    Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyze the dynamic properties of gas hydrate development from a large hydrate simulator through numerical simulation. A mathematical model of heat transfer and entropy production of methane hydrate dissociation by depressurization has been established, and the change behaviors of various heat flows and entropy generations have been evaluated. Simulation results show that most of the heat supplied from outside is assimilated by methane hydrate. The energy loss caused by the fluid production is insignificant in comparison to the heat assimilation of the hydrate reservoir. The entropy generation of gas hydrate can be considered as the entropy flow from the ambient environment to the hydrate particles, and it is favorable from the perspective of efficient hydrate exploitation. On the contrary, the undesirable entropy generations of water, gas and quartz sand are induced by the irreversible heat conduction and thermal convection under notable temperature gradient in the deposit. Although lower production pressure will lead to larger entropy production of the whole system, the irreversible energy loss is always extremely limited when compared with the amount of thermal energy utilized by methane hydrate. The production pressure should be set as low as possible for the purpose of enhancing exploitation efficiency, as the entropy production rate is not sensitive to the energy recovery rate under depressurization.

    Abstract: Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive breast cancer subtype, with shorter five-year survival than other breast cancer subtypes, and lacks targeted and hormonal treatment strategies. The signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling is up-regulated in various tumors, including TNBC, and plays a vital role in regulating the expression of multiple proliferation- and apoptosis-related genes. Results: By combining the unique structures of the natural compounds STA-21 and Aulosirazole with antitumor activities, we synthesized a class of novel isoxazoloquinone derivatives and showed that one of these compounds, ZSW, binds to the SH2 domain of STAT3, leading to decreased STAT3 expression and activation in TNBC cells. Furthermore, ZSW promotes STAT3 ubiquitination, inhibits the proliferation of TNBC cells in vitro, and attenuates tumor growth with manageable toxicities in vivo. ZSW also decreases the mammosphere formation of breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs) by inhibiting STAT3. Conclusions: We conclude that the novel isoxazoloquinone ZSW may be developed as a cancer therapeutic because it targets STAT3, thereby inhibiting the stemness of cancer cells.

    Abstract: Seamounts are features generated by hot spots and associated intraplate volcanic activity. The geochemical characteristics of igneous rocks constituting seamounts provide evidence of important details of dynamic processes in the Earth, such as mantle magma source areas, and are key to understanding how mantle plume processes control the formation and evolution of seamounts and their resulting geochemical characteristics. The Pacific Ocean contains a large number of hitherto unstudied seamounts, whose ages and geochemical characteristics remain poorly known. This study presents the geochemical characteristics of six basalt samples from five seamounts in the Western Pacific and the 40Ar/9Ar ages of three samples are determined. The new analysis yielded 40Ar/39Ar ages for seamounts samples MP3D21, MP5D11, and MP5D15A of 95.43 ± 0.33, 62.4 ± 0.26, and 99.03 ± 0.4 Ma, respectively. The geochemical profiles of seamounts samples MP3D04, MP3D21, MP5D11, MP5D15A, MPID201, and MPID202 are consistent with alkaline basalts, as evidence by alkali-rich, silicon-poor compositions along with high titanium concentrations. The primitive mantle normalized rare-earth elements and trace elements spider pattern are similar to those of ocean island basalts. The Ta/Hf and Nb/Zr ratios and La/Zr-Nb/Zr discriminant diagrams indicate that the six seamounts formed from magma that originated in the deep mantle.

    Abstract: Marine–terrestrial transitional Permian shales occur throughout South China and have suitable geological and geochemical conditions for shale gas accumulation. However, the Permian shales have not made commercial exploitation, which causes uncertainly for future exploration. In this study, high-pressure methane (CH4) adsorption experiments were carried out on the Permian shales in the Lower Yangtze area, and the influences of total organic carbon (TOC) content and temperature on adsorption parameters were investigated. The characteristics and main controlling factors of methane storage capacity (MSC) of the Permian shales are discussed. The results show that the maximum adsorption and the adsorbed phase density of these Permian samples are positively correlated with TOC contents but negatively correlated with temperatures. The pores of organic matter in shale, especially a large number of micropores and mesopores, can provide important sites for methane storage. Due to underdeveloped pore structure and poor connectivity, the methane adsorption capacities of the Permian shales are significantly lower than those of marine shales. Compared with the Longmaxi shales, the lower porosity and lower methane adsorption of the Permian shales are reasonable explanations for their lower gas-in-place (GIP) contents. It is not suitable to apply the index system of marine shales to the evaluation of marine–terrestrial transitional shales. The further exploration of Permian shales in the study area should be extended to overpressure stable reservoirs with high TOC contents (e.g., 〉 5%), high porosity (e.g., 〉 3%), and deep burial (e.g., 〉 2000 m).

    Abstract: Accurate in situ leaf area index (LAI) estimates of forest plots are required to validate currently-used LAI map products. Woody-to-total area ratio ( α ) is a crucial parameter in converting the plant area index estimates of forest plots obtained by optical methods into LAI. Although optical methods for estimating the α of forest canopy have been proposed, their performance has never been assessed. In this study, five Larix gmelinii Rupr. forest plots with contrasting plot characteristics (i.e., tree age, tree height, management activities, stand density, and site conditions) were selected. The performance of two commonly used optical methods, namely, multispectral canopy imager (MCI) and digital hemispherical photography (DHP), in estimating the α of L. gmelinii forest plots was evaluated by using the reference α of the selected forest plots. The reference α of forest plots was measured via destructive method by harvesting two or three representative trees in each plot. Large variations were observed amongst the reference α of the selected forest plots (ranging from 0% to 56%). These α were also highly correlated with the site conditions and management activities in these plots. The effective α ( α e ) or α estimated using the leaf-on and leaf-off periods MCI or DHP images with or without consideration of the clumping effects of canopy element and woody components were 1.57 to 4.63 times the reference α in the five plots. The overestimation of α or α e was mainly caused by the preferential shading of woody components by the shoots in the leaf-on canopy. Accurate α estimates for the L. gmelinii forest plots with errors of less than 20% can be obtained from MCI when the clumping effects of canopy element and woody components are considered in the estimation.

