    Abstract: The mammary gland is a crucial tissue for milk synthesis and plays a critical role in the feeding and growth of mammalian offspring. The aim of this study was to use RNA-sequencing (RNA-Seq) technology to provide a transcriptome profile of the ovine mammary gland at the peak of lactation. Small-Tailed Han (STH) sheep (n = 9) and Gansu Alpine Merino (GAM) sheep (n = 9), breeds with phenotypic differences in milk production traits, were selected for the RNA-Seq analysis. This revealed 74 genes that were more highly expressed in the STHs than in the GAMs. Similarly, 143 genes that were expressed at lower levels in the STHs than in the GAMs, were identified. Gene ontogeny (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses revealed that these differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were associated with binding and catalytic activities, hematopoietic cell lineages, oxytocin signaling pathway and neuroactive ligand–receptor interaction. This is the first study of the transcriptome profile of the ovine mammary gland in these Chinese breeds at peak lactation. The results provide for a better understanding of the genetic mechanisms involved in ovine lactation.

    Abstract: Rare earth elements (REEs) in tea are usually determined by the soil, but their transfer characteristics and influencing factors have been rarely studied and reported. In order to determine the transfer and accumulation characteristics of REEs, rock, soil, and tea samples were collected in the Mengku tea region. Levels of 15 REEs (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Y) in samples were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results showed that light rare earth elements (LREEs) were easily enriched in rock, soil, and tea. The average total concentration of REEs in investigated rocks was 199 mg·kg−1, which was lower than the element abundance of China’s continental crust but higher than the standard value of element abundance in the upper continental crust (UCC). The average total REE concentration in the investigated soil was 225 mg·kg−1, which was lower than the background value of soil in Yunnan Province. The chondrite-normalized levels of Ce and Eu in rocks and Eu in soil showed negative anomalies, while Ce levels in soil showed slightly positive anomalies. The total amount of REEs in tea was relatively low and the chondrite-normalized values of Eu in tea showed significantly positive anomalies. Eu anomalies in tea were closely correlated with soil pH (pH 〈 5, negative anomalies; pH 〉 5, positive anomalies). K, Na, Ca, and Mg were the main factors affecting the transfer of REEs. LREEs were mainly enriched in tea through Na+ channels. Mg and K affected the differentiation and enrichment of heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) in tea. Calcium showed a significantly positive correlation with Eu in tea. The human health risk assessment showed that the risk of drinking tea to the human body was far below the reference value. Ce, Y, and La in tea were the main elements that affected non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risk.

    Abstract: Structural resonance increases the vibration and noise of porous acoustic metamaterials while reducing the energy consumption and conversion efficiency of acoustic waves. Therefore, structural fundamental frequency of porous acoustic metamaterials is required to be controlled to avoid resonance. This study proposes a full-cycle interactive progressive (FIP) design scheme for porous acoustic metamaterials. The FIP design scheme first establishes a specific parameter relationship for the initial model based on the intentions of the designers. The initial model is then dynamically adjusted through a series of optimization processes. In particular, the FIP design scheme is developed for a porous acoustic metamaterial in an acoustic-structure interaction system. The effects of the structural parameters and applied boundary conditions of the porous acoustic metamaterial on the structural fundamental frequency are investigated. A surrogate model is introduced to reduce the calculation costs and improve the design efficiency of the parametric optimization. The frequency-modulation acoustic metamaterial is tailored to improve its acoustic and vibrational characteristics, including the resonance resistance and low dynamic response. The features of the FIP design scheme in the optimized design of porous acoustic metamaterials are demonstrated.

    Abstract: Aeruginosins, a family of nonribosomal linear tetrapeptides discovered from cyanobacteria and sponges, exhibit in vitro inhibitory activity on various types of serine proteases. This family is characterized by the existence of the 2-carboxy-6-hydroxy-octahydroindole (Choi) moiety occupied at the central position of the tetrapeptide. Aeruginosins have attracted much attention due to their special structures and unique bioactivities. Although many studies on aeruginosins have been published, there has not yet been a comprehensive review that summarizes the diverse research ranging from biogenesis, structural characterization and biosynthesis to bioactivity. In this review, we provide an overview of the source, chemical structure as well as spectrum of bioactivities of aeruginosins. Furthermore, possible opportunities for future research and development of aeruginosins were discussed.

    Abstract: The keratin-associated proteins (KAPs) are constituents of cashmere fibers and variation in many KAP genes (KRTAPs) has been found to be associated with fiber traits. The gene encoding the high-sulphur KAP28-1 has been described in sheep, but it has not been identified in the goat genome. In this study, a 255-bp open reading frame on goat chromosome 1 was identified using a search of similar sequence to ovine KRTAP28-1, and that would if transcribed and translated encode a high sulphur KAP. Based on the analysis of polymerase chain reaction amplicons for the goat nucleotide sequences in 385 Longdong cashmere goats in China, five unique banding patterns were detected using single strand conformation polymorphism analysis. These represented five DNA sequences (named variants A to E) and they had the highest resemblance to KRTAP28-1 sequences from sheep, suggesting A–E are variants of caprine KRTAP28-1. DNA sequencing revealed a 2 or 4-bp deletion and eleven nucleotide sequence differences, including four non-synonymous substitutions. Of the four common variants (A, B, C and D) found in these goats, the presence of variant A was associated with decreased mean fiber diameter and this effect appeared to be additive. These results indicate that caprine KRTAP28-1 variation might have value as a molecular marker for reducing cashmere mean fiber diameter.

