. The vertical movement is beleived to reflect reactivation of an old structural line, the Guinée Fracture Zone, which may have had important effects on the transfer of bottom waters of polar origin between the Sierra Leone and Gambia basins. Examination of foraminiferal limestone coating the shallow water material suggests that deep-water conditions were established on the seamount by Middle Miocene time. All phosphatized samples are covered with a layer of ferromanganese oxides which, from textural and faunal evidence, is Palaeocene or Eocene in age and of shallow water origin. Pervasive phosphatization of the bioclastic limestones appears to have been accomplished before the end of the Eocene while the crest of the seamount was near sea level, because Upper Eocene limestone of shallow water facies is unaffected by such radical diagenesis. Phosphatization probably was associated with vigorous upwelling near the seamount and has been taken to an unusually advanced stage, resulting in a phosphoritesof high economic grade. P2O5 contents are in the range of 37 to 41%. The purity of the phosphorites may be related to the intensity of upwelling during the Early Tertiary, but other factors such as the paucity of terrigenous detritus, frequent reworking of the sedimentary capping of the seamount, and a high primary porosity of the limestones may have been important in their information. The Early Tertiary period of phosphorite deposition on the seamount and in northwest Africa ended before the close of Eocene time in both areas, while shallow water conditions prevailed. It is argued that the cessation of phosphorite formation reflects major changes in the surface circulation of the Atlantic during the Eocene.

    Description: The sea floor of the western Pacific is covered by five stratigraphic units: (l)an eastward thinning wedge of late Tertiary silty clay, primarily of volcanic origin, (2) a Cretaceous to Tertiary zeolitic red clay, (3) a Late Cretaceous to Tertiary chalk/chert sequence, (4) a Cretaceous clay, and (5) a basal chalk/chert sequence. The basal chalk was deposited on the young crust at the crest of the mid-oceanic ridge, while the upper chalk was deposited beneath the equator, and the abyssal clays were deposited in abyssal depths in mid latitudes. A kinematic model has been constructed that outlines the deposition of these units on growing crust, which not only was displaced westward away from the accretion center of the mid-oceanic ridge, but northward under the equator. The average northward component of motion for the Pacific plate has been 2 cm per year from 0 to 30 m.y. and 4.4 cm per year from 30 to 100 m.y. The deep-sea deposits of the Pacific are basically and systematically time transgressive. Claims of general synchroneity for either lithostratigraphy or acoustostratigraphy are rejected as inconsistent with both the drilling data and the kinematic model of Pacific pelagic stratigraphy. A few more well sampled holes in the ancient Pacific plate combined with an appropriately refined kinematic model should yield a 'rather detailed history of the Pacific plate since the Jurassic.

    Description: The results are discussed of a geophysical survey undertaken by R.R.S. Discovery II early in 1962 in an area centred on 29° 15'N, 25° 5'W at the western extremity of the Madeira-Cape Verde Abyssal Plain. Seismic investigations show that the sediments are underlain by an intermediate layer about 2 km in thickness of velocity 4.1-5.4 km/sec which overlies a deep layer 5.2-km thick of velocity 6.3-6.8 km/sec. Refracted arrivals on the longest seismic line give a depth of 13.2 km to the M discontinuity. Magnetic results indicate that the topography of the abyssal hills in the western part of the area is probably continued eastwards as sub-bottom relief beneath the sediments of the abyssal plain. They also support the hypothesis that the intermediate seismic layer (layer 2) is composed predominantly of volcanic rocks. Examination of a well-defined magnetic anomaly over one topographic feature ("The Madcap Volcano") shows it to be composed of magnetized rocks (I = 8.4 × 10**-3 e.m.u./cm**3) having a direction of magnetization which points upwards at 25° with an azimuth of 305°. Measurements at ten heat flow stations show that the average geothermal flux in this region is 1.20 (±0.11) µcal/cm**2/sec.
