Kurzfassung: There is epidemiological evidence showing that drinking green tea can lower the risk of esophageal cancer (EC). The effect is mainly attributed to tea polyphenols and their most abundant component, (−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). The possible mechanisms of tumorigenesis inhibition of EGCG include its suppressive effects on cancer cell proliferation, angiogenesis, DNA methylation, metastasis and oxidant stress. EGCG modulates multiple signal transduction and metabolic signaling pathways involving in EC. A synergistic effect was also observed when EGCG was used in combination with other treatment methods.

Kurzfassung: Spermatogenesis, sperm motility, and apoptosis are dependent on the regulation of glandular hormones and mitochondria. Natural astaxanthin (ASTA) has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties. The present study evaluates the effects of ASTA on testosterone synthesis and mitochondrial function in aging roosters. Jinghong No. 1 layer breeder roosters (n = 96, 53-week old) were fed a corn–soybean meal basal diet containing 0, 25, 50, or 100 mg/kg ASTA for 6 weeks. The levels of plasma reproductive hormones and the mRNA and protein levels of molecules related to testosterone synthesis were significantly improved (p 〈 0.05) in the testes of the ASTA group roosters. In addition, antioxidant activities and free radical scavenging abilities in roosters of the ASTA groups were higher than those of the control group (p 〈 0.05). Mitochondrial electron transport chain complexes activities and mitochondrial membrane potential in sperm increased linearly with dietary ASTA supplementation (p 〈 0.05). The levels of reactive oxygen species and apoptosis factors decreased in roosters of the ASTA groups (p 〈 0.05). Collectively, these results suggest that dietary ASTA may improve testosterone levels and reduce sperm apoptosis, which may be related to the upregulation of the testosterone synthesis pathway and the enhancement of mitochondrial function in aging roosters.

Kurzfassung: Zoysia japonica is a warm-season turfgrass that is extensively used in landscaping, sports fields, and golf courses worldwide. Uncovering the low-temperature response mechanism of Z. japonica can help to accelerate the development of new cold-tolerant cultivars, which could be used to prolong the ornamental and usage duration of turf. A novel Z. japonica biotype, YueNong-9 (YN-9), was collected from northeastern China for this study. Phenotypic measurements, cold-tolerance investigation, and whole-transcriptome surveys were performed on YN-9 and LanYin-3 (LY-3), the most popular Z. japonica cultivar in Southern China. The results indicated the following: YN-9 has longer second and third leaves than LY-3; when exposed to the natural low temperature during winter in Guangzhou, YN-9 accumulated 4.74 times more anthocyanin than LY-3; after cold acclimation and freezing treatment, 83.25 ± 9.55% of YN-9 survived while all LY-3 leaves died, and the dark green color index (DGCI) value of YN-9 was 1.78 times that of LY-3; in YN-9, there was a unique up-regulation of Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), Homeobox-leucine Zipper IV (HD-ZIP), and ATP-Binding Cassette transporter B8 (ABCB8) expressions, as well as a unique down-regulation of zinc-regulated transporters and iron-regulated transporter-like proteins (ZIPs) expression, which may promote anthocyanin biosynthesis, transport, and accumulation. In conclusion, YN-9 exhibited enhanced cold tolerance and is thus an excellent candidate for breeding cold-tolerant Z. japonica variety, and its unique low-temperature-induced anthocyanin accumulation and gene responses provide ideas and candidate genes for the study of low-temperature tolerance mechanisms and genetic engineering breeding.

Kurzfassung: In this study, solidified films of CaO-Al2O3-BaO-CaF2-Li2O-based mold fluxes with different contents of Al2O3 addition were acquired by immersing an improved water-cooled copper probe in bulk molten slags. This probe can obtain films with representative structures. Different slag temperatures and probe immersion times were employed to investigate the crystallization process. The crystals in the solidified films were identified using X-ray diffraction, the morphologies of the crystals were observed using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and the kinetic conditions, especially the activation energy of devitrified crystallization in glassy slags, were calculated and discussed based on the differential scanning calorimetry. The results indicated that after adding extra Al2O3, the growing speed and thickness of the solidified films increased, and more time was required for the film thickness to reach a steady state. In addition, fine spinel (MgAl2O4) precipitated in the films at the early stage of solidification after adding 10 wt% of extra Al2O3. Together with LiAlO2, spinel (MgAl2O4) acted as nuclei for the precipitation of BaAl2O4. The apparent activation energy of initial devitrified crystallization decreased from 314.16 KJ/mol (original slag) to 297.32 KJ/mol (5 wt% Al2O3 added) and 269.46 KJ/mol (10 wt% Al2O3 added). The crystallization ratio of the films also increased after adding extra Al2O3.

