Notes: Abstract Two classes of forced vibration system with both square and cubic nonlinear terms are treated as Hamiltonian integrable systems under small perturbation. The Melnikov's functions are given. Thus the necessary condition for induction of chaos in the systems is obtained.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, Nielsen's form of Gauss's principle for controllable variable-mass systems is established. By this principle, the generalized Nielsen's Equations are extended to controllable variable-mass systems. The equations in terms of quasi-coordinates are obtained. The equivalence between the generalized Nielsen's equations and Appell's equations is demonstrated.

Notes: Abstract The integro-partial-differential equation that governs the dynamical behavior of homogeneous viscoelastic beams was established. The material of the beams obeys the Leaderman nonlinear constitutive relation. In the case of two simply supported ends, the mathematical model is simplified into an integro-differential equation after a 2nd-order truncation by the Galerkin method. Then the equation is further reduced to an ordinary differential equation which is convenient to carry out numerical experiments. Finally, the dynamical behavior of 1 st-order and 2 nd-order truncation are numerically compared.

Notes: Abstract The dynamical stability of a homogeneous, simple supported column, subjected to a periodic axial force, is investigated. The viscoelastic material is assumed to obey the Leaderman nonlinear constitutive relation. The equation of motion was derived as a nonlinear integro-partial-differential equation, and was simplified into a nonlinear integro-differential equation by the Galerkin method. The averaging method was employed to carry out the stability analysis. Numerical results are presented to compare with the analytical ones. Numerical results also indicate that chaotic motion appears.

Notes: Abstract We measured feeding behavior, feeding damage, and larval growth of the crucifer specialist, Plutella xylostella and the generalist, Spodoptera eridania, on the cotyledons of 14 homozygous lines of Brassica juncea differing in myrosinase activity and glucosinolate profiles. The proportion of time feeding and area damaged by P. xylostella were lower on lines with high myrosinase activities [0.49–0.73 nmol glucose released/mg tissue(fresh weight, FW)/min] than on lines with low myrosinase activities [0.20–0.31 nmol glucose released/mg tissue(FW)/min]. In contrast, the proportion of time feeding and area damaged by S. eridania were not related to myrosinase activity, but were lower on cotyledons of lines with high glucosinolate concentrations [6.8–21.3 μg/g(FW)] than on lines with low glucosinolate concentrations [0.09–0.61 μg/g(FW)]. Relative growth rates (RGR) of both insect species were lower on lines with high glucosinolate concentrations, but were not related to myrosinase activity in the lines. In toxicity experiments that used artificial diets, allyl isothiocyanate, but not allyl glucosinolate, was lethally toxic to neonate P. xylostella (LC50s of 1.54 μmol/g, and ≫100 μmol/g, respectively), whereas isothiocyanate and the glucosinolate were lethally toxic to neonate S. eridania (LC50s of 3.42 and 6.73 μmol/g, respectively). We interpret these results to indicate that myrosinase activity might be more important for plant defense against specialist insects that have adaptations to intact glucosinolates, but less important for defense against generalists, which are susceptible to the intact glucosinolates.

Notes: Abstract The control of chaotic oscillations is investigated in this paper. A control methodology, termed input-output linearization, is modified by locally linearizing the nonlinear control law in the small neighborhood of the control goal. Its suitability for controlling chaotic oscillators is analyzed. The forced Duffing oscillator is treated as a numerical example of controlling chaotic motion to a given fixed point and a given period-2 motion. The control signals and time needed to achieve the desired goals of the modified method are compared with those of the original method. The robustness of the control law is demonstrated.

Description: Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has posed a significant threat to both humans and birds, and it has spanned large geographic areas and various ecological systems throughout Asia, Europe and Africa, but especially in mainland China. Great efforts in control and prevention of the disease, including universal vaccination campaigns in poultry and active serological and virological surveillance, have been undertaken in mainland China since the beginning of 2006. In this study, we aim to characterize the spatial and temporal patterns of HPAI H5N1, and identify influencing factors favoring the occurrence of HPAI H5N1 outbreaks in poultry in mainland China. Our study shows that HPAI H5N1 outbreaks took place sporadically after vaccination campaigns in poultry, and mostly occurred in the cold season. The positive tests in routine virological surveillance of HPAI H5N1 virus in chicken, duck, goose as well as environmental samples were mapped to display the potential risk distribution of the virus. Southern China had a higher positive rate than northern China, and positive samples were mostly detected from chickens in the north, while the majority were from duck in the south, and a negative correlation with monthly vaccination rates in domestic poultry was found (R = −0.19, p value = 0.005). Multivariate panel logistic regression identified vaccination rate, interaction between distance to the nearest city and national highway, interaction between distance to the nearest lake and wetland, and density of human population, as well as the autoregressive term in space and time as independent risk factors in the occurrence of HPAI H5N1 outbreaks, based on which a predicted risk map of the disease was derived. Our findings could provide new understanding of the distribution and transmission of HPAI H5N1 in mainland China and could be used to inform targeted surveillance and control efforts in both human and poultry populations to reduce the risk of future infections.

