    Description: The global spread of Eucalyptus pathogens is thought to be facilitated by the trade in seed for the establishment of new plantations and breeding programmes. In this study, we used high-throughput amplicon sequencing to elucidate whether this might be true for the Eucalyptus stem pathogen Teratosphaeria zuluensis in South Africa. DNA libraries were obtained for seed-capsules, clean seed, 1-month-old seedlings grown in a phytotron, plants grown in vitro in a tissue culture facility as well as leaves and stems of 3-month-old seedlings exposed to a Eucalyptus plantation environment. The DNA libraries were sequenced using high-throughput Illumina MiSeq and 454 technologies. Sequencing revealed the presence of several OTUs in the Botryosphaeriaceae, Mycosphaerellaceae and Teratosphaeriaceae in seed and seed-capsules and amongst these, OTUs that cluster close to T. zuluensis . OTUs from the Mycosphaerellaceae were also recovered from seedlings grown in a phytotron, in vitro propagated seedlings and those exposed to the plantation environment. The results support the view that important Eucalyptus pathogens, including T. zuluensis , can be spread via the trade in seed.

    Description: BACKGROUND Few data exist on factors associated with hypertension (HTN) remission post-bariatric surgery. No information on factors that may predict HTN relapse is available. The aims were to assess the HTN remission and relapse rates at 1 and 3 years, respectively, post-bariatric surgery, and determine predictive factors. METHODS A nonrandomized prospective cohort study on severely obese patients undergoing laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) with a follow-up of 36 months was conducted between 2005 and 2011. Criteria for HTN diagnosis were current treatment with antihypertensive agents and/or systolic blood pressure (BP) 〉140mm Hg and/or diastolic BP 〉90mm Hg. HTN remission was defined as normalization of BP maintained after discontinuation of medical treatment. RESULTS A total of 197 patients were included in the study. HTN was present in 47.7%; 68.1% of hypertensive patients showed HTN remission 1 year after the surgical procedure, 21.9% of whom had relapsed at 3 years. The number of antihypertensive drugs prior to surgery was associated with a lower remission rate at the first year and a higher recurrence at 3 years. However, a smaller weight loss during the first year was associated with increased HTN recurrence at 3 years. CONCLUSION HTN relapses in 1 of 5 hypertensives who have achieved remission at the first year of follow-up. Weight loss during the first postoperative year should be encouraged to avoid HTN relapse at 3 years.

Data from fur seal scats reveal when Namibian Merluccius capensis are hatched and how fast they grow. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 70: . Scat samples were collected regularly at several breeding colonies of Cape fur seals along the Namibian coast. Merluccius capensis otoliths were obtained from these samples, identified, and measured. Cohorts were easily distinguishable using otolith length measurements converted to fish total length. Growth rates of 2- to 21-month-old hake and hatch dates for each of 15 cohorts were estimated from September 1994 to October 2009 (1994–2008 cohorts) using a Schnute growth function and a non-linear mixed-effects model. The function describing growth of these young hake was length L t (cm) at age t (years) L t = 3.17 + (25.0 – 3.17) x [1 – e –0.665 x ( t – 0.140) ]/[1 – e –0.665 x (1.74–0.140) ]. Cohort-specific random effects showed a population hatch date estimate of 31 July (austral winter), varying by 94 days among cohorts, from 31 May (1996 cohort) to 1 September (2004 cohort). The mean growth rate from ages 6 to 12 months was 1.26 cm month –1 for the population, ranging between 0.97 cm month –1 (1996 cohort) and 1.38 cm month –1 (2004 cohort). As this rate is almost double the previously estimated value, which is currently used in the stock assessment models, this result may have major implications for the current stock assessment results and the management of the stock. Re-examination of growth rates needs to be extended to older fish.

