Abstract: Goats are produced in Laos on a small scale and most of them are exported to Vietnam, where they receive a price approximately 30% higher than Vietnamese crossbred goats. In 2021, Laos exported 2.2 million dollars in sheep and goats, mostly to Vietnam (2.19 million dollars). Vietnam was also the fastest-growing export market for sheep and goats of Laos between 2020 and 2021, comprising 66.7% of the total exports. This study aims to analyze the goat value chain from Laos to Vietnam and, based on its characteristics, to suggest policy interventions for the socio-economic sustainable development of the chain. This research analyzes a sample of 400 survey interviews of goat chain actors collected during the second and third quarters of 2022, with the support of CommCare software version 2.53.1. The results show that the Lao goat chain has four main functions implemented by four prominent actors: goat-rearing farmers, traders, abattoir owners, and restaurant owners. However, the role of input suppliers is unclear in this chain. Support to the stakeholders has been provided by local authorities and the government, projects and NGOs, technical supporters, and license supporters. There was not any clear evidence of the goat processing industry. Vertical and horizontal linkages between stakeholders exist, but agreements are primarily oral. There is no declaration of leading actors, and a traceability system has yet to be implemented. The increase in Lao goat exports to the Vietnamese market is driven by the high demand from Vietnamese consumers. The commercialization of goats’ yields provides a positive net income in Lao, where all actors benefit, especially traders and restaurant owners. The chain also creates job opportunities and income that improve living standards, especially for disadvantaged groups, such as women, middle-aged people, people with low literacy, and those living in rural areas. For the sustainable development of the chain, this research recommends that the Lao and Vietnamese governments work together to develop more favorable conditions for goat trading, to improve the traceability across the goat chain, to promote goat husbandry and feeding practices, and to foster goat farmer collaboration by sharing goat-rearing experiences.

Abstract: Vibriosis in farmed animals is a serious threat to aquaculture worldwide. Using probiotics and anti-Vibrio antimicrobial substances in aquaculture systems can be a means of preventing Vibrio infections. Therefore, we aimed to characterize and compare 16 potential anti-Vibrio probiotics (Vi+) isolated from marine sponges and fish intestines collected from the Vietnam Sea, as well as an anti-Vibrio bacteriocin to fully explore their application potentials. 16S rRNA sequencing confirmed all Vi+ to be Bacillus species with different strain variants across two sample types. An obvious antimicrobial spectrum toward Gram-negative bacteria was observed from intestinal Vi+ compared to sponge-associated Vi+. The reason was the higher gene frequency of two antimicrobial compounds, non-ribosomal peptides (NRPS) and polyketide type-I (PKS-I) from intestinal Vi+ (66.7%) than sponge-associated Vi+ (14.3% and 0%, respectively). Additionally, a three-step procedure was performed to purify an anti-Vibrio bacteriocin produced by B. methylotrophicus NTBD1, including (i) solvent extraction of bacteriocin from cells, (ii) hydrophobic interaction chromatography, and (iii) reverse-phase HPLC. The bacteriocin had a molecular weight of ~2–5 kDa, was sensitive to proteolysis and thermally stable, and showed a broad antimicrobial spectrum, all of which are essential properties for promising feed additives. This study provides necessary information of the potential of probiotic Bacillus species with anti-Vibrio antimicrobial properties to study their further use in sustainable aquaculture.

Abstract: No validated instrument is available for assessing the evidence-based practice capacity of Vietnamese health professionals. This study aimed to translate and validate the Health Sciences Evidence-Based Practice questionnaire (HS-EBP) from English to Vietnamese and ascertain its psychometric properties. Data were collected from two obstetric hospitals in Vietnam. Participants: A total of 343 midwives were randomly selected. The HS-EBP questionnaire was translated by a group of bilingual experts into Vietnamese (HS-EBP-V). Content validity was assessed by two experts. Internal consistency and test–retest reliabilities were assessed using Cronbach’s α and intraclass correlation (ICC), respectively. Construct validity was assessed using the contrasted groups approach. As a result, the content validity index of the HS-EBP-V reached 1.0. For the individual subscales, Cronbach’s α was 0.92–0.97 and ICC was between 0.45 and 0.66. The validity of the contrasted-groups approach showed discrimination by a significant difference in the subscale scores among diploma holders compared with bachelor’s degree holders (p 〈 0.001). The validation of the HS-EBP questionnaire indicated satisfactory psychometric properties. The results indicate that the HS-EBP is a reliable and valid instrument which assesses the competencies of as well as facilitators of and barriers to the five steps of EBP among midwives. The HS-EBP-V was deemed a reliable and validated tool for assessing the competency and application of EBP among Vietnamese healthcare professionals.

