Abstract: In earthquake monitoring, an important aspect of the operational effect of earthquake intensity rapid reporting and earthquake early warning networks depends on the density and performance of the deployed seismic sensors. To improve the resolution of seismic sensors as much as possible while keeping costs low, in this article the use of multiple low-cost and low-resolution digital MEMS accelerometers is proposed to increase the resolution through the correlation average method. In addition, a cost-effective MEMS seismic sensor is developed. With ARM and Linux embedded computer technology, this instrument can cyclically store the continuous collected data on a built-in large-capacity SD card for approximately 12 months. With its real-time seismic data processing algorithm, this instrument is able to automatically identify seismic events and calculate ground motion parameters. Moreover, the instrument is easy to install in a variety of ground or building conditions. The results show that the RMS noise of the instrument is reduced from 0.096 cm/s2 with a single MEMS accelerometer to 0.034 cm/s2 in a bandwidth of 0.1–20 Hz by using the correlation average method of eight low-cost MEMS accelerometers. The dynamic range reaches more than 90 dB, the amplitude–frequency response of its input and output within −3 dB is DC −80 Hz, and the linearity is better than 0.47%. In the records from our instrument, earthquakes with magnitudes between M2.2 and M5.1 and distances from the epicenter shorter than 200 km have a relatively high SNR, and are more visible than they were prior to the joint averaging.

Abstract: Lead-free double perovskites have been considered as a potential environmentally friendly photovoltaic material for substituting the hybrid lead halide perovskites due to their high stability and nontoxicity. Here, lead-free double perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 films are initially fabricated by single-source evaporation deposition under high vacuum condition. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy characterization show that the high crystallinity, flat, and pinhole-free double perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 films were obtained after post-annealing at 300 °C for 15 min. By changing the annealing temperature, annealing time, and film thickness, perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 solar cells with planar heterojunction structure of FTO/TiO2/Cs2AgBiBr6/Spiro-OMeTAD/Ag achieve an encouraging power conversion efficiency of 0.70%. Our preliminary work opens a feasible approach for preparing high-quality double perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 films wielding considerable potential for photovoltaic application.

Abstract: Drought is one of the most important factors affecting plant growth and productivity. The previous results on drought tolerance (DT) genetic system in soybean indicated a complex of genes not only few ones were involved in the trait. This study is featured with a relatively thorough identification of QTL-allele/candidate-gene system using an efficient restricted two-stage multi-locus multi-allele genome-wide association study, on two comprehensive DT indicators, membership index values of relative plant weight (MPW) and height (MPH), instead of a single biological characteristic, in a large sample (564 accessions) of the Chinese cultivated soybean population (CCSP). Based on 24,694 multi-allele markers, 75 and 64 QTL with 261 and 207 alleles (2–12/locus) were detected for MPW and MPH, explaining 54.7% and 47.1% of phenotypic variance, respectively. The detected QTL-alleles were organized into a QTL-allele matrix for each indicator, indicating DT is a super-trait conferred by two (even more) QTL-allele systems of sub-traits. Each CCSP matrix was separated into landrace (LR) and released cultivar (RC) sub-matrices, which showed significant differentiation in QTL-allele constitutions, with 58 LR alleles excluded and 16 new ones emerged in RC. Using the matrices, optimal crosses with great DT transgressive recombinants were predicted. From the detected QTL, 177 candidate genes were annotated and validated with quantitative Real-time PCR, and grouped into nine categories, with ABA and stress responders as the major parts. The key point of the above results is the establishment of relatively full QTL-allele matrices composed of numerous gene functions jointly conferring DT, therefore, demonstrates the complexity of DT genetic system and potential of CCSP in DT breeding.

Abstract: An electrode material with high performance, long durability, and low cost for supercapacitors has long been desired in academia and industry. Among all the factors that affect the electrochemical performance and cycling stability of electrode materials, the morphology and intrinsic structure characteristics are the most important. In this study, a novel 3D flower-like Ce(COOH)3 electrode material was designed by taking advantage of the Ce3+ and -COOH groups and fabricated by a one-pot microwave-assisted method. The morphology and structure characteristics of the sample were examined by SEM, EDS, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, N2 adsorption/desorption techniques, and the electrochemical behaviors were investigated in a three-electrode configuration. The Ce(COOH)3 electrode presents an excellent specific capacitance of 140 F g−1 at 1 A g−1, higher than many other previously reported Ce-based electrodes. In addition, it delivers high rate capability that retains 60% of its initial capacitance when the current density is magnified 20 times. Dramatically, the Ce(COOH)3 electrode exhibits an ultra-high cycling stability with capacitance retention of 107.9% after 60,000 cycles, which is the highest durability among reported Ce–organic compound electrodes to the best of our knowledge. The excellent electrochemical performance is ascribed to its intrinsic crystal structure and unique morphology. This work indicates that the 3D flower-like Ce(COOH)3 has significant potential for supercapacitor applications and the facile and scalable synthesis strategy can be extended to produce other metal–organic composite electrodes.

