    Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of depressive symptoms, insomnia symptoms, and comorbid depressive and insomnia symptoms on the quality of life among community-dwelling older adults in an urban area of central Greece. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 older adults (aged ≥ 60) collected from five Open Care Centers for Elderly People of the Municipality of Larissa, Greece. Data were obtained through a questionnaire that included demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related characteristics; the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQoL)-Bref questionnaire; the Geriatric Depression Scale; and the Athens Insomnia Scale. The prevalences of depression, insomnia, and comorbid depression and insomnia were 28% (95% confidence interval (95% CI): 21.8–34.2%), 40.5% (95% CI: 33.7–47.3%), and 19% (95% CI: 13.5–24.5%), respectively. The mean WHOQoL-Bref score for all domains was approximately 14.50, with the highest mean value observed for psychological health (14.79 ± 2.60), followed by the physical health (14.49 ± 2.66), social relationships (14.39 ± 2.03), and environmental domains (14.32 ± 1.90). All WHOQoL-Bref domains were negatively correlated with depression and insomnia. Older adults with depressive symptoms, insomnia symptoms, and comorbid depressive and insomnia symptoms had lower scores in all quality of life dimensions compared with those without.

    Abstract: Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, particularly in the presence of hepatic fibrosis, is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events, including ischemic stroke. However, it is unclear whether hepatic fibrosis is associated with the severity and outcome of acute ischemic stroke. Aim: To evaluate the relationship between hepatic fibrosis and the severity at admission and in-hospital outcome of acute ischemic stroke. Patients and methods: We prospectively studied all patients who were admitted to our department with acute ischemic stroke between September 2010 and February 2018 (n = 1107; 42.1% males, age 79.8 ± 7.2 years). The severity of stroke was assessed at admission with the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). Severe stroke was defined as NIHSS ≥ 21. The presence of hepatic fibrosis was evaluated with the Fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4). The outcome was assessed with dependency at discharge (modified Rankin Scale between 2 and 5) and with in-hospital mortality. Results: Patients with severe stroke had a higher FIB-4 index than patients with non-severe stroke (2.7 ± 1.7 and 2.3 ± 1.4, respectively; p 〈 0.05). Independent risk factors for severe IS were age (relative risk (RR) 1.064, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.030–1.100, p 〈 0.001), female sex (RR 1.723, 95% CI 1.100–2.698, p = 0.012), atrial fibrillation (RR 1.869, 95% CI 1.234–2.831, p = 0.002), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (RR 1.019, 95% CI 1.006–1.033, p = 0.001), and the FIB-4 index (RR 1.130, 95% CI 1.007–1.268, p = 0.022). At discharge, 64.2% of patients were dependent. The FIB-4 index did not differ between patients who were dependent and those who were independent at the time of discharge (2.3 ± 1.5 and 2.1 ± 1.2, respectively; p = 0.061). During hospitalization, 9.8% of patients died. Patients who died during hospitalization had a higher FIB-4 index than those who were discharged (2.9 ± 1.8 and 2.3 ± 1.4, respectively; p 〈 0.005). Independent risk factors for in-hospital mortality were DBP (RR 1.022, 95% CI 1.010–1.034, p 〈 0.001), serum glucose levels (RR 1.004, 95% CI 1.001–1.007, p = 0.007), serum triglyceride levels (RR 0.993, 95% CI 0.987–0.999, p = 0.023), NIHSS (RR 1.120, 95% CI 1.092–1.149, p 〈 0.001), and the FIB-4 index (RR 1.169, 95% CI 1.060–1.289, p = 0.002). Conclusions: Hepatic fibrosis, evaluated with the FIB-4 index, appears to be associated with more severe ischemic stroke and might also represent an independent risk factor for in-hospital mortality in patients admitted with acute ischemic stroke.

    Abstract: This study aimed to examine the reliability and validity of the Euthanasia Attitude Scale (EAS) in Greek medical doctors. A cross-sectional study design was conducted, including 120 physicians at clinical setting in 2019 (men 64.5%). A self-report questionnaire, including socio-demographic data and the Euthanasia Attitude Scale, which assesses attitudes towards euthanasia, were used for data collection. The mean (standard deviation) of the EAS were 74.62 (14.33). The Cronbach’s alpha was 0.944 and the confirmatory factor analysis to investigate the validity of the EAS scale, after modification effects, revealed an acceptable adjustment for the questionnaire. The GFI index was above 0.8 and close to 0.9, and the CFI index was above 0.9, which is the acceptable limit. The RMSEA index was acceptable below 0.08. The total Gr-EAS correlated with all five factors (Pearson r = 0.400–0.973, p 〈 0.001). According to the findings of this study, the Euthanasia Attitude Scale is a reliable and valid measure for assessing the attitudes toward euthanasia in Greek physicians. This Greek adaptation will be valuable in future studies examining the attitude of physicians towards euthanasia.