Abstract: Water purification is becoming one of the most pertinent environmental issues throughout the world. Among common types of water pollution involving heavy metals, pharmaceutical drugs, textile dyes, personal care products, and other persistent organic pollutants, the pollution of antibiotic drugs is increasingly emerging due to their adverse effects on microorganisms, aquatic animals, and human health. Therefore, the treatment of such contaminants is very necessary to reduce the concentration of antibiotic pollutants to permissible levels prior to discharge. Herein, we report the use of NiFe2O4@C composites from a bimetallic-based metal-organic framework Ni-MIL-88B(Fe) for removal of ciprofloxacin (CFX) and tetracycline (TCC). The effect of production temperatures (600–900 °C), solution pH (2–10), NiFe2O4@C dose (0.05–0.2 g/L), concentration of antibiotics (10–60 mg/L), and uptake time (0–480 min) was investigated systematically. Response surface methodology and central composite design were applied for quadratic models to discover optimum conditions of antibiotic adsorption. With high coefficients of determination (R2 = 0.9640–0.9713), the proposed models were significant statistically. Under proposed optimum conditions, the adsorption capacity for CFX and TCC were found at 256.244, and 105.38 mg/g, respectively. Recyclability study was employed and found that NiFe2O4@C-900 could be reused for up to three cycles, offering the potential of this composite as a good adsorbent for removal of emergent antibiotics.

Abstract: The aim of extending shelf-life and maintaining quality is one of the major issues regarding mango fruit preservation. The quality of mango fruits is greatly affected by postharvest factors, especially temperature and fruit treatment. In this study, the effect of coating and storage temperature on the characteristics of mango fruits was investigated. The mango fruits were immersed in different concentrations (1.5%, 2.0%, and 2.5%) of pectin/nanochitosan dispersion (with ratios of pectin:nanochitosan 50:50), and (0.75%, 1% and 1.25%) of nanochitosan dispersion and stored at 17, 25, and 32 °C for 24 days. Changes in fruit, including weight loss, firmness, color, chemical composition (such as the total soluble solids concentration (TSS)), total sugar, reducing sugar, titratable acidity (TA), and vitamin C were periodically recorded. The results indicated that the pectin/nanochitosan coating significantly prevented reductions in the fruit weight, firmness, TSS, TA, and vitamin C content. Additionally, pectin/nanochitosan at a low temperature (17 °C) had a greater positive effect on fruit shelf-life and weight maintenance than 25 and 32 °C. The coated mango fruits maintained good quality for 24 days at 17 °C, while coated fruits stored at 25 °C and 32 °C, as well as uncoated ones stored at 17 °C, were destroyed after two weeks. At the maximum storage time evaluated, the coating formulations containing pectin and nanochitosan exhibited microbial counts below the storage life limit of 106 CFU/g of fruit. In general, the results showed that the pectin/nanochitosan coating (2%) with a storage temperature of 17 °C is the most effective strategy for improving quality and extending the shelf-life of mango fruits.

Abstract: Damage assessment is one of the most crucial issues for bridge engineers during the operational and maintenance phase, especially for existing steel bridges. Among several methodologies, the vibration measurement test is a typical approach, in which the natural frequency variation of the structure is monitored to detect the existence of damage. However, locating and quantifying the damage is still a big challenge for this method, due to the required human resources and logistics involved. In this regard, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based approach seems to be a potential way of overcoming such obstacles. This study deployed a comprehensive campaign to determine all the dynamic parameters of a predamaged steel truss bridge structure. Based on the results for mode shape, natural frequency, and damping ratio, a finite element model (FEM) was created and updated. The artificial intelligence network’s input data from the damage cases were then analysed and evaluated. The trained artificial neural network model was curated and evaluated to confirm the approach’s feasibility. During the actual operational stage of the steel truss bridge, this damage assessment system showed good performance, in terms of monitoring the structural behaviour of the bridge under some unexpected accidents.