    Abstract: In this work, polyacrylonitrile/aminated polymeric nanosphere (PAN/APN) nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning of monodispersed aminated polymeric nanospheres (APNs) for removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. Characterization results showed that obtained PAN/APNs possessed nitrogen functionalization. Furthermore, the adsorption application results indicated that PAN/APN nanofibers exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 556 mg/g at 298 K for Cr(VI) removal. The kinetic data showed that the adsorption process fits the pseudo-second order. A thermodynamic study revealed that the adsorption of Cr(VI) was spontaneous and endothermic. The coexisting ions Na+, Ca2+, K+, Cl−, NO3− and PO43− had little influence on Cr(VI) adsorption, while SO42− in solution dramatically decreased the removal performance. In the investigation of the removal mechanism, relative results indicated that the adsorption behavior possibly involved electrostatic adsorption, redox reaction and chelation. PAN/APN nanofibers can detoxify Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and subsequently chelate Cr(III) on its surface. The unique structure and nitrogen functionalization of PAN/APN nanofibers make them novel and prospective candidates in heavy metal removal.

    Abstract: Effects of a high proportion of concentrate in the diet on the ileal microbiota and metabolites in small ruminants are rarely reported. This study was designed to investigate the ileal microbiota and its relationship with host metabolic function in goats and aimed to elucidate the mechanisms involving in the ileal adaptation to a diet containing a high proportion of rice. Sixteen goats were equally divided into two groups and fed a diet with a normal concentrate proportion (NC, 55% concentrate) or a high-concentrate diet (HC, 90% concentrate). Results showed that the HC diet decreased bacterial diversity and elevated the abundance of five genera (Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Eubacterium_nodatum_group, Ruminococcus_gauvreauii_group, Eubacterium_coprostanoligenes_group and Ruminococcus 1), but reduced the number of Anaerotruncus. Microbial functional potentials indicated that the HC diet activated the pathways related to metabolism of carbohydrate, glycan, lipid and vitamins, but inhibited the pathways associated with cell motility and signal transduction. The activities of amylase and alkaline phosphatase were greater (p 〈 0.05) in the intestinal digesta of the HC-fed goats. However, there were no differences in the villus height, crypt depth and the ratio of villus height to crypt depth in the ileum between the two groups. These results indicate that the HC diet alters the bacterial community and pathways related to the metabolism of dietary nutrients and cell motility and signal transduction of bacteria in the ileum of goats.

    Abstract: A convenient bipolar-electrode (BPE) electrochemical method was engineered to produce molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) quantum dots (QDs) using pure phosphate buffer (PBS) as the electrolyte and the MoS2 powder as the precursor. Meanwhile, the corresponding by-product precipitate was studied, in which MoS2 nanosheets were observed. The BPE design would not be restricted by the shape and size of the MoS2 precursor. It could lead to the defect generation and 2H → 1T phase variation of the MoS2, resulting in the formation of nanosheets and finally the QDs. The as-prepared MoS2 QDs exhibited high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 13.9% and average lateral size of 4.4 ± 0.2 nm, respectively. Their excellent PL property, low cytotoxicity, and good aqueous dispersion offer promising applicability in PL staining and cell imaging. Meanwhile, the as-obtained byproduct containing the nanosheets could be used as an effective electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorber. The minimum reflection loss (RL) value was −54.13 dB at the thickness of 3.3 mm. The corresponding bandwidth with efficient attenuation ( 〈 −10 dB) was up to 7.04 GHz (8.8–15.84 GHz). The as-obtained EMW performance was far superior over most previously reported MoS2-based nanomaterials.

    Abstract: The keratin-associated proteins (KAPs) are structural components of cashmere fibres. The gene encoding the high-sulphur (HS)-KAP24-1 (KRTAP24-1) has been identified in humans and sheep, but it has not been described in goats. In this study, we report the identification of caprine KRTAP24-1, describe variation in this gene, and investigate the effect of this variation on cashmere traits. A search for sequences orthologous to the ovine gene in the goat genome revealed a 774 bp open reading frame on chromosome 1, which could encode an HS-KAP. Based on this goat genome sequence and comparison with ovine KRTAP24-1 sequences, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers were designed to amplify an 856 bp fragment that would contain the entire coding region of the putative caprine KRTAP24-1. Use of this PCR amplification with subsequent single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis of the amplicons identified four distinct patterns of DNA bands on gel electrophoresis, with these representing four different DNA sequences (A to D), in 340 Longdong cashmere goats reared in China. The variant sequences had the highest similarity to KRTAP24-1 sequences from sheep and humans, suggesting that they are variants of caprine KRTAP24-1. Nine single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected in the gene, including four non-synonymous SNPs and an SNP in proximity to the ATG start codon. Of the three common genotypes (AA, AB, and BB) found in these Longdong cashmere goats, cashmere fibres from goats of genotype AA had lower mean fibre diameter (MFD) than did those of genotype AB, and cashmere fibres from goats of genotype AB had lower MFD than did those from goats of genotype BB.
