    Abstract: Thyroid hormone abnormalities are among the most common endocrine disorders comorbidly suffered alongside metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and within the euthyroid range they may also impact other outcomes, such as mood disorders. This study aimed to observationally examine the relationship between TSH and social determinants of health and clinical measures in a euthyroid Hispanic/Latinx patient sample with a diagnosis of anxiety and/or depression disorders from a community health clinic. A needs assessment was completed using a random sample of 100 de-identified medical records of individuals who received free medical care, including mental health, at a community-based clinic. Those with low normal TSH ( 〈 2 mIU/L) compared with high normal TSH (≥2 mIU/L) had a greater odds of food insecurity (p = 0.016) and being at 100% of the federal poverty level (p = 0.015). The low normal TSH group had significantly higher fasting glucose (p = 0.046), hemoglobin A1c (p = 0.018), and total cholesterol (p = 0.034) compared with the high normal TSH group. In those with T2DM, individuals with low normal TSH had six-times greater odds of having high fasting glucose (p = 0.022) and high hemoglobin A1c (p = 0.029). These relationships warrant further study, to inform future public health policies and follow-up care for underserved and vulnerable communities.

    Abstract: Viral infections have afflicted human health and despite great advancements in scientific knowledge and technologies, continue to affect our society today. The current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has put a spotlight on the need to review the evidence on the impact of nutritional strategies to maintain a healthy immune system, particularly in instances where there are limited therapeutic treatments. Selenium, an essential trace element in humans, has a long history of lowering the occurrence and severity of viral infections. Much of the benefits derived from selenium are due to its incorporation into selenocysteine, an important component of proteins known as selenoproteins. Viral infections are associated with an increase in reactive oxygen species and may result in oxidative stress. Studies suggest that selenium deficiency alters immune response and viral infection by increasing oxidative stress and the rate of mutations in the viral genome, leading to an increase in pathogenicity and damage to the host. This review examines viral infections, including the novel SARS-CoV-2, in the context of selenium, in order to inform potential nutritional strategies to maintain a healthy immune system.

    Abstract: The soil-borne fungus Dactylonectria torresensis is the most common causal agent of black-foot disease in Europe. However, there is a lack of understanding on how this fungus can provoke plant symptoms. In this study, we sequenced, annotated and analyzed the genomes of three isolates of D. torresensis collected from asymptomatic vine, weed and soil. Sequenced genomes were further compared to those of 27 fungal species including root and aerial pathogens, white rot degraders, indoor biodeterioration agents, saprotrophs, dark septate endophytes and mycorrhiza. Strains of D. torresensis present genomes with between 64 and 65 Mbp and with up to 18,548 predicted genes for each strain. Average Nucleotide Identity (ANI) shows that strains are different according to genome contents. Clusters of orthologous groups were compared, and clusters of genes related to necroses were particularly detected in all strains of D. torresensis (necrosis inducing peptides and proteins, and ethylene inducing peptides) as well as several genes involved in resistance against fungicides frequently used in viticulture such as copper. Interestingly, an expanded high number of genes related to carbohydrate-active enzymes were detected in each Dactylonectria strain, especially those related to glycoside hydrolases that could be involved in penetration of plant tissues or pathogenicity. An increased number of candidate genes for CAZyme classes AA9 and AA3-1 supports the ability of strains to efficiently degrade plant material. High numbers of genes of D. torresensis related to secretome and small secreted proteins were further characterized. Moreover, the presence of several gene clusters such as fujikurin-like genes was detected and were normally found in Fusariumfujikuroi, that have been linked to fungal pathogenicity. The phenotypes of the three strains investigated showed further difference in light response. We found that Dactylonectria strains have an increased number of photoreceptor encoding genes and we showed sequence alterations. Altogether, the results highlight several gene clusters present in D. torresensis strains that could be linked to endophytic lifestyle, pathogenicity, plant maceration and degradation of plant tissues as well as adaptation to soil contaminated with metals and metalloids and light response.