Abstract: In this study, activated carbon derived from mangosteen peel (abbreviated as ACMP) was successfully fabricated. This as-prepared ACMP possessed graphite and had a porous structure with a specific surface area of 419.8554 m2/g. Investigations of the influencing factors on the ciprofloxacin (CIP) adsorption capability of the ACMP based on the static adsorption method showed that: adsorption equilibrium can be achieved in 60 min, the optimal pH for CIP adsorption was a pH of 6, and the optimal ratio between the material mass and solution volume was 3 g/L. The CIP adsorption process of the ACMP follows the Langmuir, Freundlich, Tempkin, Elovich, and Redlich–Peterson isotherm adsorption models. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated according to the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model for the CIP of the ACMP was (qmax = 29.76 mg/g). The CIP adsorption process of the ACMP followed the apparent quadratic kinetic equation, as well as spontaneous, endothermic, physical, and chemical adsorption. The adsorption rate was governed by membrane diffusion.

Abstract: In this work, the multilayer of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor was optimized to achieve the maximum sensor sensitivity. By optimizing the thickness of the silver layer (Ag) and dielectric films (TiO2 and AlAs), the optimum sensitivity of the SPR sensor could be obtained. The performance of the SPR sensor proposed was compared with control simulations utilizing zinc oxide (ZnO) and molybdenum oxide (MoO3). The numerical results indicate that the figure-of-merits (FOM) of the SPR sensor was achieved around 150/RIU, corresponding to the sensor sensitivity of 162.79°/RIU with the optimized thicknesses of the TiO2, Ag, and AlAs layers of 140 nm, 60 nm, and 25 nm, respectively. This refractive index sensor shows the FOM to have high detection accuracy and high sensitivity that lead to finding potential application in bio-chemical detection with a small volume of liquid used in biological diagnosis.

Abstract: Rivaroxaban (RIV) is commonly prescribed with carbamazepine or phenytoin (CBZ/PHT) in post-stroke seizure or post-stroke epilepsy patients. Although adverse events have been reported in several previous studies when they are coadministered, there are no studies of the interactions between these drugs. Therefore, our study was conducted to solve this lack of information. The potential effects of CBZ/PHT were investigated by comparing the pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) parameters of RIV between the control group (RIV alone) and the test groups (RIV administered with CBZ/PHT) in rats using the noncompartmental analysis (NCA) and the compartmental model approach. The NCA results indicate that AUCt of RIV decreased by 57.9% or 89.7% and Cmax of RIV decreased by 43.3% or 70.0% after administration of CBZ/PHT, respectively. In addition, both CBZ and PHT generally reduced the effects of RIV on the prothrombin times of the blood samples. PK profiles of RIV were most properly described by a two-compartment disposition model with a mixed first- and zero-order absorption kinetics and a first-order elimination kinetics. The compartmental model approach showed that a 211% or 1030% increase in CL/F of RIV and a 33.9% or 43.4% increase in D2 of RIV were observed in the test groups by the effects of CBZ/PHT, respectively. In conclusion, CBZ and PHT significantly reduced RIV exposure and therefore reduced the therapeutic effects of RIV. Consequently, this might result in adverse events due to insufficient RIV concentration to attain its therapeutic effects. Further studies are needed to validate this finding.

Abstract: Galgeuntang (GGT), a traditional herbal medicine, is widely co-administered with acetaminophen (AAP) for treatment of the common cold, but this combination has not been the subject of investigation. Therefore, we investigated the herb–drug interaction between GGT and AAP by population pharmacokinetics (PKs) modeling and simulation studies. To quantify PK parameters and identify drug interactions, an open label, three-treatment, three-period, one-sequence (AAP alone, GGT alone, and AAP and GGT in combination) clinical trial involving 12 male healthy volunteers was conducted. Ephedrine (EPD), the only GGT component detected, was identified using a one-compartment model. The PKs of AAP were described well by a one-compartment model and exhibited two-phase absorption (rapid followed by slow) and first-order elimination. The model showed that EPD significantly influenced the PKs of AAP. The simulation results showed that at an AAP dose of 1000 mg × 4 times daily, the area under the concentration versus time curve of AAP increased by 16.4% in the presence of GGT compared to AAP only. In conclusion, the PKs of AAP were affected by co-administration of GGT. Therefore, when AAP is combined with GGT, adverse effects related to overdose of AAP could be induced possibly.
