    Notes: Abstract A tetranuclear manganese (IV) complex, [L4Mn4O6](ClO4)4·2H2O (1), with 1,4,7-triazacyclononane (L) as the capping ligands, has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction; monoclinic, space group P21/n with a = 21.335(6) Å, b = 11.387(3) Å, c = 21.788 (6) Å, β = 111.410 (6)°, V = 4928 (2) Å, Z = 4. Each manganese atom has a distorted octahedral environment comprised of three facially coordinated amine nitrogen atoms and three oxygen atoms, and the cation is an idealized tetrahedron. The Mn4O6 4+ cation corresponds to an adamantane skeleton.

    Notes: Abstract A one-dimensional chain complex, {[Co(bpm)2(N3)2][Co(bpm)2(H2O)2]} (ClO4)2, (bpm being bis(pyrazol-l-yl)methane), has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction: triclinic, space group P - 1 with a = 8.805(2) Å, b = 8.902(2) Å, c = 13.621(3) Å, α = 84.27(3)°, β = 84.63(3)°, γ = 80.05(3)°, V = 1043.2(4) Å3, Z = 1. Two cobalt atoms have ideal octahedral environments with different coordination atoms. One cobalt atom is six-coordinated with nitrogen atoms from two bpm ligands and two azide ligands, while the other cobalt atom is coordinated by four nitrogen atoms from bpm and two oxygen atoms from water molecules. The complex forms one-dimensional chain through hydrogen bonds.

    Notes: Abstract In order to study how polyploidy affects life history patterns in animals, we have examined sympatric diploid and polyploid brine shrimp (Artemia parthenogenetica) from China, Italy and Spain under laboratory conditions. At optimal temperature and salinity (25°C and 90 ppt), diploids from the three populations had much higher intrinsic rates of increase, higher fecundity, faster developmental rates, and larger brood sizes than their sympatric polyploids. The Chinese and Italian populations were selected for further analysis to determine the life history responses of diploids and polyploids to temperature and salinity changes. Under intermediate and high salinities, Chinese and Italian polyploids produced most of their offspring as dormant cysts while their sympatric diploids produced most of their offspring as nauplii. This relationship is reversed in the Spanish diploid-polyploid complex. For the Chinese population at 25° C, pentaploid clones had higher developmental rates than diploid clones at 35 ppt; at 90 ppt, diploid clones had higher developmental rates than the pentaploids. Italian diploids and tetraploids had different responses to variation in both temperature (25° C and 31° C) and salinity (30 ppt and 180 ppt). Our results demonstrate that relative fitness of the two cytotypes is a function of environmental conditions and that sympatric diploids and polyploids respond differently to environmental changes. Chinese and Italian polyploids are expected to have lower fitness than their sympatric diploids when the physical environment is not stressful and when intraspecific competition is important. However, polyploids may have advantages over sympatric diploids in stressful habitats or when they encounter short-term lethal temperatures. These results suggest that polyploid Artemia have evolved a suite of life-history characteristics adapting them to environments that contrast to those of their sympatric diploids.

    Notes: Abstract Four novel complexes of nickel(II), Ni(tfac)2(NITPa)2 (1), Ni(tfac)2(NITPhNO2)2 (2), Ni(pfpr)2(NITPa)2 (3) and Ni(pfpr)2(NITPhNO2)2 (4), [tfac=trifluoro- acetato, NITPa=2-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl)-4,4,5, 5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxy-3-oxid, NITPhNO2= 2-(3-nitrophenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxid, pfpr=pentafluoropropionato], have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, i.r., and electronic spectra, and molar conductances. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility for complexes (1) and (3) was measured (4–300K). The observed data were successfully simulated giving the exchange integral J=−1.48cm−1 for (1) and J=−1.25cm−1 for (3). These results indicate a weak antiferromagnetic spin exchange interaction between nickel(II) ion and the radicals.

    Notes: Abstract Purpose. Organic cation transporters in the renal proximal tubule are important in the secretion of many clinically used drugs and their metabolites. The goal of this study was to determine the mechanisms of guanidine transport in human kidney. Methods. Brush-border membrane vesicles were prepared from donor human kidneys deemed unsuitable for renal transplantation. Results. Uptake of [14C]-guanidine (50 μM) in the vesicles, as determined by rapid filtration, was significantly greater in the presence of an outwardly-directed proton gradient, at all early time points, than in the absence of the gradient. Proton-stimulated uptake of [14C]-guanidine at 30 sec (32.0 ± 1.24 pmol/mg protein) was significantly inhibited by a number of organic cations including 5 mM unlabeled guanidine (14.8 ± 1.84 pmol/mg protein) and 5 mM MIBA (9.14 ± 3.80 pmol/ mg protein), but not by 5 mM TEA (28.4 ± 5.67 pmol/mg protein). Guanidine, but not TEA, trans-stimulated [14C]-guanidine uptake. Conversely, TEA, but not guanidine, trans-stimulated [14C]-TEA uptake in the vesicles. The proton-dependent transport of guanidine was characterized by a Km of 3.52 ± 0.42 mM (SE) and a Vmax of 34.6 ± 8.64 pmol/mg protein/sec (SE). Conclusions. These results demonstrate that guanidine transport in human renal brush border membrane vesicles is stimulated by a proton gradient. Evidence was obtained suggesting that the transporter for guanidine is distinct from the previously described organic cation proton antiporter for TEA.

    Notes: Abstract We examined genetic variation in sympatric diploid and polyploid brine shrimp Artemia parthenogenetica from each of three populations (China, Italy and Spain). Italian and Spanish tetraploids are closely related (I=0.964). Diploids and tetraploids within each of the two European populations are also closely related (mean I=0.905). Most alleles found in diploids also exist in sympatric polyploids. In contrast, the asexual Artemia (2N, 4N and 5N) in our study share few alleles with their close sexual relative, A. tunisiana (mean I=0.002). These results, as well as the work of other authors, strongly suggest that at least the tetraploid Artemia in our study have an autopolyploid origin. Clonal diversity of polyploid Artemia can be very high at least in some population. Both diploids and polyploids had low clonal diversities in the populations dominated by polyploids and high clonal diversities in the population dominated by diploids. The most common genotypes of sympatric diploid and polyploid Artemia frequently differed. Some alleles occurred only in diploids, while others were restricted to polyploids. These results suggest that polyploidy in Artemia has led to genetic divergence from diploid progenitors, and that ploidy-level variation must also be considered in developing an understanding of spatial and temporal allozyme polymorphism in asexual populations.

    Notes: Abstract Five readily discernible seminal events have moulded port-hinterland relations in Manchuria, and accordingly, have dictated the scale and scope of port operations. They are, in chronological order, the Treaty of Tientsin and the attendant opening of Newchang (Yingkou) to foreign trade in 1862, the lease to Russia in 1898 of the tip of the Liaodong peninsula and the founding thereon of the port of Dalny (Dalian), the seizure of Dalian by Japan in 19O5, the closure of Manchuria's ports to foreign trade with the accession of communist rule in China in 1949, and the reversal of that policy in no uncertain terms during the 1980s consequent upon China's conversion to “open port” thinking. Scarcely acknowledged because less perceptible, changes in the technology governing the characteristics and employment of ships have been equally critical in regulating port operations in this part of northern China. In particular, the twin driving forces leading to ship enlargement and specialisation have induced fundamental reorganisation of both waterfront and inland transfer facilities. These adaptations, abrupt and gradual, politically-inspired or technologically-motivated, are grist to the mill of this study.
