    Abstract: When reclaimed water was recharged into groundwater containing a low content of ferrous iron, Fe-rich particles were generated and started to transport into the porous medium. X-ray powder diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy analysis showed that the generated Fe-rich particles were in a poorly crystallized ferrihydrite phase. After the formation of ferrihydrite particles, the mass loss of contaminants was calculated, which was 88.2% for Al, 93.3% for Zn, and 41.6% for chemical oxygen demand (COD). Protein-like compounds were predominant in the removed COD. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as a model to investigate the effect of proteins on the transport of ferrihydrite particles in porous medium. Results showed that the attachment efficiency of ferrihydrite particles on the porous medium decreased from 100% to 75% with the increase of BSA concentration from 10 mg/L to 100 mg/L. BSA was attached to the surface of ferrihydrite particles via electrostatic adsorption. Thus, the zeta potential of ferrihydrite particles changed from positive to negative, and the particles became less aggregated, thereby enhancing particle mobility. This observation provided evidence that protein residues in reclaimed water enhance the transport of Fe-rich particles in saturated porous medium.

    Abstract: Waterlogging remains a critical constraint to wheat production in areas with high rainfall. Exogenous application of nitrogen (N) can effectively diminish the adverse effects of waterlogging, but varies with specific events. To provide highly efficient remedial strategies, this pot study investigated the effects of urea application following 10 days of waterlogging initialing at the stem elongation stage (Zadoks growth stage, GS33). The remedial measures included foliar spray of urea solution at a single dose (0.108 g urea per pot) at the 0th day after finishing waterlogging (FU1) and twice at the 0th and 7th day (FU2), and soil surface spray of urea solution at single and double doses when soil water content was approximately 80% of field capacity (SU1 and SU2, respectively). Waterlogging significantly reduced grain yield, total N uptake, and N partial factor productivity (by 11%, 18%, and 11%, respectively), but subsequent remedial measures improved these to variable degrees. Reduction in grain yield owing to waterlogging could be effectively alleviated and even eliminated using these remediations. Grain yield and N partial factor productivity were higher under FU2 and SU2 than FU1 and SU1. Among all treatments, plants under SU2 exhibited the highest total N uptake and top-dressing N recovery. Diminished yield losses were attributed to (1) increased kernel number per spike resulting from increased spikelet fertility and kernel number per spikelet and (2) increased photosynthetic production by delaying senescence (improved chlorophyll content and maintained green leaf area) of the top leaves. This study suggests that urea application for a brief period of time following waterlogging during the stem elongation stage has remarkable remedial effects.

    Abstract: Potential evapotranspiration (PET) is generally estimated using empirical models; thus, how to improve PET estimation accuracy has received widespread attention in recent years. Among all the models, although the temperature-driven Thornthwaite (TH) model is easy to operate, its estimation accuracy is rather limited. Although previous researchers proved that the accuracy of TH-PET can be greatly improved by using a limited number of variables to conduct calibration exercises, only preliminary experiments were conducted. In this study, to refine this innovation practice, we comprehensively investigated the factors that affect the calibration performances, including the selection of variables, seasonal effects, and spatial distribution of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)/weather stations. By analyzing the factors and their effects, the following conclusions have been drawn: (1) an optimal variable selection scheme containing zenith total delay, temperature, pressure, and mean Julian Date was proposed; (2) the most salient improvements are in the winter and summer seasons, with improvement rates over 80%; (3) with the changes in horizontal (2.771–44.723 km) and height (1.239–344.665 m) differences among ten pairs of GNSS/weather stations, there are no obvious differences in the performances. These findings can offer an in-depth understanding of this practice and provide technical references to future applications.