Description: Abundant Jatropha waste is a promising renewable feedstock for the production of sugars and 2,3-butanediol fermentation. To obtain high yield of water-soluble products and high concentration of reducing-sugars, ionic liquid (IL) pretreatment and dilute acid hydrolysis at 150[degree sign]C were combined in this work. The destruction of crystalline structure and increase surface area of biomasses after IL-pretreatment, made their hydrolysis more efficient. Compared with original cellulose, after IL-pretreatment, both the yield and concentration of reducing-sugars increased by 139%, and the water-soluble products yield increased by 128% after hydrolysis. Compared with water-washed Jatropha hulls, after IL-pretreatment, the yield and concentration of reducing-sugars increased by 80% and 76%, respectively, and the water-soluble products yield increased by 70% after hydrolysis. IL-pretreatment benefited the fermentation of Jatropha hull hydrolysate with 66.58% diol yield and its productivity increased from 0.35 to 0.40 g/(L . h).

Description: Remote Sensing, Vol. 9, Pages 795: Refocusing of Moving Targets in SAR Images via Parametric Sparse Representation Remote Sensing doi: 10.3390/rs9080795 Authors: Yichang Chen Gang Li Qun Zhang Jinping Sun In this paper, a parametric sparse representation (PSR) method is proposed for refocusing of moving targets in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. In regular SAR images, moving targets are defocused due to unknown motion parameters. Refocusing of moving targets requires accurate phase compensation of echo data. In the proposed method, the region of interest (ROI) data containing the moving targets are extracted from the complex SAR image and represented in a sparse fashion through a parametric transform, which is related to the phase compensation parameter. By updating the reflectivities of moving target scatterers and the parametric transform in an iterative fashion, the phase compensation parameter can be accurately estimated and the SAR images of moving targets can be refocused well. The proposed method directly operates on small-size defocused ROI data, which helps to reduce the computational burden and suppress the clutter. Compared to other existing ROI-based methods, the proposed method can suppress asymmetric side-lobes and improve the image quality. Both simulated data and real SAR data collected by GF-3 satellite are used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Description: Background: Fine particulate matters with aerodynamic diameters smaller than 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5) have been a critical environmental problem in China due to the rapid road vehicle growth in recent years. To date, most methods available to estimate traffic contributions to ambient PM2.5 concentration are often hampered by the need for collecting data on traffic volume, vehicle type and emission profile. Objective: To develop a simplified and indirect method to estimate the contribution of traffic to PM2.5 concentration in Beijing, China. Methods: Hourly PM2.5 concentration data, daily meteorological data and geographic information were collected at 35 air quality monitoring (AQM) stations in Beijing between 2013 and 2014. Based on the PM2.5 concentrations of different AQM station types, a two-stage method comprising a dispersion model and generalized additive mixed model (GAMM) was developed to estimate separately the traffic and non-traffic contributions to daily PM2.5 concentration. The geographical trend of PM2.5 concentrations was investigated using generalized linear mixed model. The temporal trend of PM2.5 and non-linear relationship between PM2.5 and meteorological conditions were assessed using GAMM. Results: The medians of daily PM2.5 concentrations during 2013–2014 at 35 AQM stations in Beijing ranged from 40 to 92 μg/m3. There was a significant increasing trend of PM2.5 concentration from north to south. The contributions of road traffic to daily PM2.5 concentrations ranged from 17.2% to 37.3% with an average 30%. The greatest contribution was found at AQM stations near busy roads. On average, the contribution of road traffic at urban stations was 14% higher than that at rural stations. Conclusions: Traffic emissions account for a substantial share of daily total PM2.5 concentrations in Beijing. Our two-stage method is a useful and convenient tool in ecological and epidemiological studies to estimate the traffic contribution to PM2.5 concentrations when there is limited information on vehicle number and types and emission profile.
