Abstract: Titania is a white pigment used widely in papermaking, paints and cosmetic industries. Dispersion and stabilization of high concentration titania in water-based system remains a great bottleneck in industry nowadays, because aggregation of titania nanoparticles results in severe adverse effects to gloss, opacity, tint strength, color distribution and storage stability of end products. Because kappa-carrageenan (κ-CG) has excellent rheological properties such as emulsification, gelation, stability and so on, it has the ability to form gel and increase the viscosity of aqueous solution. In this work, Octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) starch was utilized as wall material to encapsulate titania pigments using electrostatic spray drying processing. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that titania pigments were coated by OSA starch, with a final form of nanoparticle. Accelerating stability test found that around 60% OSA starch–titania particles were stably dispersed in κ-CG-based solution. All materials used in this work were natural ingredient, which would be preferred by cosmetic industry and consumers. The technique used in the present study could potentially be extended to other pigments for similar purpose.

Abstract: Transmission compliance and hysteresis behaviors are associated with harmonic drives. The experimental observation of a harmonic drive showed that these behaviors are significantly degraded with increasing service time, and their accurate modeling is expected to improve the performance of the control system of harmonic drive-based devices such as robot manipulators. In this paper, a new model is proposed to capture transmission compliance and hysteresis and their degradation. The phenomenon is represented through a combination of the nonlinear stiffness component and the micro-sliding friction in the tooth engagement area. The proposed model considered the multi-tooth meshing and the interference effects of the reducer. The parameters of the model were identified using optimization techniques. Numerical simulations and experimental data using a specialized harmonic drive test device were compared to demonstrate the proposed model.

Abstract: O-GlcNAcylation is an important post-translational modification (PTM) jointly controlled by O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) and O-GlcNAcase (OGA). Aberrant hyper-O-GlcNAcylation is reported to yield hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) malignancy, but the underlying mechanisms of the OGT/OGA imbalance responsible for HCC tumorigenesis remain largely unknown. Here, we report that RAN-binding protein 2 (RANBP2), one of the small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) E3 ligases, contributed to malignant phenotypes in HCC. RANBP2 was found to facilitate CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein alpha (CEBPα) SUMOylation and degradation by direct interplay with CEBPα. As a transcriptional factor, CEBPα was verified to augment OGA transcription, and further experiments demonstrated that RANBP2 enhanced the O-GlcNAc level by downregulating OGA transcription while not affecting OGT expression. Importantly, we provided in vitro and in vivo evidence of HCC malignant phenotypes that RANBP2 triggered through an imbalance of OGT/OGA and subsequent higher O-GlcNAcylation events for oncogenic proteins such as peroxisome proliferative-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1 alpha (PGC1α) in a CEBPα-dependent manner. Altogether, our results show a novel molecular mechanism whereby RANBP2 regulates its function through CEBPα-dependent OGA downregulation to induce a global change in the hyper-O-GlcNAcylation of genes, such as PGC1α, encouraging the further study of promising implications for HCC therapy.

Abstract: This study designed two levels of quantitative fertilizer distribution to investigate precision fertilization applications in orchards in South Xinjiang, China, which have vast rows and narrow plant spaces. The machine comprised a base frame, a ditching device, a fertilizing apparatus and an earth-covering device. The design parameters of the flow stabilization screw, conveyor screw and single-ring fertilizer quantity were summarised using theoretical analysis. The single-ring fertilizer quantity of the conveyor screw was verified via an experiment by combining EDEM software. Three-factor and three-level Box–Behnken tests were conducted using the spiral rotation speed of the conveyor, advancing of the speed and the opening degree of fertilizer outlet as the test factors and using the coefficient of variation (CV) of uniformity as the test index—thus obtaining the optimal working parameters. The simulation test results revealed that the single-ring fertilizer quantity of the fertilizing apparatus was 145.6 g, fulfilling the design requirements. The prototype testing results showed that the CV of uniformity was 6.521% when the spiral rotation speed of the conveyor, the opening degree of the fertilizer outlet and the advancing speed were 66 RPM, 42% and 2.7 km/h—thus meeting the needs of precision fertilization operations. The two designed levels of the quantitative fertilizer distributors were applied to fertilization processes in orchards with wide-row spaces and narrow plant spaces in South Xinjiang, China and were able to effectively carry out the precision fertilization applications. These data could also provide references for the optimization of spiral quantitative fertilizer distributors.

Abstract: In most of the realistic measurement device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) systems, efficient, real-time feedback controls are required to maintain system stability when facing disturbance from either external environment or imperfect internal components. Traditionally, people either use a “scanning-and-transmitting” program or insert an extra device to make a phase reference frame calibration for a stable high-visibility interference, resulting in higher system complexity and lower transmission efficiency. In this work, we build a machine learning-assisted MDI-QKD system, where a machine learning model—the long short-term memory (LSTM) network—is for the first time to apply onto the MDI-QKD system for reference frame calibrations. In this machine learning-assisted MDI-QKD system, one can predict out the phase drift between the two users in advance, and actively perform real-time phase compensations, dramatically increasing the key transmission efficiency. Furthermore, we carry out corresponding experimental demonstration over 100 km and 250 km commercial standard single-mode fibers, verifying the effectiveness of the approach.