    Abstract: Randomized complete block design was used, with three replications. Heterosis for yield and fruit quality characteristics was studied, and expressed as Relative heterosis, heterobeltiosis and Standard heterosis. It would be expected, according to the dominance model, that the heterosis recorded after crossing the recombinant lines, having only a small portion of recessive deleterious alleles, would be minimal. The results showed that the elite recombinant inbred lines became the parents of elite restructured hybrids, with increased levels of re-heterosis for all characters measured. This may prove that dominance is not the only case in explaining heterosis in tomato for yield components and fruit quality characteristics. Several recombinant lines, and most of the new reconstructed F1 hybrids, showed excellent productivity under a low input farming system. The evaluation and selection of the different types of cultivars (recombinant pure lines or reconstructed hybrids) under low input conditions could point towards the most suitable/ideal genotype for organic cultivation.

    Abstract: Although MSCs grant pronounced potential for cell therapies, several factors, such as their heterogeneity restrict their use. To overcome these limitations, iMSCs (MSCs derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have attracted attention. Here, we analyzed the transcriptome of MSCs, iPSCs and iMSCs derived from healthy individuals and osteoarthritis (OA) patients and explored miRNA-mRNA interactions during these transitions. We performed RNA-seq and gene expression comparisons and Protein-Protein-Interaction analysis followed by GO enrichment and KEGG pathway analyses. MicroRNAs’ (miRNA) expression profile using miRarrays and differentially expressed miRNA’s impact on regulating iMSCs gene expression was also explored. Our analyses revealed that iMSCs derivation from iPSCs favors the expression of genes conferring high proliferation, differentiation, and migration properties, all of which contribute to a rejuvenated state of iMSCs compared to primary MSCs. Additionally, our exploration of the involvement of miRNAs in this rejuvenated iMSCs transcriptome concluded in twenty-six miRNAs that, as our analysis showed, are implicated in pluripotency. Notably, the identified here interactions between hsa-let7b/i, hsa-miR-221/222-3p, hsa-miR-302c, hsa-miR-181a, hsa-miR-331 with target genes HMGA2, IGF2BP3, STARD4, and APOL6 could prove to be the necessary tools that will convey iMSCs into the ideal mean for cell therapy in osteoarthritis.

    Abstract: Background: The recurrence rate of lumbar spine microdiscectomies (rLSMs) is estimated to be 5–15%. Lumbar spine flexion (LSF) of more than 10° is mentioned as the most harmful load to the intervertebral disc that could lead to recurrence during the first six postoperative weeks. The purpose of this study is to quantify LSFs, following LSM, at the period of six weeks postoperatively. Methods: LSFs were recorded during the daily activities of 69 subjects for 24 h twice per week, using Inertial Measurement Units (IMU). Results: The mean number of more than 10 degrees of LSFs per hour were: 41.3/h during the 1st postoperative week (P.W.) (29.9% healthy subjects-H.S.), 2nd P.W. 60.1/h (43.5% H.S.), 3rd P.W. 74.2/h (53.7% H.S.), 4th P.W. 82.9/h (60% H.S.), 5th P.W. 97.3/h (70.4% H.S.) and 6th P.W. 105.5/h (76.4% H.S.). Conclusions: LSFs constitute important risk factors for rLDH. Our study records the lumbar spine kinematic pattern of such patients for the first time during their daily activities. Patients’ data report less sagittal plane movements than healthy subjects. In vitro studies should be carried out, replicating our results to identify if such a kinematic pattern could cause rLDH. Furthermore, IMU biofeedback capabilities could protect patients from such harmful movements.

