    Abstract: Vitamin A, a fat-soluble essential vitamin, is implicated in a large range of physiological processes. Up to now, the associations between vitamin A and metabolic syndrome (MetS) or other metabolic risk factors are controversial in children and adolescents. Thus, we aimed to dig into the relationship of vitamin A with MetS and many other metabolic risk factors. This was a cross-sectional study derived from the China National Nutrition and Health Surveillance of Children and Lactating Mothers. A total of 3025 school-aged (7–17 years) children and adolescents were selected by applying multistage stratified cluster random sampling methods in the Jiangsu Province of eastern China. Through enquiry survey, anthropometric measurement and laboratory examination, relevant information and blood biochemical indexes of the participants were collected in this study. MetS was identified according to the modified criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program–Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III). Multivariate logistic analysis and the generalized additive model (GAM) were used to analyze the relationship between vitamin A and various metabolic risk factors. The overweight, obesity and MetS prevalence of children and adolescents in this study was 14.0%, 11.9% and 5.1%, respectively. The risk of prevalent MetS, general obesity, high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high total cholesterol (TC) and hyperuricemia increased with vitamin A in a dose-dependent way. Logistic regression analysis showed that serum vitamin A Z scores were positively associated with MetS and central obesity, elevated blood pressure (BP) and elevated triglyceride (TG). Sex stratification analysis showed that both in male and female participants, the risk of prevalent MetS, general obesity, high LDL, high TC and hyperuricemia still increased with vitamin A levels. MetS was at a high prevalence level in children and adolescents in Jiangsu that were 7–17 years old. Vitamin A was positively associated with obesity, MetS, dyslipidemia and hyperuricemia. More public health measures and new visions should focus on the effects of retinol on children and adolescents.

    Abstract: A high-performance gel permeation chromatography fluorescence detection (HPGPC-FD) method combined with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) labeling was established for the microanalysis of L. barbarum polysaccharides (LBP). The calibration curves linear over the range of 0.2–20 µg/mL in rat plasma, and 0.25–500 μg/mL in urine and feces samples with correlation coefficients greater than 0.99. The inter-day and intra-day precisions (RSD, %) of the method were under 15% with the relative recovery ranging from 84.6% to 104.0% and the RSD ranging from 0.47% to 7.28%. The concentration–time curve of LBP-FITC in plasma following intragastric administration at 100, 50 and 25 mg/kg well fitted to a nonlinear model. LBP-FITC slowly eliminated from plasma according to the long half-lives (t1/2 = 31.39, 38.09, and 45.76 h, respectively) and mean retention times (MRT0–t = 18.38, 19.15 and 20.07 h, respectively; AUC0–∞ = 230.49, 236.18 and 242.57 h, respectively) after administration of LBP-FITC at doses of 100, 50, and 25 mg/kg, respectively. After intragastric administration at 50 mg/kg for 72 h, the concentration of LBP-FITC in urine and feces was 0.09 ± 0.04% and 92.18 ± 3.61% respectively; the excretion rate of urine was the highest in 0–4 h period and decreased continuously in 4–24 h period. The excretion rate of feces was the highest in 4–10 h, 48.28 ± 9.349% in feces within 4–10 h, and decreased rapidly in 10–24 h. The present study showed that LBP was absorbed as its prototype and most proportion of LBP was excreted from feces, indicating a long time remaining in intestine.

    Abstract: Since the effects of mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) on lipid profile are still controversial, a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted in the present study to assess the effect of MUFA-rich food on lipid profiles. The study was designed, conducted, and reported according to the guidelines of the 2020 preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) statement. A systematic and comprehensive search was performed in several databases from inception up to 30 January 2022. The results showed that the intake of edible oil-derived MUFA (EDM) could increase the blood HDL-C level (mean difference = 0.08; 95%CI: −0.01, 0.17, p = 0.03), but did not affect the level of TC, TG, or LDL-C. Moreover, the consumption of other food-derived MUFA (ODM) significantly decreased TG concentration (mean difference = −0.35; 95%CI: −0.61, −0.09, p = 0.01)), but did not affect the level of TC, LDL-C, or HDL-C. Findings from this study suggest that MUFA-rich food might be beneficial to modulate the blood lipid profile.

