Notes: Light microscopic studies have shown that nevus cell nests and melanoma nests are surrounded by basement membrane (BM) material containing type IV collagen and laminin. This study confirms this by electron microscopy and relates it to proteins which interact with the basement membrane. Nevi except for dysplastic and Spitz nevi, malignant melanomas, and melanoma metastases were studied by immunohistopathology, routine electron microscopy (EM), and immunoelectron microscopy. The lesions were incubated with monoclonal antibody (moAb) against type IV collagen, laminin, and the integrin α6 and studied by light microscopy. In addition, melanomas were studied by immuno-EM after incubation with a moAb against matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2). Nevus cell nests and melanoma nests are surrounded by BM material containing type IV collagen and laminin by immuno-EM. The BM material various in thickness and is amorphous. Type IV collagen, laminin, and MMP-2 are synthesized by melanoma cells as well as adjacent fibroblasts. Destruction or loss of the BM is not mandatory for melanoma invasion or even metastasis. Possibly the BM material is a protective wall for melanoma cells. Interactions between melanocytes and the extracellular matrix of which the BM is a part, can be traced back to the migration of melanocytes from the neural crest.

Notes: An increasingly common and effective method for the treatment of atherosclerotic disease in the coronary arteries is percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and stenting. The stents are made of different metals. An increased rate of restenosis when using gold-plated stents has been shown. Contact allergy to gold is common in many countries. Recently, a study has shown an increased rate of contact allergy to nickel among patients with restenosis and a nickel-containing stent. The aims of our study were to investigate whether there was an increased rate of contact allergy to gold among patients with gold-plated stents and if this increased the risk of restenosis. 22 patients who had received a gold-plated stent were patch tested. An age- and sex-matched population of 88 patients, previously patch tested because of a suspected contact dermatitis, served as controls. In the stent group, 10/22 (45.5%) had a contact allergy to gold, in the control group 18/88 (20.5%); the difference is statistically significant (P = 0.04). There was no significant difference regarding frequency of restenosis. Our study indicates that there is a risk of sensitizing the patient when implanting a gold-plated stent. Further studies are needed to confirm these results and to evaluate whether there is an increased risk of restenosis.

Notes: Abstract Aurelia aurita medusae are able to catch their prey with their entire body surface. Catch efficiency in medusae caught in Kiel harbour in May 1985 was found to be highest at the tentacles and lowest at the subumbrella. Surface structures of the medusa as well as the cnidom are described by SEM observations. Microbasic heterotrichous euryteles and atrichous isorhizas were found. Discharged nematocysts on the prey's skin indicate different functions of the two types. The villi in the gastral cavity show a characteristic morphological differentiation that consists of a ciliated distal and a basal area covered by vesicles. Four types of glandular cells were identified by TEM observations. Mucous cell types preferably occur in densely ciliated areas. The presence of serous cells is restricted to the basal region of the gastral villi and gastral cavity where the extracellular predigestion takes place. The time of food passage in young medusae of A. aurita decreases from 19 h at 4°C to 4 h at 22°C.

Notes: Abstract The effects of two toxic polypeptides isolated from Anemonia sulcata Pennant (Anthozoa) were tested on Gadus morhua, Pleuronectes platess and Platichthys flesus. In tramuscular injections caused paralysis and death, with symptoms similar to those of death caused by lack of oxygen. In cod, the LD50 dose of Toxin II was 50 times higher chan that of Toxin I (Toxin I=6.9 mg/kg, Toxin II=0.14 mg/kg). Flatfish were less sensitive. The LD50 of Toxin II was 0.37 mg/kg for Platichthys flesus and 0.38 mg/kg for Pleuronectes platessa. Both toxins are less lethal to fishes than to crustaceans.

Notes: Abstract Seasonal occurrence, individual growth and development of population biomass of the scyphomedusa Aurelia aurita were studied in 1978–1979 in the western Baltic Sea. First ephyrae of the developing population appear in November, but the great majority are produced in April and May. On the average 0.09 medusae m-3 with a biomass of 25 g occur between July and September. The standing stock is below 10 mg from December to April. Growth is characterized by a stagnation period in winter and early spring, by rapid increase in early summer and by size reduction in autumn after release of gonadal products. The maximum monthly growth rate was observed in June, when the average diameter increased from 7 to 48 mm and the wet weight from 0.06 to 22.8 g. Mortality is low before maturation. Genetical determination, starvation and parasitization are discussed as causes for morphological reductions and finally for death in autumn.

Notes: Abstract The topography of stereotyped behaviour produced by apomorphine in rats was studied by using either a scoring system, based on observation in a wire cage, or by quantification of horizontal and vertical activities, and of the total distances run in an open field, using an automatic recording system. The latter design was combined with a classification of the type of stereotyped behaviour observed during recording. In addition, the reproducibility of the nature of the stereotyped behaviour and its dose-dependence in individual animals was evaluated. In rats observed in a wire cage, apomorphine at lower doses (0.25 or 0.50 mg/kg SC) produced stereotyped sniffing. Increasing the doses led to stereotyped licking and the largest dose (5.00 mg/kg SC) produced predominantly stereotyped gnawing, as was demonstrated graphically. The type of behaviour produced by 2 mg/kg apomorphine in the open field was reproduced well in individuals after a second administration 4 days later. The shift from sniffing to gnawing was observed in most, but not all of the individually classified animals after administration of the largest dose (5 mg/kg). The locomotor part of motility was highest in “sniffing animals” and lower when gnawing occurred. The non-locomotor part of motility was low in “sniffing rats” and increased when licking and gnawing occurred. In some of the animals a characteristic “climbing” behaviour was observed in addition after the larger doses, which did not interfere with sniffing, licking or gnawing. A combination of classification by observation and automatic recording seems the most appropriate way to study the topography of stereotyped behaviour produced by apomorphine.
