    Abstract: In Myanmar, yellow mosaic and leaf curl diseases caused by whitefly-transmitted begomoviruses are serious problems for vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers. To investigate the incidence of begomoviruses in Myanmar between 2017 and 2019, a field survey of tomato and pepper plants with virus-like symptoms was conducted in the Naypyitaw, Tatkon, and Mohnyin areas of Myanmar. Among the 59 samples subjected to begomovirus detection using polymerase chain reaction, 59.3% were infected with begomoviruses. Complete genome sequences using rolling circle amplification identified five begomovirus species: tomato yellow leaf curl Thailand virus (TYLCTHV), tomato yellow leaf curl Kanchanaburi virus (TYLCKaV), tobacco leaf curl Yunnan virus (TbLCYnV), chili leaf curl Pakistan virus (ChiLCV/PK), and tobacco curly shoot Myanmar virus (TbCSV-[Myanmar]). Excluding the previously reported TYLCTHV, three begomoviruses (ChiLCV/PK, TYLCKaV, and TbLCYnV) were identified in Myanmar for the first time. Based on the 91% demarcation threshold of begomovirus species, TbCSV-[Myanmar] was identified as a new species in this study. Among these, ChiLCV/PK and TbCSV-[Myanmar] were the most predominant in tomato and pepper fields in Myanmar. Identification of begomovirus species may be helpful for predicting the origin of viruses and preventing their spread.

    Abstract: Maturing male germ cells undergo a unique developmental process in spermiogenesis that replaces nucleosomal histones with protamines, the process of which is critical for testicular development and male fertility. The progress of this exchange is regulated by complex mechanisms that are not well understood. Now, with mouse genetic models, we show that barrier-to-autointegration factor-like protein (BAF-L) plays an important role in spermiogenesis and spermatozoal function. BAF-L is a male germ cell marker, whose expression is highly associated with the maturation of male germ cells. The genetic deletion of BAF-L in mice impairs the progress of spermiogenesis and thus male fertility. This effect on male fertility is a consequence of the disturbed homeostasis of histones and protamines in maturing male germ cells, in which the interactions between BAF-L and histones/protamines are implicated. Finally, we show that reduced testicular expression of BAF-L represents a risk factor of human male infertility.

    Abstract: The effects of replacing over-mature forest with secondary forests and plantations are significant for terrestrial ecosystem carbon (C) dynamics. However, the carbon balance and recovery time of this replacement process remain unclear. This study measured the fluxes of CH4 and CO2 in soils and the annual net C sequestration (ANCS) from seven ecosystems with different vegetation types (over-mature forest (OMF), Korean pine plantation (KPP), hardwood forest (HWF), Betula platyphylla forest (BPF), Populous davidiana forest (PDF), mixed deciduous forest (MDF), and Mongolian oak forest (MOF)) using the static chamber-gas chromatography method and the relative growth equation method. We examined the effects of environmental factors (e.g., air and soil temperature, soil volumetric water content (SVWC), soil pH, nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N), ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), and soil organic carbon (SOC)) on CH4 and CO2 fluxes at the Maoershan Ecosystem Research Station in Northeast China. The carbon source or sink of OMF, KPP, and five secondary forests (HWF, BPF, PDF, MDF, and MOF) were then evaluated based on net ecosystem C balance. The results revealed that the mean annual CH4 fluxes varied between −0.046 and −0.077 mg m−2 h−1. The mean annual absorption of CH4 in the secondary forests and OMF were respectively 1.09–1.67 times and 1.11 times higher than that of KPP (0.046 mg m−2 h−1, p 〈 0.05). The mean annual CO2 fluxes varied between 140.425 and 250.023 mg m−2 h−1. The CO2 fluxes in the secondary forests and KPP soils were respectively 1.33–1.78 times and 1.16 times higher than that of OMF (140.425 mg m−2 h−1, p 〈 0.05). The CH4 and CO2 fluxes were mainly influenced by air and soil temperature, SVWC, soil pH, NO3−-N, NH4+-N, and SOC in Northeast China. The ANCS of vegetation (3.41 ± 0.27 − 6.26 ± 0.75 t C ha−1 y−1) varied widely among different forest types: KPP had the largest ANCS (6.26 ± 0.75 t C ha−1 y−1, which was higher than secondary forests and OMF by 1.20–1.84 times and 1.46 times, respectively, p 〉 0.05). Carbon sources and sinks were significantly different among the seven types of vegetation: OMF and KPP were observed to be the greatest C sinks, and secondary forests were shown to be the weakest carbon sinks or net C sources in the study region.

    Abstract: Background: To date, there is no licensed vaccine available to prevent respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. The valuable pre-fusion conformation of the fusion protein (pre-F) is prone to lose high neutralizing antigenic sites. The goals of this study were to stabilize pre-F protein by fixatives and try to find the possibility of developing an inactivated RSV vaccine. Methods: The screen of the optimal fixative condition was performed with flow cytometry. BALB/c mice were immunized intramuscularly with different immunogens. The serum neutralizing antibody titers of immunized mice were determined by neutralization assay. The protection and safety of these immunogens were assessed. Results: Fixation in an optimal concentration of formaldehyde (0.0244%–0.0977%) or paraformaldehyde (0.0625%–1%) was able to stabilize pre-F. Additionally, BALB/c mice inoculated with optimally stabilized pre-F protein (opti-fixed) induced a higher anti-RSV neutralization (9.7 log2, mean value of dilution rate) than those inoculated with unstable (unfixed, 8.91 log2, p 〈 0.01) or excessively fixed (exce-fixed, 7.28 log2, p 〈 0.01) pre-F protein. Furthermore, the opti-fixed immunogen did not induce enhanced RSV disease. Conclusions: Only the proper concentration of fixatives could stabilize pre-F and the optimal formaldehyde condition provides a potential reference for development of an inactivated RSV vaccine.