Kurzfassung: Stylosanthes (stylo) species are commercially significant tropical and subtropical forage and pasture legumes that are vulnerable to chilling and frost. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms behind stylos’ responses to low temperature stress. Gretchen-Hagen 3 (GH3) proteins have been extensively investigated in many plant species for their roles in auxin homeostasis and abiotic stress responses, but none have been reported in stylos. SgGH3.1, a cold-responsive gene identified in a whole transcriptome profiling study of fine-stem stylo (S. guianensis var. intermedia) was further investigated for its involvement in cold stress tolerance. SgGH3.1 shared a high percentage of identity with 14 leguminous GH3 proteins, ranging from 79% to 93%. Phylogenetic analysis classified SgGH3.1 into Group Ⅱ of GH3 family, which have been proven to involve with auxins conjugation. Expression profiling revealed that SgGH3.1 responded rapidly to cold stress in stylo leaves. Overexpression of SgGH3.1 in Arabidopsis thaliana altered sensitivity to exogenous IAA, up-regulated transcription of AtCBF1-3 genes, activated physiological responses against cold stress, and enhanced chilling and cold tolerances. This is the first report of a GH3 gene in stylos, which not only validated its function in IAA homeostasis and cold responses, but also gave insight into breeding of cold-tolerant stylos.

Kurzfassung: China has the largest apple-growing area and fresh fruit production in the world; however, water shortages and low fertilizer utilization rates have restricted agricultural development. It is a major challenge to obtain scientific and reasonable irrigation and fertilization systems for young apple trees in semi-arid regions of northern China. A 2-year field bucket experiment with four irrigation levels of W1 (75–90% Fs, where Fs is the field water holding capacity), W2 (65–80% Fs), W3 (55–70% Fs), and W4 (45–60% Fs), and three fertilizer levels of F1 (27-9-9 g N-P2O5-K2O), F2 (18-9-9 g N-P2O5-K2O), and F3 (9-9-9 g N-P2O5-K2O) was conducted in 2019 and 2020, so as to explore the effects of different water and fertilizer treatments on the growth and physiological characteristics of young apple trees. The results showed that the plant growth, leaf area, and dry matter of young apple trees at each growing period reached maximum values under F1W2, and they showed a positive linear relationship with relative chlorophyll content (SPAD), net photosynthetic rate (Pn), transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (Gs), water consumption, and water use efficiency (WUE). With the growth of young apple trees, water-fertilizer coupling could significantly increase the leaf SPAD of young apple trees. Pn, Tr, and Gs reached the maximum value under F1W1, and although they decreased under F1W2, the water use efficiency increased by 2.3–25.7% and 4.0–23.8% under F1W2 compared with other treatments in two years, respectively. The water consumption of young apple trees increased with the increase of irrigation and fertilizer, and both dry matter and water productivity reached the maximum value under F1W2, which increased by 0.8%, 14.6% in 2019, and 0.6%, 11.1% in 2020 compared with F1W1, while water consumption decreased by 12.2% and 9.4% in both years. In conclusion, F1W2 treatment (soil moisture was controlled at 65–80% of field water holding capacity, and N-P2O5-K2O was controlled at 27-9-9 g) was the best coupling mode of water and fertilizer for young apple trees in semi-arid areas of northern China.

Kurzfassung: In this study, novel slags with a high basicity index were used to refine silicon melts with carbon dioxide injection to effectively remove Ti from metallurgical-grade silicon. Different compositions of the initial slag were used, and silicon samples were obtained during the refining. The results indicate that the Ti-removal rate initially increased with an increase in the basicity index, and it decreased after the basicity index exceeded 1.4. During the refining, silicon emulsification was observed at the slag–silicon interface, which was restricted by the increased basicity index of slags. Impurities that were concentrated in silicon droplets near the slag–silicon interfaces were oxidized, wetted by slags, and transferred to the slag phase. After 15 min of refining, up to 59 wt% of Ti in silicon could be removed and the Ti-concentrating phase in the slag contained 2.05 wt% of Ti. The results of this study provide a reference for low-cost Ti removal from metallurgical-grade silicon using a refining method.

Kurzfassung: When exposed to sulfuric acid environments, the service life of concrete structures would be reduced due to the high alkalinity of concrete. The influence of three factors including water/cement ratio, the pH value of the solution, and the chemical composition of the aggregate on the resistance of concrete subjected to sulfuric acid has been widely investigated by previous researchers. This paper aims to investigate the influence of these three factors on the durability evaluation indicators including mass loss and surface fractal dimension through orthogonal experiments, which has been reported rarely in previous research. Four combinations of coarse and fine aggregate including gravel and river sand, gravel and crushed marble sand, crushed marble stone and river sand, and crushed marble stone and marble sand were adopted, and three water/cement ratios including 0.35, 0.45, and 0.55 were selected, and the sulfuric acid solution pH values 0.95, 2, and 4 were chosen in this paper. The results showed that the larger the water/cement ratio, the smaller the mass loss and the surface fractal dimension of the specimens, and with the decrease of the pH value of the sulfuric acid solution, the mass loss and the surface fractal dimension of the specimens would be increased. The concrete specimen containing gravel and river sand had the greatest surface fractal dimension and greatest mass loss, while the concrete specimen containing crushed marble sand had a smaller surface fractal dimension and a smaller mass loss. The dominant and secondary order of three factors on mass loss and surface fractal dimension of concrete subjected to sulfuric acid was the pH value of the solution 〉 the chemical composition of the aggregate 〉 the water/cement ratio.
