Description: The monograph presents results of comprehensive geological and geophysical studies carried out in 1973 and 1976 during Cruises 54 and 58 of R/V "Vityaz" in the Eastern Indian Ocean. On the base of obtained data a description of topography, magnetic and gravity fields, structure of the sedimentary series and deep crustal structure of the East Indian Ridge, Central, West Australian and Cocos Basins, the Sunda Trench has been done. Materials on petrography, petrochemistry and geochemistry of igneous rocks in the region have been summarized. New geological and geophysical information has been compared with with DSDP materials. Tectonics and geological history of the Eastern Indian Ocean are under consideration.

Notes: Abstract A study is made of the Cherenkov generation and dissipation of the energy of magnetoacoustic vibrations in a flat metal layer located in the field of two traveling waves of current. It is demonstrated that the temperature field in the layer is in fact nongradient, and the heating rate is much higher than that in the case of previously studied mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract In-situ elastic properties in deep boreholes are controlled by several factors, mainly by lithology, petrofabric, fluid-filled cracks and pores. In order to separate the effects of different factors it is useful to extract lithology-controlled part from observedin-situ velocities. For that purpose we calculated mineralogical composition and isotropic crack-free elastic properties in the lower part of the Kola borehole from bulk chemical compositions of core samples. We use a new technique of petrophysical modeling based on thermodynamic approach. The reasonable accuracy of the modeling is confirmed by comparison with the observations of mineralogical composition and laboratory measurements of density and elastic wave velocities in upper crustal crystalline rocks at high confining pressure. Calculations were carried out for 896 core samples from the depth segment of 6840–10535m. Using these results we estimate density and crack-free isotropic elastic properties of 554 lithology-defined layers composing this depth segment. Average synthetic P- wave velocity appears to be 2.7% higher than the velocity from Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP), and 5% higher than sonic log velocity. Average synthetic S-wave velocity is 1.4 % higher than that from VSP. These differences can be explained by superposition of effects of fabric-related anisotropy, cracks aligned parallel to the foliation plain, and randomly oriented cracks, with the effect of cracks being the predominant control. Low sonic log velocities are likely caused by drilling-induced cracking (hydrofractures) in the borehole walls. The calculated synthetic density and velocity cross-sections can be used for much more detailed interpretations, for which, however, new, more detailed and reliable seismic data are required.

Notes: Summary The structure and properties of infectious and formaldehyde-treated particles of tick-borne encephalitis virus, concentrated and purified by chromatography on macroporous glass, were studied. In addition to complete virions, such preparations contain some incomplete forms that differ in density, morphology and protein composition (incomplete forms do not contain nucleocapsid protein). The physico-chemical analysis of complete virions showed that formaldehyde treatment causes a) the formation of glycoprotein dimers and b) a portion of nucleocapsid protein to become tightly cross-linked with viral RNA. Formaldehyde treatment of incomplete forms resulted only in the formation of a small amount of glycoprotein dimers. Incomplete forms and glycoprotein extracted from inactivated preparations had protective and antigenic activity.

Notes: Abstract A local-nonequilibrium model of the diffusion of a solute during the rapid solidification of a binary alloy is considered. The model has two characteristic parameters: the diffusion velocity through the interface V Di and the diffusion velocity in the bulk of the liquid phase V D. The influence of local nonequilibrium on the separation of an impurity, the stability of the interface, and the dependence of the temperature of the interface on the velocity of the solidification front is investigated. A comparison with experiment is made.
