Notes: Abstract Induction of Fibronectin (FN) gene expression by platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) isoforms in rat thoracic aortic smooth muscle cells (SMC) was examined. PDGF-BB enhances FN levels in SMC cultures in a time- and concentration-response fashion. PDGF-AA and PDGF-AB show no effect on FN levels. The effects of insulin and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) on PDGF-BB-induced FN levels were examined. No additivity of FN levels is observed between PDGF-BB and insulin and/or IGF-I. Experiments also show that PDGF-BB enhances FN mRNA levels, implying that acquisition of additional FN mRNA units accounts for the increase in FN levels. Induction of FN and FN mRNA levels by PDGF-BB could be one of the initial events in vascular SMC proliferation and extracellular matrix expansion, leading to atherosclerosis and hypertension.

Notes: Abstract This paper deals with the use of finite element for numerically simulating two-dimensional stable crack growth with mode I. A special model called “moving tip node model” is developed for this purpose, in which the node at crack tip is arbitrarily moved within one element's dimension by sequentially relaxing nodal forces thus reducing the discreteness of simulation to the lowest extent and making it closer to the real physical process. A reliable FORTRAN program based upon the incremental theory of plasticity is developed wherein an elastic-plastic finite deformation hybrid finite element is employed. The results obtained for an aluminum center crack plate treated as a linear hardening material are compared with the experimental results provided by [11] and the simulation is shown to be successful on the whole.

Notes: Summary. Interpolation error estimates for a modified 8-node serendipity finite element are derived in both regular and degenerate cases, the latter of which includes the case when the element is of triangular shape. For $u \in W^{3, p}(K)$ defined over a quadrilateral K, the error for the interpolant $\Pi_K u$ is estimated as $|u-\Pi_K u|_{W^{\alpha, p}(K)}\le Ch^{3-\alpha}_K|u|_{W^{3,p}(K)}$ $(\alpha=0, 1)$ , where $1 \le p \le +\infty$ in the regular case and $1\le p 〈 3$ in the degenerate case, respectively. Thus, the obtained error estimate in the degenerate case is of the same quality as in the regular case at least for $1\le p〈3$ . Results for some related elements are also given.

Notes: Abstract The level structure of196Po has been studied using a160Dy(40Ar, 4n) reaction and a recoil-catcher technique to reduce fission. The results showed a sharp drop off in the first (2+) and (4+) energies relative to systematics implying an abrupt increase in the quadrupole collectivity at N=112. In addition, second (2+) and(4+) states were identified at 859 and 1388 keV, respectively, suggesting the discovery of a 4p2h deformed band in Po isotopes which is related to known 2p2h proton bands in several Pb isotopes. A prompt183W(20Ne, 5n@#@) experiment located similar second 2+ and 4+ states at 1039 and 1483 keV in198Po providing corroboration and extended information on the properties of the new Po deformed bands. A measured halflife of 850 (90) ns for the 2491 keV (11−) state in196Po implied collective E3 contributions to the extractedB (@#@ E3; 11−→8+)=27(5) W.u.

Notes: Abstract Autofluorescence spectra in the visible range induced by an argon laser at 476 nm have been measured in vitro from cancerous, atherosclerotic and normal human and animal tissues. The main difference between diseased and normal tissues is seen as changes in the fluorescence around 540 nm and 576 nm in normal tissue. An extended investigation on fluorescence spectra of rat arteries and absorption spectra of human blood samples showed that the spectral difference of diseased tissues is due to reduction of haemoglobin concentration in cancerous and atherosclerotic tissue. The measurements performed using optical fibres showed the possibility of realizing a real-time, local spectral diagnostic for use in laser surgical procedures on atherosclerotic and cancerous lesions in vivo.

Notes: Abstract The limiting processes in the anti-Stokes Raman Laser (ASRL) are investigated in a Tl ASRL system. The detailed mechanisms and dynamics of ASRL action, photoionization, stimulated collision-induced fluorescence, collisional quenching and other radiative processes are determined, showing the competition among these processes for different experimental parameters.