    Abstract: Background: Endometritis is a common reproductive disease in equine animals. No investigation about the bacterial characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of donkeys with endometritis has thus far been reported. Objectives: To determine the common uterine bacterial isolates from donkeys with endometritis and to evaluate their susceptibility to antimicrobials used for the treatment thereof. Study design: Retrospective case-series. Methods: Medical records at an equine clinical diagnostic center were retrospectively reviewed to identify submissions from donkeys with bacterial endometritis between 2018 and 2021. Data were extracted and analyzed descriptively in terms of the frequency of bacterial species, susceptibility to antimicrobials and multidrug resistance. Results: A total of 73 isolates were identified from 30 donkeys, of which 92% of the isolates were Gram-negative bacteria. Mixed cultures were found in 90% of the donkeys. The most common isolates were Escherichiacoli (31.5%) and Acinetobacter spp. (21.9%). Susceptibility testing revealed that amikacin (98%), cefoxitin (95%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (78%) and gentamicin (74%) were the most efficient agents for donkeys. Multidrug resistance (MDR) was found in 20% of all bacterial isolates, of which all Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates showed a multidrug resistance profile. Main limitations: The sample size was relatively small, which means a bias of selection may exist. The antimicrobial resistance and MDR of agents without break points were not calculated, which means the relative results may be underestimated in our study. Conclusions: Severe infections were detected in donkeys with endometritis. Antimicrobial resistance and MDR bacteria are not rare in our study. This study demonstrated that bacteria identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing are highly recommended before the treatment of uterine infections in donkeys. Further studies, including the epidemiological investigation of bacterial endometritis of donkeys, should be conducted to provide a better understanding of this critical problem.

    Abstract: Red mud, a Fe-rich waste generated from the aluminum industry, was recovered as an adsorbent for wastewater treatment. The separation process of red mud from water after adsorption, including centrifugation and filtration, was complicated. This study demonstrated an alternative option to recycle red mud for preparing magnetic adsorbent via a facile hydrothermal route using ascorbic acid as reductant. Red mud is weakly magnetized and consists of andradite, muscovite, hematite, and cancrinite. After hydrothermal treatment, andradite in red mud was reductively dissolved by ascorbic acid, and transformed into magnetite and morimotoite. With increasing hydrothermal temperature, the dissolution of andradite accelerated, and the crystallite size of magnetite increased. When the hydrothermal temperature reached 200 °C, the prepared adsorbent P-200 showed a desirable saturation magnetization of 4.1 Am2/kg, and could be easily magnetically separated from water after adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of P-200 for Zn2+ was 89.6 mg/g, which is eight-fold higher than that of the raw red mud. The adsorption of Zn2+ by P-200 fitted the Langmuir model, where cation exchange was the main adsorption mechanism. The average distribution coefficient of Zn2+ at low ppm level was 16.81 L/g for P-200, higher than those of the red mud (0.3 L/g) and the prepared P-120 (1.48 L/g) and P-270 (5.48 L/g), demonstrating that P-200 had the best adsorption capacity for Zn2+ and can be served as a practical adsorbent for real-world applications. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report the conversion of red mud into a magnetic adsorbent under mild conditions.

    Abstract: To address problems in remote sensing image change detection, this study proposes a method for identifying spurious changes based on an eco-geographical zoning knowledge base and crowdsourced data mining. After preliminary change detection using the super pixel cosegmentation method, eco-geographical zoning is introduced, and the rules of spurious change are collected based on the knowledge of expert interpreters, and from statistics on existing land cover products according to each eco-geographical zone. Uncertain changed patches with a high possibility of spurious change according to the eco-geographical zoning rule were published in the form of a map service on an online platform, and then crowd tagging information on spurious changed patches was collected. The Hyperlink-Induced Topic Search (HITS) algorithm was used to calculate the spurious change degree of changed patches. We selected the northern part of Laos as the experimental area and the Chinese GF-1 Wide Field View (WFV) images for change detection to verify the effectiveness of the method. The results show that the accuracy of change detection improves by 23% after removing the spurious changes. Spurious changes caused by clouds, river water turbidity, spectral differences in cultivated land before and after harvest, and changes in shrubs, grassland, and forest density, can be removed using an eco-geographical zoning knowledge base and crowdsourced data mining methods.

