    Abstract: In terms of the failure of giving considerations to both aesthetic ornamental and low-carbon function for the current disaster prevention and mitigation engineering. This study proposes the debris-disaster prevention baffles applicable to natural scenic areas which designed based on mangroves properties, to solve this problem by adopting bionic design method. The research methodology is as follows: (1) To propose a Six Elements and Ten Steps Design Method for extracting the critical bionic elements of mangrove plants that contributes to the prevention of winds and waves. (2) To construct a decision objective model based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process method (AHP). Prioritize the critical bionic design elements and build a geometric structure model. (3) To compare the disaster mitigation performance through numerical simulations, and thus select an optimal one for further studies. (4) To design the final disaster prevention product based on the above theoretical guidance, low-carbon concept, efficient protection orientation, and environment-friendly principles. This study indicates that the use of bionic design satisfies aesthetic ornamental, and low-carbon demands. The appliance of AHP avoids subjective one-sidedness in design process when considering the priority of bionic elements. The numerical simulation experiments adopted in this study aim to compare the blocking effect of different baffle models and achieve the optimization the performance in disaster prevention of traditional baffle groups. In this study, the bionic product design methodology is adopted for baffle design to solve existing aesthetic and environmental problems. The particle accumulation mass after the new baffles can be effectively reduced by 2–3 times compared to the traditional baffles. Furthermore, the new baffle is more aesthetically pleasing than the traditional ones.

    Abstract: Soil relative water content and seed plumpness have been shown to be the key factors affecting seed germination and seedling growth of rice under direct drought cropping. It remains to be determined whether seed germination and seedling growth of water-saving and drought-resistant rice (WDR) and conventional rice with the same proportion of rice seed have the same response to soil moisture changes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the seed germination and physiological characteristics of the rice cultivars Guangliangyou 1813 (GLY-1813,indica hybrid rice) and Hanyou 73 ((HY-73), WDR) with four different specific gravities (T1, T2, T3, and T4; the rice seeds were divided into four specific gravity levels by weight using saline water, the representative specific gravities were 〈 1.0, 1.0–1.1, 1.1–1.2 and 〉 1.2 kg m−3, respectively), at five soil moisture content gradients (soil relative water contents of 10–20%, 20–40%, 40–60%, 60–80%, and 80–100%), under dry direct seeding conditions. The results showed that GLY-1813 had a higher germination potential, germination and seedling emergence rates, greater root dry weight, seedling dry weight, root oxidation activity, and chlorophyll content, and lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content when the soil relative water content was 20–40% or 40–60%. Cultivar HY-73 had the highest germination rate and seedling physiological activity at 20–40% relative water content; its growth vigor was better than that of GLY-1813 at the same soil moisture level. In conclusion, the soil relative water content for seed germination of HY-73 was 20–40%, which was less than that of GLY-1813. When soil relative water content was sufficient for seed germination and growth, the higher the plumpness of the rice seed, the easier it was to resist the negative effects of an adverse growth environment.

    Abstract: Interactions between alien plants and local enemies in introduced ranges may determine plant invasion success. However, little is known about whether herbivory-induced responses are transmitted across vegetative generations of plants and whether epigenetic changes are involved during this process. In a greenhouse experiment, we examined the effects of herbivory by the generalist herbivore Spodoptera litura on the growth, physiology, biomass allocation and DNA methylation level of the invasive plant Alternanthera philoxeroides in the first- (G1), second- (G2) and third-generation (G3). We also tested the effects of root fragments with different branching orders (i.e., the primary- or secondary-root fragments of taproots) of G1 on offspring performance. Our results showed that G1 herbivory promoted the growth of the plants in G2 that sprouted from the secondary-root fragments of G1 but had a neutral or negative effect on the growth of the plants in G2 from the primary-root fragments. The growth of plants in G3 was significantly reduced by G3 herbivory but not affected by G1 herbivory. Plants in G1 exhibited a higher level of DNA methylation when they were damaged by herbivores than when they were not, while neither plants in G2 nor G3 showed herbivory-induced changes in DNA methylation. Overall, the herbivory-induced growth response within one vegetative generation may represent the rapid acclimatization of A. philoxeroides to the unpredictable generalist herbivores in the introduced ranges. Herbivory-induced trans-generational effects may be transient for clonal offspring of A. philoxeroides, which can be influenced by the branching order of taproots, but be less characterized by DNA methylation.