    Abstract: Nutritional interventions have beneficial effects on certain psychiatric disorder symptomatology and common physical health comorbidities. However, studies evaluating nutritional literacy in mental health professionals (MHP) are scarce. This study aimed to assess the across 52 countries. Surveys were distributed via colleagues and professional societies. Data were collected regarding self-reported general nutrition knowledge, nutrition education, learning opportunities, and the tendency to recommend food supplements or prescribe specific diets in clinical practice. In total, 1056 subjects participated in the study: 354 psychiatrists, 511 psychologists, 44 psychotherapists, and 147 MHPs in-training. All participants believed the diet quality of individuals with mental disorders was poorer compared to the general population (p 〈 0.001). The majority of the psychiatrists (74.2%) and psychologists (66.3%) reported having no training in nutrition. Nevertheless, many of them used nutrition approaches, with 58.6% recommending supplements and 43.8% recommending specific diet strategies to their patients. Only 0.8% of participants rated their education regarding nutrition as ‘very good.’ Almost all (92.9%) stated they would like to expand their knowledge regarding ‘Nutritional Psychiatry.’ There is an urgent need to integrate nutrition education into MHP training, ideally in collaboration with nutrition experts to achieve best practice care.

    Abstract: The gut–liver axis has been recognized as a potential pathway in which dietary factors may contribute to liver disease in people living with HIV (PLWH). The objective of this study was to explore associations between dietary quality, the fecal microbiome, the metabolome, and liver health in PLWH from the Miami Adult Studies on HIV (MASH) cohort. We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 50 PLWH from the MASH cohort and utilized the USDA Healthy Eating Index (HEI)–2015 to measure diet quality. A Fibrosis-4 Index (FIB-4) score 〈 1.45 was used as a strong indication that advanced liver fibrosis was not present. Stool samples and fasting blood plasma samples were collected. Bacterial composition was characterized using 16S rRNA sequencing. Metabolomics in plasma were determined using gas and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Statistical analyses included biomarker identification using linear discriminant analysis effect size. Compared to participants with FIB-4 ≥ 1.45, participants with FIB-4 〈 1.45 had higher intake of dairy (p = 0.006). Fibrosis-4 Index score was inversely correlated with seafood and plant protein HEI component score (r = −0.320, p = 0.022). The relative abundances of butyrate-producing taxa Ruminococcaceae, Roseburia, and Lachnospiraceae were higher in participants with FIB-4 〈 1.45. Participants with FIB-4 〈 1.45 also had higher levels of caffeine (p = 0.045) and related metabolites such as trigonelline (p = 0.008) and 1-methylurate (p = 0.023). Dietary components appear to be associated with the fecal microbiome and metabolome, and liver health in PLWH. Future studies should investigate whether targeting specific dietary components may reduce liver-related morbidity and mortality in PLWH.

    Abstract: Since αvβ3 integrin is a key component of angiogenesis in health and disease, Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) peptide-functionalized nanocarriers have been investigated as vehicles for targeted delivery of drugs to the αvβ3 integrin-overexpressing neovasculature of tumors. In this work, PEGylated nanoparticles (NPs) based on poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) functionalized with cyclic-RGD (cRGD), were evaluated as nanocarriers for the targeting of angiogenic endothelium. For this purpose, NPs (~300 nm) functionalized with cRGD with different surface densities were prepared by maleimide-thiol chemistry and their interactions with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were evaluated under different conditions using flow cytometry and microscopy. The cell association of cRGD-NPs under static conditions was time-, concentration- and cRGD density-dependent. The interactions between HUVECs and cRGD-NPs dispersed in cell culture medium under flow conditions were also time- and cRGD density-dependent. When washed red blood cells (RBCs) were added to the medium, a 3 to 8-fold increase in NPs association to HUVECs was observed. Moreover, experiments conducted under flow in the presence of RBC at physiologic hematocrit and shear rate, are a step forward in the prediction of in vivo cell–particle association. This approach has the potential to assist development and high-throughput screening of new endothelium-targeted nanocarriers.

