Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. A study of the hydrography of the Kiel Fjord has been made from December 1966 to July 1967. On the basis of isopleths, the circulation of the various water masses in the Kiel harbour are discussed. 2. An extensive circulation occurs in the upper 15 m of the harbour. Only three excavations are effectively excluded from this circulation. The stratification in these excavations differs in each case, and seems to be related to their position in the harbour. 3. The effect of a highly saline brine pumped into Kiel harbour is studied and the extension of the mixed brine layer determined. Its spreading can be traced best with the aid of T,S-diagrams. 4. The results of this survey show that the salt brine mixes rapidly with the water masses of the fjord. The pollution caused by the brine cannot be traced beyond 1000 m from the location of the initial brine discharge.

Description: Interstitial waters were collected at only two sites during Leg 82, Sites 558 and 563. Only very small changes in dissolved calcium and magnesium occur, presumably resulting from reactions in the underlying basement basalts. Dissolved strontium profiles indicate maxima, which can be understood in terms of carbonate recrystallization processes. Data on Sr/Ca in carbonates cannot be used to estimate the extent of recrystallization that has occurred in these sediments.

Description: Changes in the dissolved oxygen content, the alkalinity, and the pH in sea water near the ocean floor are interpreted in terms of chemical and biochemical processes at the sediment water interface. A simple model provides a plausible explanation of the observed phenomena. Special emphasis is given to the importance of borate corrections in the calculation of the solution effects of calcium carbonate.

Description: Offset of prograde hydrothermal alterations by retrograde reactions is evident in sediments from a piston core (PC6, 8 m long) from the Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California. Geochemical and mineralogical analyses of sediments and pore fluids show superimposed geochemical signals that indicate currently active reactions are modifying previously formed secondary solids. Hydrothermal barite was formed in a previously active flow channel between 150 and 250 cm depth. Hydrothermal gypsum is presently dissolving at depths 〉780 cm, below which hydrothermal fluid flow is channeled by a secondary dolomite layer. Thermal stress of organic matter generates hydrothermal gas and petroleum having wide ranges of compositions and maturities. A significant amount of hydrothermally generated oil has been transported laterally through a porous debris flow (approx. 240 cm subbottom), overwhelming the indigenous bituminous matter. Water soluble petroleum constituents have disseminated throughout the cored sediments. From 400 to 700 cm depth the immature organic matter continues to experience thermally-enhanced diagenesis, and an even higher thermal stress has occurred at the bottom of the core. Enhanced bacterial degradation of organic matter has led to depletion of pore water sulfate and enrichment of ammonium (NH4+) in both pore fluid and sediment, resulting in formation of NH4+ bearing secondary clay minerals at depths below 780 cm.

Description: Interstitial water analyses of samples collected at Sites 544-547 of DSDP Leg 79 are presented. In Site 547 chloride concentrations increase to almost 80% of the halite saturation values. Gypsum occurrences in the sediments immediately overlying the halite deposit can be explained in terms of migration of Ca**2+ and SO2**2- from the underlying evaporites. At shallower depths sulfate concentrations decrease rapidly as a result of sulfate reduction processes. The same processes lead to the removal of calcium in the form of calcium carbonate. At Site 547, the chloride concentration depth profile suggests a maximum of dissolved chloride which may be the result of advective flow from nearby (abput 6 km) evaporite salt diapirs.

Description: Interstitial water analyses from sediments collected during Leg 25 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project have revealed that in the southwest Indian Ocean, great chemical activity exists in sediments in various depositional environments. Variable sedimentation rates allow us to set some interesting boundary conditions on chemical and transport processes in these interstitial waters, particularly with regard to the distribution of dissolved sulfate. In terrigenous rapidly deposited sediments, large depletions are observed in magnesium and potassium, whereas relatively small decreases in dissolved calcium occur. In slowly deposited detrital sediments, also, large decreases in potassium and magnesium coincide with very large calcium increases. In truly pelagic sediments, a one to one replacement of magnesium by calcium is observed in the interstitial waters, presumably due to reactions in the basal sediment layers. Biogenous deposits have great influence on dissolved silica (sponge spicules and radiolarians) and on dissolved strontium (carbonate recrystallization). Otherwise, dissolved silica reflects the clay mineralogy and shows variations which seem particularly dependent on the presence or absence of kaolinite. Variable dissolved manganese values reflect reducing conditions and/or availability of manganese in the solid phases for mobilization in reducing sediments.