Abstract: The mechanism and origins of site-selectivity of Rh2(S-tfpttl)4-catalyzed C(sp3)–H bond aminations were studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The synergistic combination of the dirhodium complex Rh2(S-tfpttl)4 with tert-butylphenol sulfamate TBPhsNH2 composes a pocket that can access both tertiary and benzylic C–H bonds. The nonactivated tertiary C–H bond was selectively aminated in the presence of an electronically activated benzylic C–H bond. Both singlet and triplet energy surfaces were investigated in this study. The computational results suggest that the triplet stepwise pathway is more favorable than the singlet concerted pathway. In the hydrogen atom abstraction by Rh–nitrene species, which is the rate- and site-selectivity-determining step, there is an attractive π–π stacking interaction between the phenyl group of the substrate and the phthalimido group of the ligand in the tertiary C–H activation transition structure. By contrast, such attractive interaction is absent in the benzylic C–H amination transition structure. Therefore, the DFT computational results clearly demonstrate how the synergistic combination of the dirhodium complex with sulfamate overrides the intrinsic preference for benzylic C–H amination to achieve the amination of the nonactivated tertiary C–H bond.

Abstract: As the most prevalent type of birth malformation, congenital heart disease (CHD) gives rise to substantial mortality and morbidity as well as a socioeconomic burden. Although aggregating investigations highlight the genetic basis for CHD, the genetic determinants underpinning CHD remain largely obscure. In this research, a Chinese family suffering from autosomal dominant CHD (atrial septal defect) and arrhythmias was enrolled. A genome-wide genotyping with microsatellite markers followed by linkage assay as well as sequencing analysis was conducted. The functional effects of the discovered genetic mutation were characterized by dual patch-clamp electrophysiological recordings in N2A cells and propidium iodide uptake assays in HeLa cells. As a result, a novel genetic locus for CHD and arrhythmias was located on chromosome 17q21.31-q21.33, a 4.82-cM (5.12 Mb) region between two markers of D17S1861 and D17S1795. Sequencing assays of the genes at the mapped locus unveiled a novel heterozygous mutation in the GJC1 gene coding for connexin 45 (Cx45), NM_005497.4:c.550A 〉 G;p.R184G, which was in co-segregation with the disease in the whole family and was not observed in 516 unrelated healthy individuals or gnomAD. Electrophysiological analyses revealed that the mutation significantly diminished the coupling conductance in homomeric cell pairs (R184G/R184G) and in cell pairs expressing either R184G/Cx45 or R184G/Cx43. Propidium iodide uptake experiments demonstrated that the Cx45 R184G mutation did not increase the Cx45 hemichannel function. This investigation locates a new genetic locus linked to CHD and arrhythmias on chromosome 17q21.31-q21.33 and indicates GJC1 as a novel gene predisposing to CHD and arrhythmias, implying clinical implications for prognostic risk assessment and personalized management of patients affected with CHD and arrhythmias.

Abstract: Background: With the progress of urbanization, the mobility of people has gradually increased, which has led to the further spread of dengue fever. This study evaluated the transmissibility of dengue fever within districts and between different districts in Zhanjiang City to provide corresponding advice for cross-regional prevention and control. Methods: A mathematical model of transmission dynamics was developed to explore the transmissibility of the disease and to compare that between different regions. Results: A total of 467 DF cases (6.38 per 100,000 people) were reported in Zhanjiang City in 2018. In the model, without any intervention, the number of simulated cases in this epidemic reached about 950. The dengue fever transmissions between districts varied within and between regions. When the spread of dengue fever from Chikan Districts to other districts was cut off, the number of cases in other districts dropped significantly or even to zero. When the density of mosquitoes in Xiashan District was controlled, the dengue fever epidemic in Xiashan District was found to be significantly alleviated. Conclusions: When there is a dengue outbreak, timely measures can effectively control it from developing into an epidemic. Different prevention and control measures in different districts could efficiently reduce the risk of disease transmission.

Abstract: Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) scene classification is challenging but widely applied, in which deep learning can play a pivotal role because of its hierarchical feature learning ability. In the paper, we propose a new scene classification framework, named Feature Recalibration Network with Multi-scale Spatial Features (FRN-MSF), to achieve high accuracy in SAR-based scene classification. First, a Multi-Scale Omnidirectional Gaussian Derivative Filter (MSOGDF) is constructed. Then, Multi-scale Spatial Features (MSF) of SAR scenes are generated by weighting MSOGDF, a Gray Level Gradient Co-occurrence Matrix (GLGCM) and Gabor transformation. These features were processed by the Feature Recalibration Network (FRN) to learn high-level features. In the network, the Depthwise Separable Convolution (DSC), Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) Block and Convolution Neural Network (CNN) are integrated. Finally, these learned features will be classified by the Softmax function. Eleven types of SAR scenes obtained from four systems combining different bands and resolutions were trained and tested, and a mean accuracy of 98.18% was obtained. To validate the generality of FRN-MSF, five types of SAR scenes sampled from two additional large-scale Gaofen-3 and TerraSAR-X images were evaluated for classification. The mean accuracy of the five types reached 94.56%; while the mean accuracy for the same five types of the former tested 11 types of scene was 96%. The high accuracy indicates that the FRN-MSF is promising for SAR scene classification without losing generality.
