    Abstract: The study of the origin of asymmetries in mirror β decay is extremely important to understand the fundamental nuclear force and the nuclear structure. The experiment was performed at the National Laboratory of Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL) to measure the β-delayed γ rays of 26P by silicon array and Clover-type high-purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors. Combining with results from the β decay of 26P and its mirror nucleus 26Na, the mirror asymmetry parameter δ ( ≡ft+/ft−− 1) was determined to be 46(13)% for the transition feeding the first excited state in the daughter nucleus. Our independent results support the conclusion that the large mirror asymmetry is close to the proton halo structure in 26P.

    Abstract: A laser master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system consisting of a fiber amplifier and a two-stage Yb:YAG single crystal fiber (SCF) is experimentally studied. The nonlinear stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) is avoided by limiting the output power of the fiber preamplifier to 600 mW. Due to the benefit from the low nonlinearity and high amplification gain of the SCF, a laser pulse duration of 16.95 ps and a high average power of 41.7 W at a repetition rate of 250 kHz are obtained by using a two-stage polarization controlled double-pass amplification of Yb:YAG SCF, corresponding to an output energy of 166.8 μJ and a peak power of 9.84 MW, respectively. The polarization controlled SCF amplification scheme achieved a gain as high as more than 69 times. During the amplification, the spectra gain narrowing effect and the polarization controlled four-pass amplification setup are also studied. The laser spectrum is narrowed from over 10 nm to less than 3 nm, and the pulse width is also compressed to hundreds of femtosecond by dechirping the laser pulse. This compact-sized, cost-effective laser source can be used in laser micromachining, or as the seeder source for generating much higher power and energy laser for scientific research. For some applications which need femtosecond laser, this laser source can also be compressed to femtosecond regime.

    Abstract: Dysfunction of the lenticular nucleus is thought to contribute to neurological symptoms in Wilson’s disease (WD). However, very little is known about whether and how the lenticular nucleus influences dystonia by interacting with the cerebral cortex and cerebellum. To solve this problem, we recruited 37 WD patients (20 men; age, 23.95 ± 6.95 years; age range, 12–37 years) and 37 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) (25 men; age, 25.19 ± 1.88 years; age range, 20–30 years), and each subject underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) scans. The muscle biomechanical parameters and Unified Wilson Disease Rating Scale (UWDRS) were used to evaluate the level of dystonia and clinical representations, respectively. The lenticular nucleus, including the putamen and globus pallidus, was divided into 12 subregions according to dorsal, ventral, anterior and posterior localization and seed-based functional connectivity (FC) was calculated for each subregion. The relationships between FC changes in the lenticular nucleus with muscle tension levels and clinical representations were further investigated by correlation analysis. Dystonia was diagnosed by comparing all WD muscle biomechanical parameters with healthy controls (HCs). Compared with HCs, FC decreased from all subregions in the putamen except the right ventral posterior part to the middle cingulate cortex (MCC) and decreased FC of all subregions in the putamen except the left ventral anterior part to the cerebellum was observed in patients with WD. Patients with WD also showed decreased FC of the left globus pallidus primarily distributed in the MCC and cerebellum and illustrated decreased FC from the right globus pallidus to the cerebellum. FC from the putamen to the MCC was significantly correlated with psychiatric symptoms. FC from the putamen to the cerebellum was significantly correlated with muscle tension and neurological symptoms. Additionally, the FC from the globus pallidus to the cerebellum was also associated with muscle tension. Together, these findings highlight that lenticular nucleus–cerebellum circuits may serve as neural biomarkers of dystonia and provide implications for the neural mechanisms underlying dystonia in WD.

