Abstract: The poor surface performance of titanium alloys substantially limits their application in many fields, such as the petrochemical industry. To overcome this weakness, the Cu and Ni double layers were deposited on the surface of TC4 alloy by the electroplating method, and the isothermal diffusion process was performed at 700 °C to enhance the binding ability between Cu and Ni layers. The isothermal diffusion behavior and microstructure of the coating were systematically analyzed, and tribological property and corrosion resistance of the coating were also evaluated to reveal the influence of isothermal diffusion on the surface performance. It was shown that multiple diffusion layers appeared on the Cu/Ni and Ni/Ti interface, and that NixTiy and CuxTiy phases were formed in the coating with the increase of diffusion time. More importantly, Kirkendall diffusion occurred when the diffusion time increased, which led to the formation of continuous microvoids and cracks in the diffusion layer, weakening the surface performance of the Cu/Ni coatings. This paper unveils the relationship between the microstructure of the Cu/Ni coatings and isothermal diffusion behavior, providing guidelines in preparing high performance surface coatings.

Abstract: This paper focuses on improving fire suppression performance through the use of compressed-air launching technology. A launch dynamics calculation model of a compressed-air launcher is presented, developed using VC++ programming, to simulate the acceleration process of a fire-extinguishing bomb in a barrel. By analyzing the influences of various structural and initial parameters on interior ballistics variations, the effectiveness of the calculation model and program in accurately simulating the launching process is demonstrated. The calculation results indicate that the bore pressure follows a similar trend to that of traditional gunpowder launching. Additionally, it is found that specific structural parameters, such as nozzle diameter and gas cylinder volume, have a direct impact on interior ballistics variations. Notably, the nozzle diameter positively affects the peak pressure, muzzle velocity, gas transfer efficiency, and launch efficiency. To ensure an optimal launch effect and efficiency, the nozzle diameter should be selected to be more than half of the launcher caliber. Similarly, the gas cylinder volume positively influences the peak pressure and muzzle velocity while negatively affecting the gas transfer efficiency and launch efficiency. Furthermore, the initial pressure in the gas cylinder exhibits a positive linear relationship with both the peak pressure and muzzle velocity but a negative linear relationship with the gas transfer efficiency and launch efficiency. The loading position minimally impacts the peak pressure and muzzle velocity but slightly enhances the gas transfer efficiency and launch efficiency. Finally, it is observed that launch angles do not affect the interior ballistic process. The research findings provide valuable theoretical guidance for determining the working parameters of compressed-air accelerated fire-extinguishing bombs.

Abstract: Contamination of antibiotics in an aqueous environment has attracted wide attention. Developing high-efficiency adsorbents for antibiotics removal is urgent. In this work, two kinds of ternary transition metal chalcogenides—Cu2MoS4 and FeMoS4 with superior adsorption performance were prepared by a facile hydrothermal synthesis method. The microstructure and physicochemical properties of the adsorbents were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The as-prepared Cu2MoS4 and FeMoS4 were found to have dramatic potential for the adsorption of chlortetracycline (CTC) in an aqueous solution with an extremely high adsorption capacity. The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of Cu2MoS4 and FeMoS4 to CTC can reach 1203.81 and 2169.19 mg/g, respectively, which goes far beyond the common adsorbents as reported. Moreover, the adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics as well as adsorption mechanism were examined in detail by a batch of adsorption experiments.

Abstract: Point-of-care (POC) molecular diagnostics play a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. It is necessary to develop portable, easy-to-use, inexpensive and rapid molecular diagnostic tools. In this study, we proposed a lab-on-a-chip device that integrated DNA extraction, solid-phase PCR and genotyping detection. The ingenious design of the pneumatic microvalves enabled the fluid mixing and reagent storage to be organically combined, significantly reducing the size of the chip. The solid oligonucleotide array incorporated into the chip allowed the spatial separation of the primers and minimized undesirable interactions in multiplex amplification. As a proof-of-concept for POC molecular diagnostics on the device, five genotypes of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) (HPV16/HPV18/HPV31/HPV33/HPV58) were examined. Positive quality control samples and HPV patient cervical swab specimens were analyzed on the integrated microdevice. The platform was capable of detection approximately 50 copies of HPV virus per reaction during a single step, including DNA extraction, solid-phase PCR and genotype detection, in 1 h from samples being added to the chip. This simple and inexpensive microdevice provided great utility for the screening and monitoring of HPV genotypes. The sample-to-result platform will pave the way for wider application of POC molecular testing in the fields of clinical diagnostics, food safety, and environmental monitoring.

