    Abstract: Catalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation to carbon monoxide (CO) via reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction is of particular interest due to its direct use in various industrial processes as feedstock. However, the competitive CO2 methanation process severely limits the RWGS reaction in a lower temperature range. In this context, we propose a novel nanocatalyst (NC) comprising oxygen vacancy-enriched subnanometer-scale CoPd hybrid cluster (CoOxVPd)-anchored Pd nanoparticles (NPs) on cobalt oxide support underneath (denoted as CP-CoOxVPd) by using a galvanic replacement reaction-assisted wet chemical reduction method. As-developed CP-CoOxVPd NC initiated the RWGS reaction at 423 K temperature while showing an optimum CO production yield of ∼3414 μmol g−1catalyst and a CO selectivity as high as ∼99% at 523 K in the reaction gas of CO2:H2 = 1:3. The results of physical characterizations along with electrochemical and gas chromatography (GC) suggest that abundant oxygen vacancies in the surface-anchored CoOxVPd clusters are vital for CO2 adsorption and subsequent activation, while neighboring Pd domains facilitate the H2 dissociation. The obtained results are expected to provide a feasible design of Co-based NCs for the RWGS reaction.

    Abstract: This study was designed to explore the impact of the photoperiod on the gonadal development and somatic growth of Atlantic salmon raised in recirculating aquaculture systems (RASs), with specific focus on the role that microRNA (miR)-155 plays as a regulator in the Atlantic salmon’s photoperiodic reproduction. These salmon were reared for 5 months under six different photoperiod regimens, including two with changing photoperiods (LL–SL = 24L:0D–8L:16D and SL–LL = 8L:16D–24L:0D) and four with constant photoperiods (24L:0D, 18L:6D, 12L:12D, and 8L:16D). The longer photoperiod groups (LL–SL and 24L:0D) were ultimately associated with higher gonadosomatic index (GSI) values and an increased proportion of mature fish relative to other exposure groups, indicating that the photoperiod positively impacted the Atlantic salmon’s gonadal development in RAS environments. Hypothalamic miR-155 expression in these Atlantic salmon was also found to be influenced by the photoperiod, showing a markedly decreased expression in salmon exposed to a long photoperiod and upregulation following rearing under a short photoperiod. Functionally, miR-155 was found to suppress the expression of gonadal axis-related genes, including FSH and GnRH, through its ability to target the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and to thereby regulate photoperiod reproduction. Overall, these results suggested that the photoperiod could regulate gonad development in Atlantic salmon with miRNA-155 being involved in this process by targeting the BDNF.

    Abstract: Peptide drugs that target protein–protein interactions have attracted mounting research efforts towards clinical developments over the past decades. Increasing reports have indicated that expression of Musashi 1 (MSI1) is tightly correlated to high grade of cancers as well as enrichment of cancer stem cells. Treatment failure in malignant tumors glioblastoma multiform (GBM) had also been correlated to CSC-regulating properties of MSI1. It is thus imperative to develop new therapeutics that could effectively improve current regimens used in clinics. MSI1 and AGO2 are two emerging oncogenic molecules that both contribute to GBM tumorigenesis through mRNA regulation of targets involved in apoptosis and cell cycle. In this study, we designed peptide arrays covering the C-terminus of MSI1 and identified two peptides (Pep#11 and Pep#26) that could specifically interfere with the binding with AGO2. Our Biacore analyses ascertained binding between the identified peptides and AGO2. Recombinant reporter system Gaussian luciferase and fluorescent bioconjugate techniques were employed to determine biological functions and pharmacokinetic characteristics of these two peptides. Our data suggested that Pep#11 and Pep#26 could function as decoy peptides by mimicking the interaction function of MSI1 with its binding partner AGO2 in vitro and in vivo. Further experiments using GMB animal models corroborated the ability of Pep#11 and Pep#26 in disrupting MSI1/AGO2 interaction and consequently anti-tumorigenicity and prolonged survival rates. These striking therapeutic efficacies orchestrated by the synthetic peptides were attributed to the decoy function to C-terminal MSI1, especially in malignant brain tumors and glioblastoma.