    Abstract: Fully or partially sealing the openings of tunnels to accelerate the self-extinction of fires provides a promising firefighting tactic to beat large fires in a long tunnel. So far, most experimental studies on the characteristics of fire with different sealing ratios have been conducted in reduced-scale tunnels. However, whether the findings in a reduced-scale tunnel can be converted to its full-scale prototype tunnel based on scaling laws has not yet been adequately studied. A series of experiments with heat-release rates of 15.8, 31.6 and 63.2 kW were conducted with sealing ratios ranging from 0% to 100% in a prototype tunnel measuring 20 m long, 0.9 m wide and 0.46 m high. The experimental results were compared with those from a 1/2 reduced-scale tunnel measuring 10 m long, 0.45 m wide and 0.23 m high. It showed that temperature rise along the tunnel in the 1/2 reduced-tunnel could be significantly underestimated. The differences in temperature rise increased monotonously with distance away from the fire seat, and they were as high as 70% at the tunnel portals, irrespective of the heat-release rates and sealing ratios. The study showed that the scale effect of fires was not sensitive to the Reynolds number of flows in tunnels. The minimal sealing ratio for the self-extinction of fires in the prototype tunnel was 85%, whilst it was 75% in the 1/2 reduced-scale tunnel, and the study revealed that the fires were much easier to extinguish in the 1/2 reduced-scale tunnel than those in the prototype tunnel, where the fires can sustain in a lower oxygen concentration. The study demonstrated that scaling laws could be invalid for tunnel fires with different sealing ratios and that results observed in reduced-scale tunnels should be further verified when applied to full-scale prototypes.

    Abstract: Chigger mites are the exclusive vector of scrub typhus. Based on field investigations of 91 survey sites in 5 provincial regions of Southwest China, this paper reported variations of chigger infestation on the oriental house rat (Rattus tanezumi) along various environmental gradients. A total of 149 chigger species were identified from 2919 R. tanezumi in the 5 provincial regions, and Leptotrombidium deliense (a major vector of scrub typhus in China) was the first dominant chigger species, followed by Ascoschoengastia indica and Walchia ewingi. Rattus tanezumi had a stable overall prevalence (PM = 21.10%), mean abundance (MA = 7.01), and mean intensity (MI = 33.20) of chiggers with the same dominant mites in the whole Southwest China in comparison with a previous report in Yunnan Province, but chigger infestations on R. tanezumi varied along different environmental gradients. Rattus tanezumi in mountainous landscape had a higher infestation load of chiggers with higher species diversity than in flatland landscape. The infestation was higher at lower altitudes and latitudes. A high intensity of vegetation coverage was associated with high infestations. The results reflect the environmental heterogeneity of chiggers on the same host species. Warm climate and high relative humidity are beneficial to chigger infestation on R. tanezumi.

    Abstract: Biogenic microvesicles (MVs) play a pivotal role in intercellular signal communication, thus initiating critical biological responses such as the proliferation of cancer cells, gene and protein transport, and chemo-drug resistance. In addition, they have been recognized as having great potential in drug delivery applications. However, the productivity of biologically produced MVs is not sufficient for clinical applications. In this study, synthetic poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) MVs were prepared via a double emulsion method. The PLGA MVs had a biogenic MV-mimic vesicular structure with a hydrophilic core/surface and hydrophobic interior of the shell, showing great potential for drug delivery. We successfully embedded hydrophobic iron carbonyl (IC), a carbon monoxide (CO) donor, in the PLGA shell region, enabling the delivery of IC in an aqueous solution. Because of the intrinsic properties of PLGA, it was susceptible to temperature, and the MVs could easily collapse in a warm environment, leading to the decomposition of IC into CO. The in vitro result indicated that the cell viability of A549 lung carcinoma cells significantly decreased to 14% after treatment with IC-loaded PLGA MVs for 24 h, suggesting that these synthetic PLGA MVs constitute an excellent drug delivery platform.

    Abstract: Responsive feeding is crucial to the formation of life-long healthy eating behavior. Few studies have examined maternal responsive feeding in early infancy among a Chinese population. This prospective study describes maternal responsive feeding and factors associated with maternal responsive feeding, with emphasis on infant growth and maternal depressive symptoms, during the first 3 months postpartum in Taiwan. From 2015 to 2017, 438 pregnant women were recruited and followed at 1 and 3 months postpartum. Maternal responsive feeding at 3 months was measured on a 10-item 5-point Likert-type scale. Maternal depressive symptoms were measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale with a cutoff score of 10. Infant growth was categorized into four groups based on weight-for-length Z scores from birth to 3 months: no change, increase but in the normal range, increase to overweight, and decrease to underweight. Multiple regression revealed that postpartum depressive symptoms, primipara, and decreased infant weight-for-length Z score were negatively associated with maternal responsive feeding, while exclusive breastfeeding and maternal age younger than 29 years were positively associated with maternal responsive feeding. Heath professionals should educate mothers on responsive feeding, with emphases on first-time and non-exclusive breastfeeding mothers, as well as those with depressive symptoms, advanced maternal age, and infants who are becoming underweight.