    Abstract: One of the most crucial steps during the implementation of a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) as well the relevant transportation projects is the final measures and policies’ selection that will be realized in order for the plan to achieve the study area targets. There are many methodologies that have been used for a specific purpose, with cost-effective and cost–benefit analysis being the most popular. According to the new specifications of SUMPs, the co-creation and co-planning of the future measures taking into account the opinions of all the relevant stakeholders and groups of citizens is the main parameter that will ensure the success of the planning. For this reason, MCA is the methodology proposed to be used for collecting and analyzing the different opinions. The aim of the current work is to prove, through a targeted Greek survey, the effectiveness of the MCA, not only to merge the different opinions and priorities of the stakeholders but also to highlight and rank realistically the most important sustainable mobility measures that should be implemented in an urban area. The work proposes and tests a specific methodological framework based on the use of the preference ranking organization method for enrichment of evaluations (PROMETHEE) method.

    Abstract: Novel pillared-layered framework materials were synthesized by high-throughput or microwave-assisted methodology that contain Mg2+ and the zwitterionic linker HDTMP (hexamethylenediamine-N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis(methylenephosphonic acid)). Three compounds were structurally characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. In the compound {Mg[(HO3PCH2)2N(CH2)6N(CH2PO3H2)2]·(H2O)}n(1), obtained at 140 °C by hydrothermal or microwave-assisted reaction, the layers are built by isolated Mg2+ octahedra coordinated by oxygen atoms from six different zwitterionic HDTMP ligands. Each amino-bis(methylenephosphonate) moiety links three Mg2+ ions, bridging two of them through one phosphonate group and connecting the third polyhedron in a monodentate fashion. In Compound 2, {Mg[(HO3PCH2)2N(CH2)6N(CH2PO3H2)2] }n, hydrothermally synthesized at 180 °C, the layers are composed of bidentate amino-bis(methylenephosphonate) moieties connected to three Mg2+ ions, with one of the phosphonate groups acting as a bridging ligand. Various subtle structural changes are noted for the other two compounds. Thermodiffraction of 1 reveals that a crystalline-to-crystalline phase transformation occurs concomitantly with its dehydration, leading to a new anhydrous phase, namely, {Mg[(HO3PCH2)2N(CH2)6N(CH2PO3H2)2]}n(1deh). This process is fully reversible upon equilibrating the solid at room temperature. The reported compounds can adsorb ammonia and CO2. Compound 1 exhibits a moderate proton conductivity, ~1.5 × 10−5 S·cm−1 at 80 °C and 95% RH, that increases a half order of magnitude after experiencing a complete dehydration/rehydration process, 1→1deh→1.

    Abstract: Adequate nutrition is of utmost importance for athletes, especially during rehabilitation after injury in order to achieve fast healing and return to sports. The aim of this narrative review is to define the proper nutritional elements for athletes to meet their needs and facilitate their fast return to sports after surgery or injury, as well as determine the effects of specific nutrients intake. Studies on antioxidants, which are substances that protect against free radicals, for the injured athlete are few and unclear, yet poly-phenols and especially flavonoids might improve healing and inflammation following an injury. Benefits of vitamin C or E on muscle damage are disputable in relevant studies, while optimal levels of vitamin D and calcium contribute to bone healing. Minerals are also essential for athletes. Other supplements suggested for muscle damage treatment and protein synthesis include leucine, creatine, and hydroxymethylbutyrate. Diets that include high-quality products, rich in micronutrients (like vitamins, minerals, etc.) bio-active compounds and other nutritional elements (like creatine) are suggested, while an individualized nutrition program prescribed by a trained dietitian is important. Further studies are needed to clarify the underlying mechanisms of these nutritional elements, especially regarding injury treatment.

    Abstract: Bisphosphonate drugs constitute the primary treatment for bone diseases such as Paget’s disease and osteoporosis. Despite their effectiveness, they also exhibit severe drawbacks, such as rapid excretion and limited oral bioavailability. High doses are usually administered to counterbalance these drawbacks. Subsequently, side effects are triggered, such as osteonecrosis of the lower jaw and esophageal cancer. Controlled drug release systems may be viable candidates to overcome those issues. Herein, we present novel functionalized silica-based hydrogels loaded with the osteoporosis drug etidronate (1,1-hydroxyethylidene-diphosphonate) used to control the release profile of the drug. Various methodologies were evaluated to control the initial release rate and the final released concentration of the drug. These included the gel density, by systematically increasing the initial concentration of silicate used to prepare the hydrogels, the presence of metal cations (Ca2+ and Cu2+), and the internal surface functionalization of the gel with silane-based grafting agents (with anionic, cationic, and neutral groups). This study also contributes to our continuous effort to develop new a priori programmable drug-loaded gels for the controlled release of osteoporosis drugs.