    Abstract: In this paper, we report an AlN-based ceramic lead frame (LF) with encapsulating silicone between the surface of an AlGaN-based ultraviolet-B light-emitting diode (UVB-LED) chip and a quartz glass cover; the light output power (LOP) of this structure was 13.8% greater than that of the corresponding packaging structure without encapsulating silicone. Another packaging structure in which the silicone fully filled the cavity of the AlN-based ceramic LF included covering with quartz glass; in this case, the enhancement of the LOP was 11.7%. Reliability tests performed over a period of 3500 h at a forward current (If) of 100 mA revealed that the LOPs of these two silicone-containing packaging types decreased to 45.3 and 48.6%, respectively, of their initial values. The different degradation rates of these UVB-LEDs were not, however, correlated with the appearance of cracks in the encapsulating silicone during long-term operation. Excluding any possible mechanisms responsible for degradation within the UVB-LED chips, we suggest that the hermetic cover should be removed to avoid the appearance of cracks. Moreover, the main mechanism responsible for the slow degradation rates of LOPs in these proposed packaging structures involves the encapsulated silicone, after cracks have appeared, undergoing further deterioration by the UVB irradiation.

    Abstract: A quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) model for the structure and affinity of abrin aptamers was established. A higher affinity abrin aptamer based on the established QSAR model was screened by site-directed mutagenesis. The fluorescence quenching effect between magnetic microspheres and fluorescent molecules was studied for the first time. A new method for abrin detection based on the interaction between target molecules and fluorescently labeled aptamers on magnetic microspheres was developed, with the detection limit of 5 ng mL−1. This method can overcome the influence of complex environmental interferents in abrin detection and can meet the analysis requirements for simulated samples such as water, soil, and food.

    Abstract: A typhoon is an extreme weather event with strong destructive force, which can bring huge losses of life and economic damage to people. Thus, it is meaningful to reduce the prediction errors of typhoon intensity forecasting. Artificial and deep neural networks have recently become widely used for typhoon forecasting in order to ensure typhoon intensity forecasting is accurate and timely. Typhoon intensity forecasting models based on long short-term memory (LSTM) are proposed herein, which forecast typhoon intensity as a time series problem based on historical typhoon data. First, the typhoon intensity forecasting models are trained and tested with processed typhoon data from 2000 to 2014 to find the optimal prediction factors. Then, the models are validated using the optimal prediction factors compared to a feed-forward neural network (FNN). As per the results of the model applied for typhoons Chan-hom and Soudelor in 2015, the model based on LSTM using the optimal prediction factors shows the best performance and lowest prediction errors. Thus, the model based on LSTM is practical and meaningful for predicting typhoon intensity within 120 h.

    Abstract: Petal color is an important agronomic trait in cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata). Although the key gene BoCCD4 has been functionally characterized, the underlying molecular regulatory mechanism of petal color formation in cabbage is still unclear. In this study, we applied the transcriptome analysis of yellow petals from the cabbage inbred line YL-1 and white petals from the Chinese kale inbred line A192-1 and the BoCCD4-overexpressing transgenic line YF-2 (YL-1 background), which revealed 1928 DEGs common to both the A192-1 vs. YL-1 and the YL-1 vs. YF-2 comparison groups. One key enzyme-encoding gene, BoAAO3, and two key TF-encoding genes, Bo2g151880 (WRKY) and Bo3g024180 (SBP), related to carotenoid biosynthesis were significantly up-regulated in both the A192-1 and YF-2 petals, which was consistent with the expression pattern of BoCCD4. We speculate that these key genes may interact with BoCCD4 to jointly regulate carotenoid biosynthesis in cabbage petals. This study provides new insights into the molecular regulatory mechanism underlying petal color formation in cabbage.

    Abstract: Quantum key distribution (QKD) has attracted much attention due to its unconditional security. High-dimensional quantum key distribution (HD-QKD) is a brand-new type of QKD protocol that has many excellent advantages. Nonetheless, practical imperfections in realistic devices that are not considered in the theoretical security proof may have an impact on the practical security of realistic HD-QKD systems. In this paper, we research the influence of a realistic intensity modulator on the practical security of HD-QKD systems with the decoy-state method and finite-key effects. We demonstrate that there is a certain impact in the secret key rate and the transmission distance when taking practical factors into security analysis.

    Abstract: In this paper, the unbalanced discharge of lithium-ion battery module caused by heat dissipation is studied. The battery pack is composed of 12 batteries, which are divided into four modules in series, and three batteries in each module are in parallel. The three-dimensional electrochemical-thermal model of a single battery and a battery pack is established by the polynomial approximation pseudo-two-dimensional (PP2D) method in ANSYS fluent 16.0, and the correctness of the model is verified by simulation and experiment. On this basis, the non-uniform temperature distribution and the coupling relationship between electrical parameters and electrochemical parameters in the battery pack under inhomogeneous heat dissipation were studied. The mechanism of how the temperature difference affects the distribution of current and state of charge (SOC) is also given. According to the research results, the control of the average temperature of the battery pack and the control of temperature difference are incompatible and need to be traded off. Enhanced cooling can reduce the average temperature, but it produces a large temperature gradient, resulting in a greater internal temperature difference of the battery pack. The large temperature difference enlarges the difference of the branch current and aggravates the unevenness of SOC in the battery pack. In addition, the temperature difference most suitable for SOC uniformity is not the traditional 5 °C but increases with the increase of the ambient temperature and the cooling medium temperature.