    Abstract: Recycling bioresources is the only way to sustainably meet a growing world population’s food and energy needs. One of the ways to do so is by using agro-industry wastewater to cultivate microalgae. While the industrial production of microalgae requires large volumes of water, existing agro-industry processes generate large volumes of wastewater with eutrophicating nutrients and organic carbon that must be removed before recycling the water back into the environment. Coupling these two processes can benefit the flourishing microalgal industry, which requires water, and the agro-industry, which could gain extra revenue by converting a waste stream into a bioproduct. Microalgal biomass can be used to produce energy, nutritional biomass, and specialty products. However, there are challenges to establishing stable and circular processes, from microalgae selection and adaptation to pretreating and reclaiming energy from residues. This review discusses the potential of agro-industry residues for microalgal production, with a particular interest in the composition and the use of important primary (raw) and secondary (digestate) effluents generated in large volumes: sugarcane vinasse, palm oil mill effluent, cassava processing waster, abattoir wastewater, dairy processing wastewater, and aquaculture wastewater. It also overviews recent examples of microalgae production in residues and aspects of process integration and possible products, avoiding xenobiotics and heavy metal recycling. As virtually all agro-industries have boilers emitting CO2 that microalgae can use, and many industries could benefit from anaerobic digestion to reclaim energy from the effluents before microalgal cultivation, the use of gaseous effluents is also discussed in the text.

    Abstract: Sugarcane ethanol production generates about 360 billion liters of vinasse, a liquid effluent with an average chemical oxygen demand of 46,000 mg/L. Vinasse still contains about 11% of the original energy from sugarcane juice, but this chemical energy is diluted. This residue, usually discarded or applied in fertigation, is a suitable substrate for anaerobic digestion (AD). Although the technology is not yet widespread—only 3% of bioethanol plants used it in Brazil in the past, most discontinuing the process—the research continues. With a biomethane potential ranging from 215 to 324 L of methane produced by kilogram of organic matter in vinasse, AD could improve the energy output of sugarcane biorefineries. At the same time, the residual digestate could still be used as an agricultural amendment or for microalgal production for further stream valorization. This review presents the current technology for ethanol production from sugarcane and describes the state of the art in vinasse AD, including technological trends, through a recent patent evaluation. It also appraises the integration of vinasse AD in an ideal sugarcane biorefinery approach. It finally discusses bottlenecks and presents possible directions for technology development and widespread adoption of this simple yet powerful approach for bioresource recovery.

    Abstract: The prevalence of prediabetes in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is two to three times higher than that of the general population. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an intervention in guiding low-income people living with HIV (PLWH) and prediabetes through the stages of change and promote self-efficacy of positive health behavior. Methods: A 6- month randomized, controlled intervention was conducted where participants (N = 38) were randomized into the intervention group (n = 20) or the control group (n = 18). The participants’ stages of change, nutrition knowledge, and self-efficacy were assessed using questionnaires. Participants were recruited in August 2017–December 2018, were HIV seropositive, had undetectable viral load, were prediabetic, and not currently receiving glucose-altering medications. Participants randomized into the intervention group received medical nutrition therapy/counseling and nutrition education; participants randomized into the control group received educational material related to nutrition, HIV, and prediabetes at baseline. Primary outcome measures were progression through the stages of change as measured by the transtheoretical (“stages of change”) model, improvements in nutrition knowledge, and self-efficacy of the participants. Results: Significant improvement in stage of behavioral change was observed in the intervention group for physical activity, fruit/vegetable intake, fiber intake as well as nutrition knowledge and self-efficacy; however, no significant changes were observed in the control group. Conclusions: A nutrition intervention was effective in promoting positive health behavior by progressing participants through the stages of behavioral change in low-income people living with HIV and prediabetes.