    Abstract: Although ovarian cancer, a gynecological malignancy, has the highest fatality rate, it still lacks highly specific biomarkers, and the differential diagnosis of ovarian masses remains difficult to determine for gynecologists. Our study aimed to obtain ovarian cancer-specific protein candidates from the circulating small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) and develop a protein panel for ovarian cancer screening and differential diagnosis of ovarian masses. In our study, sEVs derived from the serum of healthy controls and patients with cystadenoma and ovarian cancer were investigated to obtain a cancer-specific proteomic profile. In a discovery cohort, 1119 proteins were identified, and significant differences in the protein profiles of EVs were observed among groups. Then, 23 differentially expressed proteins were assessed using the parallel reaction monitoring in a validation cohort. Through univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, a novel model comprising three proteins (fibrinogen gamma gene (FGG), mucin 16 (MUC16), and apolipoprotein (APOA4)) was established to screen patients with ovarian cancer. This model exhibited an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.936 (95% CI, 0.888–0.984) with 92.0% sensitivity and 82.9% specificity. Another panel comprising serum CA125, sEV-APOA4, and sEV-CD5L showed excellent performance (AUC 0.945 (95% CI, 0.890–1.000), sensitivity of 88.0%, specificity of 93.3%, and accuracy of 89.2%) to distinguish malignancy from benign ovarian masses. Altogether, our study provided a proteomic signature of circulating sEVs in ovarian cancer. The diagnostic proteomic panel may complement current clinical diagnostic measures for screening ovarian cancer in the general population and the differential diagnosis of ovarian masses.

    Abstract: Growing evidence supports that individual lifestyle factors contribute to the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) without considering the coexistence and synergistic effect of lifestyle factors. Our aim is to derive a healthy lifestyle score (HLS) and estimate its association with NAFLD. In this nationwide cross-sectional study, we derived a five-item HLS including dietary pattern, body mass index, physical activity, cigarette smoking, and sleep duration. NAFLD and clinically significant fibrosis (CSF) were assessed based on vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE). Liver function parameters were also tested. Multivariable logistic and linear regressions were applied to investigate the association between HLS and liver diseases. Of the 3893 participants with VCTE examination, approximately 14.1% of participants possessed zero or one healthy lifestyle, 62.5% possessed two or three healthy lifestyles, and 23.4% possessed four or five healthy lifestyles. Compared with participants with a low HLS (0–1 score), the adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for those with a high HLS (4–5 score) were 0.25 (0.19~0.33, Ptrend 〈 0.001) for NAFLD and 0.30 (0.18~0.50, Ptrend 〈 0.001) for CSF. HLS was positively associated with albumin, total protein, and total bilirubin (all Ptrend ≤ 0.001), and was inversely associated with globulin, alanine aminotransferase, and gamma-glutamyl transaminase (all Ptrend ≤ 0.003). Higher adherence to HLS is associated with lower odds of NAFLD and CSF and may improve liver function. Strategies for the promotion of a healthy lifestyle should be considered as part of NAFLD prevention.

    Abstract: The surface energy balance algorithm for land (SEBAL) is a commonly used method for estimating evapotranspiration (ET) at a regional scale; however, the cloudy and rainy characteristics of subtropical monsoon regions pose a greater challenge for estimating paddy field ET based on remote sensing technology. To this end, a typical subtropical climate region in southern China (Ganfu Plain irrigation system) was selected as the study area. Subsequently, we evaluated the applicability of the SEBAL model for estimating the ET of paddy fields at the daily scale; derived the interannual variation (2000–2017) characteristics of early, middle, and late rice ET; and finally analyzed the spatial distribution patterns of rice in different hydrological years. The results demonstrated that: (1) the SEBAL model estimated ET accurately on a daily scale, with R2, NSE, and RMSE values of 0.85, 0.81, and 0.84 mm/day, respectively; (2) the ET of paddy fields in the irrigated area was higher in July and August and the interannual trend of ET of early rice was not obvious, with a declining trend observed in middle rice and late rice from 2000 to 2009, which was followed by an increasing trend from 2009 to 2017; and (3) variations in the spatial distribution of ET were significant for early and late rice at different precipitation levels and less obvious for middle rice in wet years but significant in dry years. Overall, this study verified the applicability of the SEBAL model for estimating ET in paddy fields in subtropical regions and provided a basis and reference for the rational allocation of water resources at a regional scale.

