    Abstract: Aluminum alloys with low density and high specific strength have been widely used in marine engineering. Epoxy coatings, a simple and economical protection strategy, have been applied on alloy surfaces to prolong service life. However, a pure epoxy coating cannot provide long-term protection for metals in the marine environment. Hence, in this work, nano-alumina (nano-Al2O3) modified by polyethyleneimine (PEI) were added into epoxy coatings to enhance anticorrosion properties. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), we found that the molecular chain of PEI was successfully grafted on the surface of nano-Al2O3, and the cross profile of coatings indicated that the modified nano-Al2O3 uniformly dispersed in the epoxy coating. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results demonstrate that the coating resistance of the modified epoxy nanocomposite coating was 10 times higher than that of the pure epoxy coating after 3 days of immersion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Meanwhile, the surface morphologies and EDS-mapping of substrates after EIS testing show that the substrate coated with modified epoxy nanocomposite coating had the smallest amount of corrosion products. These results show that this modified epoxy nanocomposite coating has excellent anticorrosion performance.

    Abstract: As high-quality substitutes for conventional catalysts, the bifunctional catalytic properties of the coating of transition-metal-based materials are pivotal for improving water-splitting efficiency. Herein, cobalt-molybdenum bimetallic phosphide nanofibers (CoMoP NFs) were synthesized via a series of facile strategies, which are divided into pyrolysis electrospun PAN and metal salts, to obtain one-dimensional morphology and a gas-solid phosphating precursor. The obtained CoMoP NFs catalyst has superior catalytic activity performance in 1M KOH. Serving as an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst, the electrode of the CoMoP NFs affords different kinds of current densities at 50 mA cm−2 and 100 mA cm−2, with low overpotentials of 362 and 391 mV, respectively. In addition, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of the CoMoP NFs mainly shows when under a low overpotential of 126 mV, which can deliver a current density of 10 mA cm−2. In order to further detect the stability of the catalyst, we used multiple cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry tests for OERs and HERs, which maintain performance and carry a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for longer. As an integrated high-performance bifunctional electrode for overall water splitting, the CoMoP NFs only require 1.75 V@10 mA cm−2 for 40 h. This work highlights a facile method to create an electrocatalyst with fiber nanostructures which possesses excellent activity as an alkaline electrolyte.

    Abstract: Microwave photonics, based on optical filtering techniques, are attractive for wideband signal processing and high-performance sensing applications, since it brings significant benefits to the fields by overcoming inherent limitations in electronic approaches and by providing immunity to electromagnetic interference. Recent developments in optical filtering based microwave photonics techniques are presented in this paper. We present single sideband modulation schemes to eliminate dispersion induced power fading in microwave optical links and to provide high-resolution spectral characterization functions, single passband microwave photonic filters to address the challenges of eliminating the spectral periodicity in microwave photonic signal processors, and review the approaches for high-performance sensing through implementing microwave photonics filters or optoelectronic oscillators to enhance measurement resolution.

    Abstract: Bi2MoO6 with a tunable morphology was synthesized by a facile hydrothermal route using different surfactants, including nanosheet-assembled microspheres, smooth microspheres, nanoparticle aggregates and nanoparticles. The morphology, crystal structure and photocatalytic activity of as-obtained Bi2MoO6 were characterized by scanning electron microscopes (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and UV–Vis spectrophotometer. Bi2MoO6 flower-like microspheres using cetyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide (BET) as the surfactant exhibited much better photocatalytic activity than Bi2MoO6 with the other morphologies, with a degradation efficiency of 98.4%. It can be summarized that the photocatalytic activity of Bi2MoO6 samples depends on their morphology and composition.

    Abstract: Poplar is an important shelterbelt, timber stand, and city tree species that has been the focus of forestry research. The regulatory role of the long non-coding RNA molecule (lncRNA; length 〉 200 nt) has been a research hotspot in plants. In this study, seedlings of 741 poplar were irradiated with LED blue and white light, and the Illumina HiSeq 2000 sequencing platform was used to identify lncRNAs. |logFC| 〉 1 and p 〈 0.05 were considered to indicate differentially expressed lncRNAs, and nine differentially expressed lncRNAs were screened, the target genes of which were predicted, and three functionally annotated target genes were obtained. The differentially expressed lncRNAs were identified as miRNA targets. Six lncRNAs were determined to be target sites for twelve mRNAs in six miRNA families. LncRNAs and their target genes, including lncRNA MSTRG.20413.1-ptc-miR396e-5p-GRF9, were verified using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis, and the expression patterns were analyzed. The analysis showed that the ptc-miR396e-5p expression was downregulated, while lncRNA MSTRG.20413.1 and GRF9 expression was upregulated, after blue light exposure. These results indicate that lncRNAs interact with miRNAs to regulate gene expression and affect plant growth and development.