Abstract: The outbreak of Zika virus (ZIKV) has posed a great challenge to public health in recent years. To address the urgent need of ZIKV RNA assays, we integrate the microfluidic chip embedded with chitosan-modified silicon dioxide capillaries, smartphone-based detection unit to be a C3-system for the rapid extraction and detection of ZIKV RNA. The C3-system is characterized by: (1) four chitosan-modified silicon dioxide capillaries integrated in the microfluidic chip for target ZIKV RNA enrichment and “in situ PCR” (polymerase chain reaction) amplification; (2) smartphone-based point of care (POC) device consisting of a pneumatic subsystem for controlling the nucleic acid extraction processes in the microfluidic chip, a heating subsystem for sample lysis and PCR amplification, and an optical subsystem for signal acquisition. The entire detection processes including sample lysis, ZIKV RNA enrichment, and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is achieved in the microfluidic chip. Moreover, PCR buffers can be directly loaded into the chitosan-modified silicon dioxide capillaries for “in situ PCR”, in which the captured ZIKV RNA is directly used for downstream PCR without any loss. ZIKV RNA extracted by the C3-system can be successfully recovered at very low concentrations of 50 transducing units (TU)/mL from crude human saliva. This means that our method of detecting viremia in patients infected with ZIKV is reliable.

Abstract: Nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma (NFPA) is one of the most common types of pituitary adenoma. The marine anthraquinone derivative SZ-685C has been isolated from the secondary metabolites of the mangrove endophytic fungus Halorosellinia sp. (No. 1403) which is found in the South China Sea. Recent research has shown that SZ-685C possesses anticancer and tumor suppressive effects. The tetrazolium-based colorimetric assay (MTT assay) to investigate the different effect of the marine compound SZ-685C on the proliferation of primary human NFPA cells, rat normal pituitary cells (RPCs) and rat prolactinoma MMQ cell lines. Hoechst 33342 dye/propidium iodide (PI) double staining and fluorescein isothiocyanate-conjugated Annexin V/PI (Annexin V-FITC/PI) apoptosis assays detected an enhanced rate of apoptosis in cells treated with SZ-685C. Enhanced expression levels of caspase 3 and phosphate and tensin homolog (PTEN) were determined by Western blotting. Notably, the protein expression levels of Akt were decreased when the primary human NFPA cells were treated with SZ-685C. Here, we show that SZ-685C induces apoptosis of human NFPA cells through inhibition of the Akt pathway in vitro. The understanding of apoptosis has provided the basis for novel targeted therapies that can induce death in cancer cells or sensitize them to established cytotoxic agents and radiation therapy.

Abstract: Fusarium solani is one of the most ruinous soil-borne pathogens and seriously affects crop yields and quality worldwide. Ginger is an important medicinal crop, and ginger rhizome extract (GRE) has been used as an alternative for chemical fungicides and bactericides. We investigated the fungistatic effect of GRE on F. solani and analyzed the chemical constituents of GRE using UPLC-MS/MS. Antifungal assay results showed that 20 mg/mL of GRE completely inhibited the growth of F. solani. Morphological analysis revealed that GRE destroyed the morphology and structure of mycelia, thus inhibiting mycelial growth. Furthermore, GRE suppressed the activities of cell wall-degrading and cellular respiratory-related enzymes and decreased the content of fusaric acid, which reduced or even abrogated the infection ability of F. solani. UPLC-MS/MS analysis showed that GRE constituents belonged to eight categories, among which phenolic acids were the highest in content (46.29%) and tannins were the lowest in content (0.06%). When the antifungal activities of major phenolic and flavonoid compounds were evaluated, 4.0 mg/mL 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 15.0 mg/mL quercetin were found to completely inhibit F. solani growth. These results highlight GRE as an excellent source of antifungal compounds and suggest the possibility of using 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and quercetin as natural fungicides to control crop diseases.
