Notes: [Auszug] IN the discussion as to the teaching of science I have failed to find any distinct expression of an element in the subject which has for years seemed to me of the highest importance, and to which I should like with your permission to call attention. In those of our schools where science is ...

Notes: [Auszug] SINCE it was first unequivocally shown that the milk yield of lactating cows could be increased by feeding dried thyroid gland1 or injecting thyroxine2,3, many experiments (see Reineke4 for review of some of them) have been carried out on the ...

Notes: [Auszug] Early experiments designed to determine the rate of secretion of milk did not allow for variations in the amount of this residual milk, and it was assumed that the yield of milk obtained at a milking was a true measure of the amount secreted since the last milking. These experiments8'4 indicated ...

Notes: [Auszug] ON Saturday last, October 4, at 7.45 p.m., I noticed the following phenomenon:—The sky was clouded entirely, when, happening to look to the west-north-west, I saw a well-defined streak of light, starting on a level with some trees in a small wood and moving roughly horizontally towards the ...

Notes: [Auszug] I WOULD ask whether it is quite fair to assume that, because Convocation has rejected the Charter proposed for the University of London, it therefore follows that that body is out of sympathy with the attempts that are being made to establish a “real University,” whatever that may mean. Is it ...

Notes: [Auszug] Stubican and Roy5 observed that an increase in the amount of magnesium in octahedral sites in a mus-covite-phengite series caused the absorption band with frequency 935 cm.-1 to become more poorly defined. They allocated this band to H-O ... X3+ by comparison of spectra for minerals with their ...

Notes: [Auszug] An important feature arising from our investigation is the relationship between the meridional ExB drift of the plasma and west-east ExB drift relative to the Earth. This relation results from the assumption of an incompressible magnetic field. Rishbeth and Hanson2 and Murphy4 have shown that for a ...

Notes: [Auszug] LORD RAYLEIGH'S interesting communication on superheated steam in your last issue (p. 375) leads me to ask whether it is generally known that solutions can be heated up to temperatures higher than 100° by passing into them steam at 100°. The late Peter Spence at the Exeter meeting of the ...

Notes: Replication techniques for electron microscopy have been used to relate the microstructural characteristics and physical properties of polyethylene and polypropylene. This study included polymer particles and molded pads. The low penetrating power and damage from heating prevents the direct examination of polymer particles in the microscope. Replication, however, has given details of the surface structure of these particles. The spherulitie structure of these polymers in molded form has been determined by replicating etched surfaces. Marked differences in the spherulitic structure of polyethylene and polypropylene have been observed The effect of molecular weight on spherulitic structure of both polymers has also been established.