    Description: Motivation: Most anatomical ontologies are species-specific, whereas a framework for comparative studies is needed. We describe the vertebrate Homologous Organs Groups ontology, vHOG, used to compare expression patterns between species. Results: vHOG is a multispecies anatomical ontology for the vertebrate lineage. It is based on the HOGs used in the Bgee database of gene expression evolution. vHOG version 1.4 includes 1184 terms, follows OBO principles and is based on the Common Anatomy Reference Ontology (CARO). vHOG only describes structures with historical homology relations between model vertebrate species. The mapping to species-specific anatomical ontologies is provided as a separate file, so that no homology hypothesis is stated within the ontology itself. Each mapping has been manually reviewed, and we provide support codes and references when available.     Description: SUMMARY In 1992, a large and dense array of geophones was placed around the geyser vent of Old Faithful, in the Yellowstone National Park, to determine the origin of the seismic hydrothermal noise recorded at the surface of the geyser and to understand its dynamics. Old Faithful Geyser (OFG) is a small-scale hydrothermal system where a two-phase flow mixture erupts every 40 to 100 min in a high continuous vertical jet. Using Matched Field Processing (MFP) techniques on 10-min-long signal, we localize the source of the seismic pulses recorded at the surface of the geyser. Several MFP approaches are compared in this study, the frequency-incoherent and frequency-coherent approach, as well as the linear Bartlett processing and the non-linear Minimum Variance Distorsionless Response (MVDR) processing. The different MFP techniques used give the same source position with better focalization in the case of the MVDR processing. The retrieved source position corresponds to the geyser conduit at a depth of 12 m and the localization is in good agreement with in situ measurements made at Old Faithful in past studies.

    Description: SUMMARY The Solfatara is one of the major volcanoes of the Phlegrean Fields ( Campi Flegrei ) volcanic complex, and it is located in a densely populated area a few kilometres west of the city of Naples. It is an active resurgent caldera that has been characterized by a rich history of surface–ground deformation and soil diffuse degassing and fumarolic emissions, which are indications of the top of a hydrothermal plume. A seismic survey was completed in May 2009 for the characterization of the main subsurface features of the Solfatara. Using the complete data set, we have carried out surface wave inversion with high spatial resolution. A classical minimization of a least-squares objective function was first computed to retrieve the dispersion curves of the surface waves. Then, the fitting procedure between the data and a three-sediment-layer forward model was carried out (to a depth of 7 m), using an improved version of the neighbourhood algorithm. The inversion results indicate a NE-SW fault, which is not visible at the surface. This was confirmed by a temperature survey conducted in 2010. A passive seismic experiment localized the ambient noise sources that correlate well with the areas of high CO 2 flux and high soil temperatures. Finally, considering that the intrinsic attenuation is proportional to the frequency, a centroid analysis provides an overview of the attenuation of the seismic waves, which is closely linked to the petrophysical properties of the rock. These different approaches that merge complete active and passive seismic data with soil temperature and CO 2 flux maps confirm the presence of the hydrothermal system plume. Some properties of the top of the plume are indicated and localized.

    Description: The evolution of ants is marked by remarkable adaptations that allowed the development of very complex social systems. To identify how ant-specific adaptations are associated with patterns of molecular evolution, we searched for signs of positive selection on amino-acid changes in proteins. We identified 24 functional categories of genes which were enriched for positively selected genes in the ant lineage. We also reanalyzed genome-wide data sets in bees and flies with the same methodology to check whether positive selection was specific to ants or also present in other insects. Notably, genes implicated in immunity were enriched for positively selected genes in the three lineages, ruling out the hypothesis that the evolution of hygienic behaviors in social insects caused a major relaxation of selective pressure on immune genes. Our scan also indicated that genes implicated in neurogenesis and olfaction started to undergo increased positive selection before the evolution of sociality in Hymenoptera. Finally, the comparison between these three lineages allowed us to pinpoint molecular evolution patterns that were specific to the ant lineage. In particular, there was ant-specific recurrent positive selection on genes with mitochondrial functions, suggesting that mitochondrial activity was improved during the evolution of this lineage. This might have been an important step toward the evolution of extreme lifespan that is a hallmark of ants.

    Description: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) constitute an important class of gene regulators. While models have been proposed to explain their appearance and expansion, the validation of these models has been difficult due to the lack of comparative studies. Here, we analyze miRNA evolutionary patterns in two mammals, human and mouse, in relation to the age of miRNA families. In this comparative framework, we confirm some predictions of previously advanced models of miRNA evolution, e.g. that miRNAs arise more frequently de novo than by duplication, or that the number of protein-coding gene targeted by miRNAs decreases with evolutionary time. We also corroborate that miRNAs display an increase in expression level with evolutionary time, however we show that this relation is largely tissue-dependent, and especially low in embryonic or nervous tissues. We identify a bias of tag-sequencing techniques regarding the assessment of breadth of expression, leading us, contrary to predictions, to find more tissue-specific expression of older miRNAs. Together, our results refine the models used so far to depict the evolution of miRNA genes. They underline the role of tissue-specific selective forces on the evolution of miRNAs, as well as the potential co-evolution patterns between miRNAs and the protein-coding genes they target.
