    Abstract: A modified thermal Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook Lattice Boltzmann (BGK-LB) model was developed to study the convection phenomenon of non-Newtonian fluids (NNFs). This model integrates the local shear rate into the equilibrium distribution function (EDF) of the flow field and keeps the relaxation time from varying with fluid viscosity by introducing an additional parameter. In addition, a modified temperature EDF was constructed for the evolution equation of the temperature field to ensure the precise recovery of the convection–diffusion equation. To validate the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed model, numerical simulations of benchmark problems were performed. Subsequently, we investigated the natural convection of power–law (PL) fluids and examined the impact of the PL index (n = 0.7–1.3) and Rayleigh number (Ra = 103–5 × 105) on the flow and temperature fields while holding the Prandtl number (Pr = 7) constant. The obtained results indicate that, for a given value of n, the convective intensity exhibits a positive correlation with Ra, which is illustrated by the rising trend in the average Nusselt number (Nu¯) with increasing Ra. Additionally, shear-thinning fluid (n 〈 1) exhibited increased Nu¯ values compared to the Newtonian case, indicating an enhanced convection effect. Conversely, shear-thickening fluid (n 〉 1) exhibits reduced Nu¯ values, indicating weakened convective behavior.

    Abstract: Ground-penetrating radar (GPR), as a non-invasive instrument, has been widely used in civil engineering. In GPR B-scan images, there may exist random noise due to the influence of the environment and equipment hardware, which complicates the interpretability of the useful information. Many methods have been proposed to eliminate or suppress the random noise. However, the existing methods have an unsatisfactory denoising effect when the image is severely contaminated by random noise. This paper proposes a multi-scale convolutional autoencoder (MCAE) to denoise GPR data. At the same time, to solve the problem of training dataset insufficiency, we designed the data augmentation strategy, Wasserstein generative adversarial network (WGAN), to increase the training dataset of MCAE. Experimental results conducted on both simulated, generated, and field datasets demonstrated that the proposed scheme has promising performance for image denoising. In terms of three indexes: the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), the time cost, and the structural similarity index (SSIM), the proposed scheme can achieve better performance of random noise suppression compared with the state-of-the-art competing methods (e.g., CAE, BM3D, WNNM).

    Abstract: The published genome sequence of Antheraea yamamai (Saturnnidae) was used to construct a library of long terminal repeat (LTR)-retrotransposons that is representative of the wild silkmoth (Antherea) genus, and that includes 22,666 solo LTRs and 541 full-length LTRs. The LTR retrotransposons of Antheraea yamamai (AyLTRs) could be classified into the three canonical groups of Gypsy, Copia and Belpao. Eleven AyLTRs contained the env gene element, but the relationship with the env element of baculovirus, particularly A. yamamai and pernyi nucleopolyhedrovirus (AyNPV and ApNPV), was distant. A total of 251 “independent” full-length AyLTRs were identified that were located within 100 kb distance (downstream or upstream) of 406 neighboring genes in A. yamamai. Regulation of these genes might occur in cis by the AyLTRs, and the neighboring genes were found to be enriched in GO terms such as “response to stimulus”, and KEGG terms such as “mTOR signaling pathway” among others. Furthermore, the library of LTR-retrotransposons and the A. yamamai genome were used to identify and analyze the expression of LTR-retrotransposons and genes in ApNPV-infected and non-infected A. pernyi larval midguts, using raw data of a published transcriptome study. Our analysis demonstrates that 93 full-length LTR-retrotransposons are transcribed in the midgut of A. pernyi of which 12 significantly change their expression after ApNPV infection (differentially expressed LTR-retrotransposons or DELs). In addition, the expression of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and neighboring DELs on the chromosome following ApNPV infection suggests the possibility of regulation of expression of DEGs by DELs through a cis mechanism, which will require experimental verification. When examined in more detail, it was found that genes involved in Notch signaling and stress granule (SG) formation were significantly up-regulated in ApNPV-infected A. pernyi larval midgut. Moreover, several DEGs in the Notch and SG pathways were found to be located in the neighborhood of particular DELs, indicating the possibility of DEG-DEL cross-regulation in cis for these two pathways.