    Abstract: The use and application of robotic systems with a high-definition, three-dimensional vision system and advanced EndoWrist technology have become widespread. We sought to share our clinical experience with ureter identification and preventive uterine artery ligation in robotic hysterectomy. The records of patients undergoing robotic hysterectomy between May 2014 and December 2015, including patient preoperative characteristics, operative time, and postoperative outcomes, were analyzed. We evaluated the feasibility and safety of using early ureteral identification and preventive uterine artery ligation in robotic hysterectomy in patients with benign gynecological conditions. Overall, 49 patients diagnosed with benign gynecological conditions were evaluated. The mean age of the patients and mean uterine weight were 46.2 ± 5.3 years and 348.7 ± 311.8 g, respectively. Robotic hysterectomy achieved satisfactory results, including a short postoperative hospital stay (2.7 ± 0.8 days), low conversion rate (n = 0), and low complication rate (n = 1; 2%). The average estimated blood loss was 109 ± 107.2 mL. Our results suggest that robotic hysterectomy using early ureteral identification and preventive uterine artery ligation is feasible and safe in patients with benign gynecological conditions.

    Abstract: Bulnesia sarmientoi (BS) has long been used as an analgesic, wound-healing and anti-inflammatory medicinal plant. The aqueous extract of its bark has been demonstrated to have anti-cancer activity. This study investigated the anti-proliferative and anti-metastatic effects of BS supercritical fluid extract (BSE) on the A549 and H661 lung cancer cell lines. The cytotoxicity on cancer cells was assessed by an MTT assay. After 72 h treatment of A549 and H661 cells, the IC50 values were 18.1 and 24.7 μg/mL, respectively. The cytotoxicity on MRC-5 normal cells was relatively lower (IC50 = 61.1 μg/mL). BSE arrested lung cancer cells at the S and G2/M growth phase. Necrosis of A549 and H661 cells was detected by flow cytometry with Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining. Moreover, the cytotoxic effect of BSE on cancer cells was significantly reverted by Nec-1 pretreatment, and BSE induced TNF-α and RIP-1 expression in the absence of caspase-8 activity. These evidences further support that BSE exhibited necroptotic effects on lung cancer cells. By wound healing and Boyden chamber assays, the inhibitory effects of BSE on the migration and invasion of lung cancer cells were elucidated. Furthermore, the chemical composition of BSE was examined by gas chromatography-mass analysis where ten constituents of BSE were identified. α-Guaiene, (−)-guaiol and β-caryophyllene are responsible for most of the cytotoxic activity of BSE against these two cancer cell lines. Since BSE possesses significant cytotoxicity and anti-metastatic activity on A549 and H661 cells, it may serve as a potential target for the treatment of lung cancer.

    Abstract: Autoclaving of food wastes (FW) for the resource recovery and reutilization was studied using the pilot plant scale. Experiments were conducted at various temperatures of 408, 428, and 438 K and times of 15 and 60 min. The in-filled steam to the autoclave was supplied by the incineration plant with a gauge pressure of 7 kg/cm2 and a temperature of 443 K or above. The results obtained from the experiments show that the less energy- and time-consuming autoclaving conditions (408 K and 15 min, denoted as Case A408-15) are effective. Comparisons of the properties and characteristics of autoclaved FW (FWA) of Case A408-15 with those of FW are made. The wet bulk volume and wet bulk density of FW A are dramatically reduced to 15.64% and increased to 313.37% relative to those of FW, respectively. This makes the subsequent processing and reuse for FWA more convenient than FW. The autoclaving results in an increase of carbon content and a decrease of nitrogen content, and thus an increase of the C/N ratio of FWA. The contents of sulfur, hemi-cellulose, and cellulose of FWA are also reduced. All these fluctuations are beneficial for making compost or other usages from FWA than FW. The autoclaved liquid product (LA) separated from FWA and liquid condensate (LC) from the released gas possess high COD and TOC. These two liquids can be mixed for use as liquid fertilizers with proper conditioning. Alternatively, further anaerobic digestion of the mixture of FWA, LA, and LC can offer enhanced biogas production for power generation. All these thus match the appeal of sustainable materials management and circular economy. The emitted gas from autoclaving contains no CO and some hydrocarbons. Suitable air pollution control is needed. The results and information obtained are useful for the proper recovery and reuse of abundant food wastes from domestic households and food industries.