    Abstract: Extensive studies have demonstrated the relationship between static street networks and dynamic pedestrian movement. Street vendors temporarily appear in a vibrant space, closely engaging with numerous pedestrians. Is street vending distribution related to street network configuration? And if so, in what ways? This study investigates the heterogeneous relationships between pedestrians, vendors and the urban and suburban places they inhabit in Yuncheng by contrasting two different types of pedestrian-driven maps. The vending distribution map was identified via semi-structured interviews with urban managers (n = 11) in 2017. The spatial network configuration was examined through space syntax segment angular analysis, containing Integration, Choice and Combined Centrality properties at macro-, meso- and micro-scales. By overlapping the distribution map to the syntactic maps in the Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) platform, our results show that street vending distribution is most related to the Choice property at the meso-scale. Using semi-structured interviews (n = 53) and observations at two specific sites, we further found relationships tend to be opposed in urban and suburban areas. The study provides an alternative approach to integrating quantitative and qualitative data, expanding the theoretical and empirical understanding of spatial configuration and urban street activities related to walking and vending. This understanding has the potential to contribute to the design of more liveable street spaces.

    Abstract: A finite element model of an aero-engine dual-rotor system with intermediate bearing supported by six bearings is set up. Three modes of non-concentricity caused by the assembly process are defined, namely parallel non-concentricity, front deflection angle non-concentricity and rear deflection angle non-concentricity. The influence of the non-concentricity on the vibration characteristics of the dual-rotor system is investigated in detail. The results show that the parallel non-concentricity and the front deflection angle non-concentricity have a significant influence on the bending vibration modals of the high-pressure rotor and the low-pressure rotor, but have little influence on the local vibration modals of the rotors. With the increase in the magnitude of the non-concentricity, the natural frequencies of the bending modals decrease continuously, and the mode shapes of bending modals and that of local modals may be interchanged, leading to the emergence of bending modals in advance. Therefore, the key parameters to be controlled in the assembly process are the parallel non-concentricity and the front deflection angle non-concentricity. In order to prevent the bending modal of the dual-rotor system from appearing in advance, it is necessary to control the parallel non-concentricity within 2 mm and the front deflection angle non-concentricity amount within 0.18°.

    Abstract: This work focused on the effects of laser energy density on the relative density, microstructure, and microhardness of Inconel 718 alloy manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM). The microstructural architectures, element segregation behavior in the interdendritic region and the evolution of laves phases of the as-SLMed IN718 samples were analyzed by optical metallography (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The results show that with an increase in the laser volume energy density, the relative density and the microhardness firstly increased and then decreased slightly. It also facilitates the precipitation of Laves phase. The variation of mechanical properties of the alloy can be related to the densification degree, microstructure uniformity, and precipitation phase content of Inconel 718 alloy.

    Abstract: In this study, the performance of Schottky barrier diodes (SBD) based on β-Ga2O3 with floating metal rings (FMR) was investigated using numerical simulations with Technology Computer-Aided Design (TCAD) software. The simulation parameters of β-Ga2O3, including those in barrier lowering, impact ionization, and image-force-lowering models, were extracted from experimental results. Similar forward conduction characteristics to SBDs without FMRs were exhibited by the device, and its breakdown characteristics were influenced by structural parameters such as FMR spacing, width, number, epitaxial layer thickness, and doping concentration. A breakdown voltage of 2072 V was achieved by the optimized device at a doping concentration of 1016 cm−3, which was 2.5 times higher than that of a device without FMRs. This study also indicated that for general doping concentrations and epitaxial layer thicknesses, the breakdown voltage with such structures can reach at least 1.5 times higher than that of a device without FMRs. Overall, insights into optimizing the design of β-Ga2O3-based SBDs with FMRs were provided in this study.
