    Abstract: The internal rearing environment of livestock houses has become an important issue in the last few years due to the rapid increase in meat consumption. As the number of days of heat waves increase continuously, problems caused by abnormal weather changes steadily occurred. Thus, the main goal of this study is to develop a technology that can automatically calculate heat stress for livestock by considering weather forecast data. Specifically, a web-based heat stress forecasting system for the evaluation of heat stress in broilers was developed. The field experiments were carried out at the selected broiler house to measure and analyze the external weather, the internal environment, and the ventilation flow rate of fans used in tunnel ventilation. The developed model was validated by comparing the field and simulated thermal environment values. Based on a reliable model, Land-Atmosphere Modeling Package (LAMP) weather forecast data was used to show the stress index on the internal rearing environment with a heat stress index suitable for South Korea. When the users input the farm location, structure and equipment, and rearing information, users responded after receiving heat stress from the broiler raised in a mechanically ventilated broiler house.

    Abstract: A Venlo-type greenhouse with a continuous roof vent (CR-Venlo greenhouse) was proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, South Korea (2019) for natural ventilation even during summers. It is ventilated through the buoyancy effect of the heated air using the high eave elevation. However, the CR-Venlo greenhouse was not distributed domestically, and its ventilation efficiency was not quantitatively evaluated. We aimed to analyze the natural ventilation efficiency of the greenhouse according to the eave height, using computational-fluid-dynamics. The simulation model was analyzed for hot summer conditions. The target greenhouse is ventilated only through the roof vent with all roof windows open; therefore, the air introduced through the roof window is easily exhausted. To evaluate the efficiency of ventilation, the external air entering through the roof window was calculated and evaluated. The amount of incoming air varied greatly with the location of the span and average temperature of the greenhouse; The temperature of the crop zone decreased lognormally with increasing height of the eave. Moreover, the ventilation efficiency of CR-Venlo greenhouse could be increased by improving the ventilation structure such as a shape, position or combination of roof window.

    Abstract: As the pig industry develops rapidly, various problems are increasing both inside and outside pig houses. In particular, in the case of pig houses, it is difficult to solve the main problems even if automation and mechanization are applied with Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). The air recirculation technology can be applied as a technology that can solve these typical problems in the pig industry, such as growth environment, livestock disease, odor emission, energy cost, and pig productivity. The air recirculated ventilation system (ARVS) can minimize the inflow of air from the outdoors and recycle the internal thermal energy of the pig house. The ARVS consists of (1) an air scrubber module, (2) an external air mixing module, (3) a UV cleaning module, (4) a solar heat module, and (5) an air distribution module. In this study, the growth environment of piglets was predicted using a numerical model when the ARVS was applied. Since the concept of air recirculation was used, numerous equations for predicting the internal environment should be iteratively calculated. Furthermore, it was necessary to determine the optimum condition of the modules by applying various boundary conditions. Therefore, the model was designed for numerical analysis based on the balance equations of environmental factors inside the piglet room. For each module, the module coefficient and equations were considered based on the previous studies. The analysis was conducted according to the system diagram of each module, and the growth environment inside the piglet room was evaluated according to the various environmental conditions. As a result of calculating the numerical model, the ventilation rate of 40 CMM or more was advantageous to properly maintaining the gas environment. In the summer season, it was necessary to additionally use the cooling device and dehumidifier. In the winter season, when using a heat exchanger and solar module, was more advantageous for maintaining air temperature inside the piglet room.

    Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of diagnosing periodontitis via the identification of 18 bacterial species in mouth-rinse samples. Patients (n = 110) who underwent dental examinations in the Department of Periodontology at the Veterans Health Service Medical Center between 2018 and 2019 were included. They were divided into healthy and periodontitis groups. The overall number of bacteria, and those of 18 specific bacteria, were determined via real-time polymerase chain reaction in 92 mouth-rinse samples. Differences between groups were evaluated through logistic regression after adjusting for sex, age, and smoking history. There was a significant difference in the prevalence (healthy vs. periodontitis group) of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (2.9% vs. 13.5%), Treponema denticola (42.9% vs. 69.2%), and Prevotella nigrescens (80% vs. 2.7%). Levels of Treponema denticola, Prevotella nigrescens, and Streptococcus mitis were significantly associated with severe periodontitis. We demonstrated the feasibility of detecting periopathogenic bacteria in mouth-rinse samples obtained from patients with periodontitis. As we did not comprehensively assess all periopathogenic bacteria, further studies are required to assess the potential of oral-rinsing solutions to indicate oral infection risk and the need to improve oral hygiene, and to serve as a complementary method for periodontal disease diagnosis.

    Abstract: A substantial reduction in the environmental impacts related to the construction and operation of agricultural buildings is needed to adapt to the continuing development of agriculture. The life cycle assessment (LCA) is a methodology used to quantify the environmental impact of different processes involved in the production and therefore has been increasingly applied to assess the environmental burden. However, most LCA-related research studies have focused on the overall environmental impact of the entire system without considering the energy load of the agricultural buildings. By integrating the LCA tool with other design tools such as the building energy simulation (BES), the identification of environmental hotspots and the mitigation options become possible during the design process. Thus, the objective of the paper was to identify the current integration approaches used to combine BES and LCA results to assess the environmental impact of different heating systems such as absorption heat pump (AHP) using energy from thermal effluent, electricity-powered heat pump and kerosene-powered boilers used in a conventional multi-span Korean greenhouse. The assessment result revealed that the environmental impact caused using a kerosene-powered boiler is largest in terms of the acidification potential (AP), global warming potential (GWP) and Eutrophication Potential (EP) of 1.15 × 100 kg SO2-eq, 1.13 × 102 kg CO2-eq and 1.62 × 10−1 kg PO4-eq, respectively. Detailed analysis of the result showed that the main contributor for greenhouse gas emission was caused by the type, amount and source of energy used to heat the greenhouse, which contributed to a maximum of 86.59% for case 1, 96.69% for case 2 and a maximum of 96.47% for case 3, depending on the type of greenhouse gas being considered.

    Abstract: The purpose of this study is to identify the factors related to the infection and/or colonization of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) based on clinical and microbiological data for patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). All patients admitted to medical ICU were screened for CPE on admission and weekly, and this 1:2 case–control study included patients with CPE identified by screening or clinical cultures from 2017 to 2018. The clonal relatedness was evaluated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). A total of 45 CPE patients were identified with a prevalence of 3.8%. The most frequent organism was Klebsiella pneumoniae (69%) and the carbapenemases belonged to the class A Klebsiella pneumoniae Carbapenemase (KPC-2) (87%), class B New Delhi Metallo-β-lactamase (NDM) (11%), and Imipenemase (IMP-1) (2%) strains. The PFGE profiles showed two large clustered groups of KPC-2-producing K. pneumoniae. In the multivariate analysis, pneumonia/chronic pulmonary disease, previous fluoroquinolone use, and previous use of nasogastric tube were the significant risk factors for CPE infection or colonization in ICU-admitted patients. Critical illness and underlying medical conditions such as pneumonia/chronic pulmonary disease, antimicrobial selective pressure, and the use of a medical device are identified as risk factors for CPE infection or colonization in ICU. Person to person transmission also contributed.