    Abstract: Pressure injury is the most important issue facing paralysis patients and the elderly, especially in long-term care or nursing. A new interfacial pressure sensing system combined with a flexible textile-based pressure sensor array and a real-time readout system improved by the Kalman filter is proposed to monitor interfacial pressure progress in the cardiac operation. With the design of the Kalman filter and parameter optimization, noise immunity can be improved by approximately 72%. Additionally, cardiac operation patients were selected to test this developed system for the direct correlation between pressure injury and interfacial pressure for the first time. The pressure progress of the operation time was recorded and presented with the visible data by time- and 2-dimension-dependent characteristics. In the data for 47 cardiac operation patients, an extreme body mass index (BMI) and significantly increased pressure after 2 h are the top 2 factors associated with the occurrence of pressure injury. This methodology can be used to prevent high interfacial pressure in high-risk patients before and during operation. It can be suggested that this system, integrated with air mattresses, can improve the quality of care and reduce the burden of the workforce and medical cost, especially for pressure injury.

    Abstract: Little is known about the effects of seamless hospital discharge planning on long-term care (LTC) costs and effectiveness. This study evaluates the cost and effectiveness of the recently implemented policy from hospital to LTC between patients discharged under seamless transition and standard transition. A total of 49 elderly patients in the standard transition cohort and 119 in the seamless transition cohort were recruited from November 2016 to February 2018. Data collected from medical records included the Multimorbidity Frailty Index, Activities of Daily Living Scale, and Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool during hospitalization. Multiple linear regression and Cox regression models were used to explore risk factors for medical resource utilization and medical outcomes. After adjustment for effective predictors, the seamless cohort had lower direct medical costs, a shorter length of stay, a higher survival rate, and a lower unplanned readmission rate compared to the standard cohort. However, only mean total direct medical costs during hospitalization and 6 months after discharge were significantly (p 〈 0.001) lower in the seamless cohort (USD 6192) compared to the standard cohort (USD 8361). Additionally, the annual per-patient economic burden in the seamless cohort approximated USD 2.9–3.3 billion. Analysis of the economic burden of disability in the elderly population in Taiwan indicates that seamless transition planning can save approximately USD 3 billion in annual healthcare costs. Implementing this policy would achieve continuous improvement in LTC quality and reduce the financial burden of healthcare on the Taiwanese government.

    Abstract: Colistin- and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae cases are increasing at alarming rates worldwide. Drug repurposing is receiving greater attention as an alternative approach in light of economic and technical barriers in antibiotics research. The immunomodulation agent ammonium trichloro(dioxoethylene-O,O’-)tellurate (AS101) was repurposed as an antimicrobial agent against colistin- and carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP). 134 CRKP isolates were collected between 2012 and 2015 in Taiwan. The in vitro antibacterial activities of AS101 was observed through broth microdilution, time-kill assay, and electron microscopy. Pharmaceutical manipulation and RNA microarray were applied to investigate these antimicrobial mechanisms. Caenorhabditis elegans, a nematode animal model, and the Institute for Cancer Research (ICR) mouse model was employed for the evaluation of in vivo efficacy. The in vitro antibacterial results were found for AS101 against colistin- and CRKP isolates, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 〈 0.5 to 32 μg/mL. ROS-mediated antibacterial activity eliminated 99.9% of bacteria within 2–4 h. AS101 also extended the median survival time in a C. elegans animal model infected with a colistin-resistant CRKP isolate and rescued lethally infected animals in a separate mouse model of mono-bacterial sepsis by eliminating bacterial organ loads. These findings support the use of AS101 as an antimicrobial agent for addressing the colistin and carbapenem resistance crisis.