Abstract: Forest tree species information plays an important role in ecology and forest management, and deep learning has been used widely for remote sensing image classification in recent years. However, forest tree species classification using remote sensing images is still a difficult task. Since there is no benchmark dataset for forest tree species, a forest tree species dataset (FTSD) was built in this paper to fill the gap based on the Sentinel-2 images. The FTSD contained nine kinds of forest tree species in Qingyuan County with 8,815 images, each with a resolution of 64 × 64 pixels. The images were produced by combining forest management inventory data and Sentinel-2 images, which were acquired with less than 20% clouds from 1 April to 31 October, including the years 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. Then, the images were preprocessed and downloaded from Google Earth Engine (GEE). Four different band combinations were compared in the paper. Moreover, a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) were also calculated using the GEE. Deep learning algorithms including DenseNet, EfficientNet, MobileNet, ResNet, and ShuffleNet were trained and validated in the FTSD. RGB images with red, green, and blue (PC1, PC2, and NDVI) obtained the highest validation accuracy in four band combinations. ResNet obtained the highest validation accuracy in all algorithms after 500 epochs were trained in the FTSD, which reached 84.91%. As a famous and widely used remote sensing classification satellite imagery dataset, NWPU RESISC-45 was also trained and validated in the paper. ResNet achieved a high validation accuracy of 87.90% after training 100 epochs in NWPU RESISC-45. The paper shows in forest tree species classification based on remote sensing images and deep learning that (1) PCA and NDVI can be combined to improve the accuracy of classification; (2) ResNet is more suitable than other deep learning algorithms including DenseNet, EfficientNet, MobileNet, and ShuffleNet in remote sensing classification; and (3) being too shallow or deep in ResNet does not perform better in the FTSD, that is, 50 layers are better than 34 and 101 layers.

Abstract: Two strains, 81s02T and 334s03T, were isolated from the sediment core near the hydrothermal field of southern Okinawa Trough. The cells of both strains were observed to be rod-shaped, non-gliding, Gram-staining negative, yellow-pigmented, facultatively anaerobic, catalase and oxidase positive, and showing optimum growth at 30 °C and pH 7.5. The strains 81s02T and 334s03T were able to tolerate up to 10% and 9% (w/v) NaCl concentration, respectively. Based on phylogenomic analysis, the average nucleotide identity (ANI) and the digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between the two strains and the nearest phylogenetic neighbors of the genus Muricauda were in range of 78.0–86.3% and 21.5–33.9%, respectively. The strains 81s02T and 334s03T shared 98.1% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to each other but were identified as two distinct species based on 81.4–81.5% ANIb, 85.5–85.6% ANIm and 25.4% dDDH values calculated using whole genome sequences. The strains 81s02T and 334s03T shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to M. lutimaris SMK-108T (98.7%) and M. aurea BC31-1-A7T (98.8%), respectively. The major fatty acid of strains 81s02T and 334s03T were identified similarly as iso-C15:0, iso-C17:0 3-OH and iso-C15:1 G, and the major polar lipids of the both strains consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine and two unidentified lipids. The strains contained MK-6 as their predominant menaquinone. The genomic G+C contents of strains 81s02T and 334s03T were determined to be 41.6 and 41.9 mol%, respectively. Based on the phylogenetic and phenotypic characteristics, both strains are considered to represent two novel species of the genus Muricauda, and the names Muricauda okinawensis sp. nov. and Muricauda yonaguniensis sp. nov. are proposed for strains 81s02T (=KCTC 92889T = MCCC 1K08502T) and 334s03T (=KCTC 92890T = MCCC 1K08503T).

Abstract: A novel AlGaN/GaN high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) with a high gate and a multi-recessed buffer (HGMRB) for high-energy-efficiency applications is proposed, and the mechanism of the device is investigated using technology computer aided design (TCAD) Sentaurus and advanced design system (ADS) simulations. The gate of the new structure is 5 nm higher than the barrier layer, and the buffer layer has two recessed regions in the buffer layer. The TCAD simulation results show that the maximum drain saturation current and transconductance of the HGMRB HEMT decreases slightly, but the breakdown voltage increases by 16.7%, while the gate-to-source capacitance decreases by 17%. The new structure has a better gain than the conventional HEMT. In radio frequency (RF) simulation, the results show that the HGMRB HEMT has 90.8%, 89.3%, and 84.4% power-added efficiency (PAE) at 600 MHz, 1.2 GHz, and 2.4 GHz, respectively, which ensures a large output power density. Overall, the results show that the HGMRB HEMT is a better prospect for high energy efficiency than the conventional HEMT.

Abstract: A 4H-SiC metal semiconductor field effect transistor (MESFET) with layered doping and undoped space regions (LDUS-MESFET) is proposed and simulated by ADS and ISE-TCAD software in this paper. The structure (LDUS-MESFET) introduced layered doping under the lower gate of the channel, while optimizing the thickness of the undoped region. Compared with the double-recessed 4H-SiC MESFET with partly undoped space region (DRUS-MESFET), the power added efficiency of the LDUS-MESFET is increased by 85.8%, and the saturation current is increased by 27.4%. Although the breakdown voltage of the device has decreased, the decrease is within an acceptable range. Meanwhile, the LDUS-MESFET has a smaller gate-source capacitance and a large transconductance. Therefore, the LDUS-MESFET can better balance DC and AC characteristics and improve power added efficiency (PAE).