    Abstract: Bcl-2-interacting cell death suppressor (BIS), also called BAG3, plays a role in physiological functions such as anti-apoptosis, cell proliferation, autophagy, and senescence. Whole-body Bis-knockout (KO) mice exhibit early lethality accompanied by abnormalities in cardiac and skeletal muscles, suggesting the critical role of BIS in these muscles. In this study, we generated skeletal muscle-specific Bis-knockout (Bis-SMKO) mice for the first time. Bis-SMKO mice exhibit growth retardation, kyphosis, a lack of peripheral fat, and respiratory failure, ultimately leading to early death. Regenerating fibers and increased intensity in cleaved PARP1 immunostaining were observed in the diaphragm of Bis-SMKO mice, indicating considerable muscle degeneration. Through electron microscopy analysis, we observed myofibrillar disruption, degenerated mitochondria, and autophagic vacuoles in the Bis-SMKO diaphragm. Specifically, autophagy was impaired, and heat shock proteins (HSPs), such as HSPB5 and HSP70, and z-disk proteins, including filamin C and desmin, accumulated in Bis-SMKO skeletal muscles. We also found metabolic impairments, including decreased ATP levels and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine kinase (CK) activities in the diaphragm of Bis-SMKO mice. Our findings highlight that BIS is critical for protein homeostasis and energy metabolism in skeletal muscles, suggesting that Bis-SMKO mice could be used as a therapeutic strategy for myopathies and to elucidate the molecular function of BIS in skeletal muscle physiology.

    Abstract: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells do not contain various receptors for targeted treatment, a reason behind the poor prognosis of this disease. In this study, biocompatible theranostic erythrocyte-derived nanoparticles (EDNs) were developed and evaluated for effective early diagnosis and treatment of TNBC. The anti-cancer drug, doxorubicin (DOX), was encapsulated into the EDNs and diagnostic quantum dots (QDs) were incorporated into the lipid bilayers of EDNs for tumor bio-imaging. Then, anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) antibody molecules were conjugated to the surface of EDNs for TNBC targeting (iEDNs). According to the confocal microscopic analyses and biodistribution assay, iEDNs showed a higher accumulation in EGFR-positive MDA-MB-231 cancers in vitro as well as in vivo, compared to untargeted EDNs. iEDNs containing doxorubicin (iEDNs-DOX) showed a stronger inhibition of target tumor growth than untargeted ones. The resulting anti-EGFR iEDNs exhibited strong biocompatibility, prolonged blood circulation, and efficient targeting of TNBC in mice. Therefore, iEDNs may be used as potential TNBC-targeted co-delivery systems for therapeutics and diagnostics.

    Abstract: In this work, we used life cycle assessment (LCA) to determine the environmental impact of fresh tomato production using a conventional greenhouse (GH) located in a rural area versus a rooftop greenhouse (RTG) located in an urban area in South Korea. The heating and cooling loads were modeled for a period of 12 months using the simulation software TRNSYS. The comparative LCA was then performed for the GH and RTG using these data. It was found that 19% less energy is required for heating an RTG and 38% more energy is used for cooling compared with a GH. Nevertheless, the total energy load reduction for the RTG is 13%. This decreased energy consumption is due to smaller heat losses of the RTG during the colder months. The decreased energy load, combined with the elimination of transportation, storage, and handling losses during the distribution stage, resulted in 43% less global warming potential, 45% less cumulative energy demand and abiotic depletion, 37% less photochemical oxidation and acidification, and 27% less eutrophication for the RTG. Further studies with seasonal yield data, energy sources, and integrated energy flows are expected to provide a better understanding of the advantages of urban farming in this region.

    Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the environmental impact and human health risks associated with toxic trace element (TTE) exposure in the abandoned Yaro Mine, Korea. Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were assessed separately for adults and children. Among the various pathways, the rate of TTE intake from the ingestion of groundwater was highest, followed in descending order by crop consumption, soil ingestion, and soil contact. The carcinogenic risk from the ingestion of groundwater was highest, followed by crop consumption and ingestion of contaminated surface soil. The non-carcinogenic risk from the ingestion of groundwater was highest (53.57% of the total non-carcinogenic risk), followed by crop intake (38.53%) and surface soil ingestion (4.80%). The risk assessment revealed that contaminated soil around Yaro mine posed a high risk to the health of inhabitants, mainly via groundwater ingestion and crop consumption. Reclamation measures should include methods of disrupting the high-risk routes between the source and recipient. Stabilization and covering techniques are promising options for reducing the hazard (i.e., exposure to the bioavailable fraction of TTE) and creating a chemical or physicochemical barrier to the potential migration pathways.