    Abstract: Townships in Southwest China are usually located in mountainous regions, which are abundant in natural and cultural landscape resources. There are additional requirements for the township’s sustainable development in these areas. However, insufficient infrastructures, due to limited resources, constrain the sustainable development of these townships. Sustainable contribution of infrastructure (SCOI) in this study is defined as the performance of infrastructure as a contribution to the coordinated development among economic, social, and environmental dimensions of township’s sustainable development. It is necessary to assess these infrastructures according to SCOI and provide choices for investment to maximize resource utilization. Therefore, an assessing model of SCOI with 26 general indicators was developed, which covers five most urgently needed infrastructures of these townships in Southwest China, including road transport, sewage treatment, waste disposal, water supply, and gas. In this model, quantitative and qualitative methods are combined to acquire different SCOI of each infrastructure. The result of the SCOI would be an important reference for infrastructure investment. A case study of Jiansheng Town, that is located in the Dadukou district of Chongqing, demonstrates the applicability of the model. It shows the assessing model of SCOI is efficient to identify the most valuable infrastructure that is appropriate for investment with the goal of township’s sustainable development. This study can provide insights for infrastructure investment and management in townships or areas.

    Abstract: Freely available satellite imagery improves the research and production of land-cover products at the global scale or over large areas. The integration of land-cover products is a process of combining the advantages or characteristics of several products to generate new products and meet the demand for special needs. This study presents an ontology-based semantic mapping approach for integration land-cover products using hybrid ontology with EAGLE (EIONET Action Group on Land monitoring in Europe) matrix elements as the shared vocabulary, linking and comparing concepts from multiple local ontologies. Ontology mapping based on term, attribute and instance is combined to obtain the semantic similarity between heterogeneous land-cover products and realise the integration on a schema level. Moreover, through the collection and interpretation of ground verification points, the local accuracy of the source product is evaluated using the index Kriging method. Two integration models are developed that combine semantic similarity and local accuracy. Taking NLCD (National Land Cover Database) and FROM-GLC-Seg (Finer Resolution Observation and Monitoring-Global Land Cover-Segmentation) as source products and the second-level class refinement of GlobeLand30 land-cover product as an example, the forest class is subdivided into broad-leaf, coniferous and mixed forest. Results show that the highest accuracies of the second class are 82.6%, 72.0% and 60.0%, respectively, for broad-leaf, coniferous and mixed forest.

    Abstract: The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is an important water source in Asia, and precipitation and evaporation patterns at different geographical and temporal scales play a significant role in managing water resource distribution. Based on quality control data from 87 meteorological stations, this study analyzed the spatial and temporal evolution patterns of precipitation and pan evaporation (Epan) on the TP in 1966–2016 using the Mann–Kendall test, the moving t-test, wavelet analysis, Sen’s slope method, and correlation analysis. The results revealed that the average mean temperature in the TP area increased by about 2.1 °C during the study period, and precipitation steadily increased at an average rate of 8.2 mm/10a, with summer and autumn precipitation making up about 80% of the year. In contrast, Epan showed an overall decreasing trend at a decline rate of 20.8 mm/10a, with spring and summer Epan values making up about 67% of the year. The time series of the precipitation and Epan within the TP region clearly exhibit nonstationary features. Precipitation is more concentrated in the southeast than in the northwest, while Epan is mostly concentrated in the southwest and northeast of the plateau around the Qaidam Basin. The “evaporation paradox” phenomenon was common in the TP region for about 40 years (1960s–1990s) and gradually faded in the 21st century. In addition, we introduced a standardized precipitation evaporation index (SPEI) to investigate the differences and relationships between precipitation and Epan time series over the past 50 years. The findings indicate that the southern Qinghai was dominated by an arid trend, while the central and southeast TP remained wet. Droughts and floods coexist in the eastern Qinghai and southern Tibet areas with high population concentrations, and the risk of both is rising as the inhomogeneity of precipitation distribution in the TP region will increase in the future. This study can be used as a reference for managing water resources and predicting regional drought and flood risk.