    Abstract: We aimed to identify multiple nutritional health problems and the relevant factors among children and adolescents aged 7–17 years. This study was part of the China Nutrition and Health Surveillance of Children and Lactating Mothers in 2016–2017, conducted in Jiangsu Province in eastern China. After sampling, 3025 school-age children and adolescents were enrolled into this study. Demographic information collections and anthropometric measurements were conducted by trained local Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) staff. Venous blood in the amount of 6 mL was drawn from each participant in the morning and used for testing biochemical and nutritional indicators. Multivariate logistic regression analysis and Poisson regression analysis were used for overnutrition- and undernutrition-related disorders to test relevant personal, parental, and household factors. The prevalence of wasting, overweight, and obesity was 5.5%, 14.8%, and 12.7%, respectively. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) was prevalent among 5.1% of participants. Among the study participants, 29.5% had hyperuricemia. The overall prevalence of high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high total cholesterol (TC) of all participants was 4.8% and 7.4%, respectively. 0.9% of the participants had vitamin A deficiency (VAD) and 14.6% had marginal vitamin A deficiency; 25.1% had vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and 54.5% had inadequate vitamin D levels. Anemia was present in 4.0% of all participants. The prevalence of zinc deficiency was 4.8%. Demographic characteristics, behavioral characteristics, parents’ characteristics, and family characteristics were associated with these multiple malnutrition disorders. The double burdens of malnutrition, which includes overnutrition- and undernutrition-related diseases, were prevalent among the school-age children and adolescents in Jiangsu Province in eastern China. There were various factors related to different nutritional problems. Thus, health education focusing on behavior intervention and nutrition education are necessary in containing nutritional problems among children.

    Abstract: Bioactive compounds provide new insights into the prevention and treatment of obesity. Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP), a biological macromolecule extracted from Goji berry, has displayed potential for regulating lipid metabolism. However, the relationship between gut microbiota regulation and lipid metabolism is not entirely clear. In the present study, 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg LBP were intragastrically administered to C57BL/6J male mice fed with a high-fat diet simultaneously lasting for twelve weeks. The results showed that 150 mg/kg LBP showed significant results and all doses of LBP feeding (50, 100, 150 mg/kg) remarkably decreased both serum and liver total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels. Treatment of 150 mg/kg LBP seems to be more effective in weight loss, lowering free fatty acid (FFA) levels in serum and liver tissues of mice. LBP feeding increased the gene expression of adiponectin and decreased the gene expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ, Cluster of Differentiation 36, acetyl-coA carboxylase, and fatty acid synthase in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, the 16s rDNA Sequencing analysis showed that 150 mg/kg LBP feeding may significantly increase the richness of gut microbiota by up-regulation of the ACE and Chao1 index and altered β-diversity among groups. Treatment of 150 mg/kg LBP feeding significantly regulated the microbial distribution by decreasing the relative abundance of Firmicutes and increasing the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes at the phylum level. Furthermore, the relative abundance of Faecalibaculum, Pantoea, and uncultured_bacterium_f_Muribaculaceae at the genus level was significantly affected by LBP feeding. A significant correlation was observed between body weight, TC, TG, FFA and bile acid and phyla at the genus level. The above results indicate that LBP plays a vital role in preventing obesity by co-regulating lipid metabolism and gut microbiota, but its effects vary with the dose.

    Abstract: Hypertension is the most common chronic disease and the primary risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Prehypertension is closely related to a variety of cardiovascular disease risk factors during the development of hypertension. The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between dietary patterns and hypertension in Jiangsu Province. Specifically, we included the participants from 2007 and then followed up in 2014 in the Jiangsu Province of China and collected information from food frequency questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and disease self-reports. A total of 1762 women and men were included in the final analysis. We extracted four dietary patterns using factor analysis, calculated the pattern-specific factor scores, and divided the scores into quartiles, which increased from Q1 to Q4. Compared with participants in Q1, an increased risk of high diastolic blood pressure was found in Q4 of the snack dietary pattern. Additionally, participants in Q2–Q4 of the frugal dietary pattern were found to have a positive association with abnormal blood pressure. However, the results found in the frugal dietary pattern vanished after adjusting more confounders in Q4 of high systolic blood pressure. We found that some food items were associated with hypertension and prehypertension. The overconsumption of salt and alcohol are risk factors for both prehypertension and hypertension. Added sugar and saturated fatty acids are risk factors for hypertension, which may provide suggestions for the residents in China to change dietary habits to prevent prehypertension and hypertension.
