Notes: Abstract Optoelectronic generation of well characterized ultrashort electrical pulses plays an important role in the calibration of fast-sampling oscilloscopes. In this paper the authors describe the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) pulse generator, comprising a femtosecond laser and an ultrafast photoconductive switch which can generate electrical pulses as short as 650 fs. The photoconductive switch consists of a GaAs substrate with a top GaAs layer grown under low temperature conditions to ensure a subpicosecond recombination rate. The technique of electrooptic sampling is used to measure pulses on planar transmission lines, such as coplanar waveguide and coplanar stripline. Good agreement is shown between electrooptic sampling measurement and the modelling of pulse propagation along a coplanar waveguide, enabling one to optimize a design of a calibration test source. The use of a pulse generator to calibrate a 50 GHz sampling oscilloscope is described.

Notes: Abstract Dicesium Di-μ-sulfatosulphatobisaquothorate(IV), H4O14S3Cs2Th, (M r =821.8) crystallized from water in the monoclinic space groupP21/c (No. 14), witha=6.415(2),b=15.95(1),c=13.078(8) Å,β=90.88(4)°,V=1338(14) Å3,Z=4,D x =4.08 g cm−3, MoKα (λ=0.71069 Å),μ=195.8 cm−1,F(000)=1407.3, room temperature, finalR=0.086 for 1699 unique observed reflexions. Two of the sulfate groups are tridentate (chelating and bridging) and the other is bidentate chelating. As the waters are both coordinated the thorium is 10-coordinate. It shows an unusual 2/4/2/2 geometry.

Notes: Abstract Whistler-mode signals from a single VLF transmitter that have propagated in the same duct, have been observed simultaneously at Faraday, Antarctica (65°S, 64°W) and Dunedin, New Zealand (46°S, 171°E). The signals received have group-delay times that differ in the order of 10 ms, which can be explained by the differences in southern-hemisphere sub-ionospheric propagation time from duct exit region to receiver for the two sites. This difference has been used to determine the location of the duct exit region, with confirmation provided by arrival-bearing information from both sites. The whistler-mode signals typically occur one or two days after geomagnetic activity, with Kp\geq5. The sub-ionospheric-propagation model, LWPC, is used to estimate the whistler-mode power radiated from the duct exit region. These results are then combined with estimated loss values for ionospheric and ducted transmission to investigate the role of wave-particle amplification or absorption. On at least half of the events studied, plasmaspheric amplification of the signals appears to be needed to explain the observed whistler-mode signal strengths.

Notes: Abstract The ability of the anabolic steroid, stanozolol, to stimulate procollagenase production by human synovial and skin fibroblasts was examined in anin vitro assay system. Stanozolol is used therapeutically to treat a variety of connective tissue and vascular disorders and its clinical effects suggest that it can modulate connective tissue breakdown. The results showed that stanozolol was capable in a dose dependent manner, of significantly stimulating procollagenase production by skin fibroblasts. However, in three synovial fibroblast lines no evidence was found of increased collagenase production following treatment with stanozolol; although the synovial fibroblasts secreted significantly increased amounts of procollagenase in response to IL-1. These results may shed some light on the mechanism of actionin vivo of stanozolol in the treatment of connective tissue disorders.

Notes: Summary The Perkin-Elmer Elemental Analyzer has been evaluated for the analysis of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen in typical petroleum samples. Comparison of the Elemental Analyzer results were made with carbon and hydrogen analyses by the Pregl method, oxygen by the Unterzaucher method, and nitrogen results from the automated micro Dumas Analyzer. The results obtained by the automated method were found comparable to those obtained by conventional methods. The automated method was found useful for the analysis of nitrogen in petroleum samples ranging from 0.05 to 0.1% N, a borderline level that presents difficulty for conventional methods. Samples of transformer oil containing known amounts of added phenol were analyzed for oxygen at the 0.2 to 1.0% O level.

Notes: Abstract Sediment lithology and mineralogy, as well as ostracode, plant macrofossil and stable isotope stratigraphies of lake sediment cores, are used to reconstruct late Holocene hydrologic changes at Kenosee Lake, a relatively large, hyposaline lake in southeastern Saskatchewan. Chronological control is provided by AMS radiocarbon ages of upland and shoreline plant macrofossils. All indicators outline an early, low-water, saline phase of lake history (4100–3000 BP), when the basin was occupied by a series of small, interconnected, sulfate-rich brine pools, as opposed to the single, topographically-closed lake that exists today. A rapid rise in lake-level (3000–2300 BP) led to the establishment of carbonate-rich, hyposaline lake conditions like those today. Lithostratigraphic data and ostracode assemblages indicate peak salinities were attained early in this period of lake infilling, suggesting that the lake-level rise was initially driven by an influx of saline groundwater. Lake-level and water chemistry have remained relatively stable over the last 2000 years, compared to earlier events. Because of a lack of datable organic material in sediments deposited during the last 2000 years, the chronology of recent events is not well resolved. Plant macrofossil, lithostratigraphic and ostracode evidence suggests that lake draw-down, accompanied by slightly higher than present salinites, occurred sometime prior to 600 BP, followed by peak lake-level and freshwater conditions. This most recent high lake stand, indicative of a high water table on the surrounding upland, may also have led to the establishment of an extensive cover of Betula in the watershed, possibly in response to paludification. Ostracode assemblages indicate that peak freshwater conditions occurred within the last 100 years. Since historically documented lake-level fluctuations correlate with decadal scale climatic fluctuations in the meteorological record, and late-Holocene hydrologic dynamics correspond to well documented climatic excursions of the Neoglacial and Little Ice Age, Kenosee Lake dynamics offer insight into the susceptibility of the region's water resources to climate change.

Notes: Summary Blood samples were taken weekly from seventeen mature blue fox vixens (average age five years), from late anoestrus until pro-oestrus, and then taken daily. The vixens were sacrificed at various stages of oestrus, and oocytes were collected from ovarian follicles by aspiration, and/or from oviducts by flushing. The structural features of oocyte maturation were related to the time of the luteinizing hormone (LH) peak. On days 1–2 after the LH peak the oocyte nucleus migrated from a central to a peripheral position in the ooplasm and assumed a flattened appearance. The cumulus investment expanded simultaneously and ovulation took place around day 2. On days 2–3 the oocyte nuclear envelope broke down, the nucleoli disappeared, the metaphase of the first meiotic division was reached, the Golgi complexes decreased in size, the perivitelline space enlarged, and all junctional contact between cumulus cell projections and oocyte was disrupted. On days 3–5 the first polar body was extruded, the metaphase of the second meiotic division was reached, and the cumulus cells degenerated. On day 5 the release of cortical granule content was occasionally seen, and from day 6 the oocytes showed signs of degeneration. In a few animals deviant oocyte maturation was noticed.
