Description: Planktic foraminiferal oxygen isotopes, Mg/Ca and Mg/Ca-derived SST estimates of sediment core SO256_30-1 (GeoB22230-1). Oxygen isotope analyses were carried out by the isotope laboratory of MARUM, University of Bremen, on a Finnigan MAT 251 mass spectrometer, which is connected with automatic lines for carbonate preparation. Isotope data were calibrated against the international Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite (VPDB) standard by using an in‐house carbonate standard, which has been calibrated to the National Bureau of Standards 19 standard. The long‐term analytical standard deviation is below ±0.07‰. Sample preparation for Mg/Ca followed the procedure of Barker et al. (2003, doi:10.1029/2003GC000559). Mg/Ca measurements were performed at MARUM, University of Bremen, on an Agilent Technologies 700 Series Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrophotometer (ICP-OES), which is connected to a Cetax ASX 520 autosampler. To convert Mg/Ca to temperature, we applied the species-specific Mg/Ca-temperature calibration of Anand et al. (2003; doi:10.1029/2002PA000846) with an assumed exponential constant of 0.09.

Description: Biogenic opal (BSi) concentrations were analysed as indicator for past primary productivity on gravity core MSM45_19-2 from the northern Labrador Shelf. Gravity core MSM45_19-2 was obtained during R/V Maria S. Merian expedition MSM45 (58°45.68'N, 61°56.25'W, water depth: 202 m) in 2015 (Schneider et al., 2016). Biogenic opal was determined at Dalhousie University following the method of (Mortlock and Froelich , 1989). Briefly, amorphous silica was extracted from ca. 20 mg subsamples using a 2 M Na2 CO3 solution at 85°C for 5 h, followed by the measurement of dissolved silica concentrations by molybdenum blue spectrophotometry.

Description: Significant uncertainties persist in the reconstruction of past sea surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific, especially regarding the amplitude of the glacial cooling and the details of the post-glacial warming. Here we present the first regional calibration of alkenone unsaturation in surface sediments versus mean annual sea surface temperatures (maSST). Based on 81 new and 48 previously published data points, it is shown that open ocean samples conform to established global regressions of Uk'37 versus maSST and that there is no systematic bias from seasonality in the production or export of alkenones, or from surface ocean nutrient concentrations or salinity. The flattening of the regression at the highest maSSTs is found to be statistically insignificant. For the near-coastal Peru upwelling zone between 11-15°S and 76-79°W, however, we corroborate earlier observations that Uk'37 SST estimates significantly over-estimate maSSTs at many sites. We posit that this is caused either by uncertainties in the determination of maSSTs in this highly dynamic environment, or by biasing of the alkenone paleothermometer toward El Niño events as postulated by Rein et al. (2005).