Notes: Abstract Rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata (RCDP) is a lethal autosomal recessive disease correspondingto complementation group 11 (CG 11), the second most common of the thirteen CGs of peroxisomalbiogenesis disorders (PBDs). RCDP is characterized by proximal limb shortening, severely disturbedendochondrial bone formation, and mental retardation, but there is an absence of the neuronal migrationdefect found in the other PBDs. Plasmalogen biosynthesis and phytanic acid oxidation are deficient, butvery long chain fatty acid (VLCFA) oxidation is normal. At the cellular level, RCDP is unique in thatthe biogenesis of most peroxisomal proteins is normal, but a specific subset of at least four, and maybemore, peroxisomal matrix proteins fail to be imported from the cytosol. In this review, we discuss recentadvances in understanding RCDP, most prominently the cloning of the affected gene, PEX7,and identification of PEX7 mutations in RCDP patients. Human PEX7 wasidentified by virtue of its sequence similarity to its Saccharomyces cerevisiae ortholog, whichhad previously been shown to encode Pex7p, an import receptor for type 2 peroxisomal targetingsequences (PTS2). Normal human PEX7 expression rescues the cellular defects in culturedRCDP cells, and cDNA sequence analysis has identified a variety of PEX7 mutations in RCDP patients, including a deletion of 100 nucleotides, probably due to a splice site mutation, and a prevalent nonsensemutation which results in loss of the carboxyterminal 32 amino acids. Identification of RCDP as a PTS2import disorder explains the observation that several, but not all, peroxisomal matrix proteins aremistargeted in this disease; three of the four proteins deficient in RCDP have now been shown to bePTS2-targeted.

Notes: Abstract In order to investigate the predictive value of in vitro MTT assay for directing chemotherapy of breast cancer patients, from 1992 to 1995, 156 advanced breast cancer patients who had evaluable lesions were recruited for a prospective study. Of them 83 had MTT assay before chemotherapthe 73 patients in the MTT sensitive group received chemotherapy according to the result of the MTT assay. The other 10 patients in the MTT resistant group and 73 patients in the control group were given chemotherapy according to clinicians' discretion. The response rate in the MTT sensitive group was 76.7% (56/73). There was statistically significant difference as compared with 0 (0/10) in the MTT resistant group and 43.8% (32/73) in the control group. Between in vitro and in vivo, the overall coincident rate was 79.5%[(56+10)/83]. In the MTT sensitive group, the response rate of the subgroups of lesions and the chemotherapy regiments tended to be higher than that in the control group. Patients in the MTT sensitive group had longer response and survival than those in the control group. However, there was no statistical difference in the median response duration and the median survival between the two groups. Further exploration of in vitro chemosensitivity testing by MTT assay for patients with advanced breast cancer is warranted.

Notes: Abstract To date, no pure bacterial cultures that could degrade acetochlor have been described. In this study, one strain of microorganism capable of degrading acetochlor, designated as LCa2, was isolated from acetochlor-contaminated soil. The strain LCa2 is Pseudomonas oleovorans according to the criteria of Bergey’s manual of determinative bacteriology and sequence analysis of the partial 16S rRNA gene. Optimum growth temperature and pH were 35 °C and 8.0, respectively. The strain could degrade 98.03% of acetochlor treated at a concentration of 7.6 mg l−1 after 7 days of incubation and could tolerate 200 mg l−1 of acetochlor. When the acetochlor concentration became higher, the degradation cycle became longer. The acetochlor biodegradation products were identified by GC–MS based on mass spectral data and fragmentation patterns. The main plausible degradative pathways involved dechlorination, hydroxylation, N-dealkylation, C-dealkylation and dehydrogenation.

Notes: Abstract Water and suspended sediment samples from the Huanghe and its delta region were analyzed to determine arsenic concentrations. Comparison with the data of previous studies and other world pristine and less disturbed rivers reveals high levels of both dissolved and particulate As in this high turbidity river. Relatively stable distribution along the river course and in delta sediment cores shows that antrhopogenic activities have not altered As concentrations by any significant magnitude since the 1940s. Therefore, high levels of As in the Huanghe should be controlled by natural weathering and lithology. In the estuary, biological removal/regeneration and abiotic events (e.g. remobilization) have been identified to cause the active (non-conservative) As distributions. With the limited data set of the present study, the abiotic and biological contributions cannot be assessed accurately, however.