    Abstract: Gliomas are the most aggressive phenotypes of brain tumors and are classified into four grades according to the malignancy degree by the World Health Organization. Metabolic profiling can provide an overview of metabolic reprogramming at a specific stage of tumor initiation and development. Studies about metabolic alterations related to different grades of gliomas are helpful to understand the molecular mechanism for progression of glioma. In the current study, metabolomics and lipidomics analyses based on chromatography-mass spectrometry were performed on different grades of glioma tissues. Differential metabolites between glioma and para-tumor tissues were studied and used as the basis to explore metabolic alterations related to glioma grading. It was found that short-chain acylcarnitines were elevated, whereas lysophosphatidylethanolamines (LPEs) were decreased in high-grade gliomas. Furthermore, the gene expression of short/branched-chain acyl-coenzyme dehydrogenase (ACADSB), which is involved in fatty acid oxidation, was found down-regulated with glioma progression by analyzing related genes and pathways. In addition, LPE metabolism showed a significant difference among different grades of gliomas. These important metabolic pathways related to glioma progression may provide potential clues for further study on the mechanisms and treatment of glioma.

    Abstract: Total flower and pod numbers (TFPN) and effective pod numbers per plant (PNPP) are among the most important agronomic traits for soybean production. However, the underlying genetic mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we constructed a recombinant inbred line population derived from a cross between JY73 (high TFPN) and TJSLH (low TFPN) to map loci for the two traits. In total, six QTL for TFPN and five QTL for PNPP were identified, among which a QTL on chromosome 4, named qFPN4, explained 9.2% and 9.6% of the phenotypic variation of TFPN and PNPP, respectively. Analysis of residual heterozygous lines for qFPN4 indicated that TFPN or PNPP was controlled by a single dominant gene at this locus and delimited the QTL into a ~2.62 Mb interval which tightly linked to an Indel marker C1-5. This mapping result was further confirmed by bulked segregant analysis (BSA) of the near isogenic lines. The genome-sequencing-based BSA also identified eight candidate genes carrying nonsynonymous SNPs and/or Indels; two genes, Glyma.04G176600 and Glyma.04G178900, were nominated as the most promising genes for qFPN4 based on additional expression and function analysis. These results improve our understanding of the genetic mechanism of TFPN and PNPP and indicate the potential for soybean yield improvement.

    Abstract: Virus–host interactions are critical for virus replication, virulence, and pathogenicity. The Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) is a typical model baculovirus, representing one of the most common and harmful pathogens in sericulture. Herein, we used co-immunoprecipitation to identify candidate proteins with potential interactions with BmNPV. First, a recombinant BV virus particle rBmBV-egfp-p64-3×flag-gp64sp was constructed using a MultiBac baculovirus multigene expression system. Co-immunoprecipitation experiments were then performed with the recombinant BV virus infected with BmN cells and Dazao silkworms. LC-MS/MS analysis revealed a total of 845 and 1368 candidate proteins were obtained from BmN cells and silkworm samples, respectively. Bioinformatics analysis (Gene Ontology, KEGG Pathway) was conducted for selection of proteins with significant enrichment for further confirmation of the effects on BmNPV replication. Overall, the results showed that SEC61 and PIC promoted the replication of BmNPV, while FABP1 inhibited the replication of BmNPV. In summary, this study reveals the potential proteins involved in BmNPV invasion and proliferation in the host and provides a platform for identifying the potential receptor proteins of BmNPV.

    Abstract: Plastic polymers are widely used in agriculture, industry, and our daily life because of their convenient and economic properties. However, pollution caused by plastic polymers, especially polyethylene (PE), affects both animal and human health when they aggregate in the environment, as they are not easily degraded under natural conditions. In this study, Enterobacter sp. D1 was isolated from the guts of wax moth (Galleria mellonella). Microbial colonies formed around a PE film after 14 days of cultivation with D1. Roughness, depressions, and cracks were detected on the surface of the PE film by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed the presence of carbonyl functional groups and ether groups on the PE film that was treated with D1. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS) also revealed that the contents of certain alcohols, esters, and acids were increased as a result of the D1 treatment, indicating that oxidation reaction occurred on the surface of the PE film treated with D1 bacteria. These observations confirmed that D1 bacteria has an ability to degrade PE.

    Abstract: A metal layer with high reflectance is widely used as the bottom mirror of smart radiation devices. Reduced solar absorption and enhanced emittance tunability are required for smart radiation devices applied in aerospace. Thus, reducing the absorption in the metal is also necessary. Here, Al films have been prepared by direct current magnetron sputtering on the fused silica substrate. The structure, morphology, and optical properties of the films have been analyzed at various deposition temperatures and deposition times. The spectrum absorption tends to increase with the increase of surface roughness due to the agglomeration and size increase of Al particles, which has been further demonstrated by the simulated results. The optimized Al film exhibits small solar absorption of 0.14 and low emittance of 0.02, which benefits the application for smart radiation devices and solar reflectors.