    Abstract: The TCP gene family are plant-specific transcription factors that play important roles in plant growth and development. Dendrobium chrysotoxum, D. nobile, and D. huoshanense are orchids with a high ornamental value, but few studies have investigated the specific functions of TCPs in Dendrobium flower development. In this study, we used these three Dendrobium species to analyze TCPs, examining their physicochemical properties, phylogenetic relationships, gene structures, and expression profiles. A total of 50 TCPs were identified across three Dendrobium species; they were divided into two clades—Class-I (PCF subfamily) and Class-II (CIN and CYC/TB1 subfamilies)—based on their phylogenetic relationships. Our sequence logo analysis showed that almost all Dendrobium TCPs contain a conserved TCP domain, as well as the existence of fewer exons, and the cis-regulatory elements of the TCPs were mostly related to light response. In addition, our transcriptomic data and qRT-PCR results showed that DchTCP2 and DchTCP13 had a significant impact on lateral organs. Moreover, changes in the expression level of DchTCP4 suggested its important role in the phenotypic variation of floral organs. Therefore, this study provides a significant reference for the further exploration of TCP gene functions in the regulation of different floral organs in Dendrobium orchids.

    Abstract: Background: With the enormous morbidity and mortality caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections among infants and the elderly, vaccines against RSV infections are in large market demand. Methods: We conducted a first-in-human (FIH), randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled dose escalation study to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity response of the rRSV vaccine (BARS13) in healthy adults aged 18–45. A total of 60 eligible participants were randomly assigned to receive one of four dose levels or vaccination regimens of BARS13 or placebo at a 4:1 ratio. Results: The mean age was 27.40, and 23.3% (14/60) were men. No treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) led to study withdrawal within 30 days after each vaccination. No serious adverse event (SAE) was reported. Most of the treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) recorded were classified as mild. The high-dose repeat group had a serum-specific antibody GMC of 885.74 IU/mL (95% CI: 406.25–1931.17) 30 days after the first dose and 1482.12 IU/mL (706.56–3108.99) 30 days after the second dose, both higher than the GMC in the low-dose repeat group (885.74 IU/mL [406.25–1931.17] and 1187.10 IU/ mL [610.01–2310.13]). Conclusions: BARS13 had a generally good safety and tolerability profile, and no significant difference in terms of adverse reaction severity or frequency was observed between different dose groups. The immune response in repeat-dose recipients shows more potential in further study and has guiding significance for the dose selection of subsequent studies.

    Abstract: Cold atoms trapped and guided in hollow-core photonic crystal fibers provide a scalable diffraction-free setting for atom–light interactions for quantum technologies. However, due to the mismatch of the depth and spatial extension of the trapping potential from free space to the fiber, the number of cold atoms in the fiber is mainly determined by the loading process from free space to waveguide confinement. Here, we provide a numerical study of the loading dynamics of cold atoms into a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. We use the Monte Carlo method to simulate the trajectories of an ensemble of cold atoms from free space trapping potential to optical potential inside a hollow-core fiber and calculate the temperature, loading efficiency, and geometry of the ensemble. We also study the noise sources that cause heating and a loss of atoms during the process. Our result could be used to design and optimize the loading process of cold atoms into a hollow-core fiber for cold atom experiments.

    Abstract: At the basin scale, the operation of surface water reservoirs rarely takes groundwater aquifers into consideration, which can also be regarded as reservoirs underground. This study investigates the impact of reservoir operation on the water cycle and evaluates the effect of the joint operation of surface water and groundwater reservoirs on the water conflict in arid regions through an integrated modeling approach. The Heihe River Basin (HRB) in northwestern China is selected as the study area. Our results show that the ecological operational strategies of a reservoir under construction in the upper HRB have a direct impact on the agricultural water uses and consequently affect other hydrological processes. The ecological operation strategy with a smaller water release and a longer duration is beneficial to securing the environmental flow towards the downstream area and to replenishing aquifers. With the joint operation of surface water and groundwater reservoirs, a balance among the agriculture water need, the groundwater sustainability in the Middle HRB and the ecological water need in the Lower HRB can be flexibly achieved. However, the joint operation can hardly improve the three aspects simultaneously. To resolve the water conflict in HRB, additional engineering and/or policy measures are desired.

    Abstract: The proinflammatory cytokine, interleukin-6 (IL-6), plays a critical role in many chronic inflammatory diseases, particularly inflammatory bowel disease. To investigate the regulation of IL-6 gene expression at the molecular level, genomic DNA sequencing of Jinghai yellow chickens (Gallus gallus) was performed to detect single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the region −2200 base pairs (bp) upstream to 500 bp downstream of IL-6. Transcription factor binding sites and CpG islands in the IL-6 promoter region were predicted using bioinformatics software. Twenty-eight SNP sites were identified in IL-6. Four of these 28 SNPs, three [−357 (G 〉 A), −447 (C 〉 G), and −663 (A 〉 G)] in the 5′ regulatory region and one in the 3′ non-coding region [3177 (C 〉 T)] are not labelled in GenBank. Bioinformatics analysis revealed 11 SNPs within the promoter region that altered putative transcription factor binding sites. Furthermore, the C-939G mutation in the promoter region may change the number of CpG islands, and SNPs in the 5′ regulatory region may influence IL-6 gene expression by altering transcription factor binding or CpG methylation status. Genetic diversity analysis revealed that the newly discovered A-663G site significantly deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. These results provide a basis for further exploration of the promoter function of the IL-6 gene and the relationships of these SNPs to intestinal inflammation resistance in chickens.