    Abstract: The purpose of this research was to extract and separate the compounds from frankincense, and then evaluate their anti-inflammatory effects. The isolated compound was a representative tetracyclic triterpenes of glycine structure according to 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectra, which is β-elemonic acid (β-EA). We determined the content of six different localities of frankincense; the average content of β-EA was 41.96 mg/g. The toxic effects of β-EA administration (400, 200, 100 mg/kg) for four weeks in Kunming (KM) mice were observed. Compared with the control group, the body weight of mice, the visceral coefficients and serum indicators in the β-EA groups showed no systematic variations. The anti-inflammatory effects of β-EA were evaluated in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells, xylene-induced induced ear inflammation in mice, carrageenin-induced paw edema in mice, and cotton pellet induced granuloma formation in rats. β-EA inhibited overproduction of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1), soluble TNF receptor 1 (sTNF R1), Eotaxin-2, Interleukin 10 (IL-10) and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF) in the RAW264.7 cells. Intragastric administration with β-EA (300, 200, and 100 mg/kg in mice, and 210, 140, and 70 mg/kg in rats) all produced distinct anti-inflammatory effects in vivo in a dose-dependent manner. Following treatment with β-EA (300 mg/kg, i.g.), the NO level in mice ears and PGE2 in mice paws both decreased (p 〈 0.01). In conclusion, our study indicates that β-EA could be a potential anti-inflammatory agent for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

    Abstract: Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is a novel enteric coronavirus and is becoming one of the major causative agents of diarrhea in pig herds in recent years. To date, there are no commercial vaccines or antiviral pharmaceutical agents available to control PDCoV infection. Therefore, developing a reliable strategy against PDCoV is urgently needed. In this study, to observe the antiviral activity of RNA interference (RNAi), four short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) specific to the nucleocapsid (N) gene of PDCoV were designed and tested in vitro. Of these, a double-shRNA-expression vector, designated as pSil-double-shRNA-N1, was the most effectively expressed, and the inhibition of PDCoV replication was then further evaluated in neonatal piglets. Our preliminary results reveal that plasmid-based double-shRNA-expression targeting the N gene of PDCoV can significantly protect LLC-PK1 cells and piglets from pathological lesions induced by PDCoV. Our study could benefit the investigation of the specific functions of viral genes related to PDCoV infection and offer a possible methodology of RNAi-based therapeutics for PDCoV infection.

    Abstract: Background and Objectives: Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and high bone fragility. Findings regarding the association of coffee and tea intake with osteoporosis have been inconsistent. We conducted this meta-analysis to investigate whether coffee and tea intake is associated with low bone mineral density (BMD) and high hip fracture risk. Materials and Methods: PubMed, MEDLINE, and Embase were searched for relevant studies published before 2022. Studies on the effects of coffee/tea intake on hip fracture/BMD were included in our meta-analysis, whereas those focusing on specific disease groups and those with no relevant coffee/tea intake data were excluded. We assessed mean difference (MD; for BMD) and pooled hazard ratio (HR; for hip fracture) values with 95% confidence interval (CI) values. The cohort was divided into high- and low-intake groups considering the thresholds of 1 and 2 cups/day for tea and coffee, respectively. Results: Our meta-analysis included 20 studies comprising 508,312 individuals. The pooled MD was 0.020 for coffee (95% CI, −0.003 to 0.044) and 0.039 for tea (95% CI, −0.012 to 0.09), whereas the pooled HR was 1.008 for coffee (95% CI, 0.760 to 1.337) and 0.93 for tea (95% CI, 0.84 to 1.03). Conclusions: Our meta-analysis results suggest that daily coffee or tea consumption is not associated with BMD or hip fracture risk.

    Abstract: Background: The International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) grade and positive surgical margins (PSMs) after radical prostatectomy (RP) may reflect the prognosis of prostate cancer (PCa) patients. This study aimed to investigate whether DCE-MRI parameters (i.e., Ktrans, kep, and IAUC) could predict ISUP grade and PSMs after RP. Method: Forty-five PCa patients underwent preoperative DCE-MRI. The clinical characteristics and DCE-MRI parameters of the 45 patients were compared between the low- and high-risk (i.e., ISUP grades III-V) groups and between patients with or without PSMs after RP. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the significant predictors of placement in the high-risk group and PSMs. Results: The DCE parameter Ktrans-max was significantly higher in the high-risk group than in the low-risk group (p = 0.028) and was also a significant predictor of placement in the high-risk group (odds ratio [OR] = 1.032, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.005–1.060, p = 0.021). Patients with PSMs had significantly higher prostate-specific antigen (PSA) titers, positive biopsy core percentages, Ktrans-max, kep-median, and kep-max than others (all p 〈 0.05). Of these, positive biopsy core percentage (OR = 1.035, 95% CI = 1.003–1.068, p = 0.032) and kep-max (OR = 1.078, 95% CI = 1.012–1.148, p = 0.020) were significant predictors of PSMs. Conclusion: Preoperative DCE-MRI parameters, specifically Ktrans-max and kep-max, could potentially serve as preoperative imaging biomarkers for postoperative PCa prognosis based on their predictability of PCa risk group and PSM on RP, respectively.
