    Abstract: Numerical study on flow separation control is conducted for a stalled airfoil with steady-blowing jet. Stall conditions relevant to a rotorcraft are of interest here. Both static and dynamic stalls are simulated with solving compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. It is expected that a jet flow, if it is applied properly, provides additional momentum in the boundary layer which is susceptible to flow separation at high angles of attack. The jet angle can influence on the augmentation of the flow momentum in the boundary layer which helps to delay or suppress the stall. Two distinct jet angles are selected to investigate the impact of the jet angle on the control authority. A tangential jet with a shallow jet angle to the surface is able to provide the additional momentum to the flow, whereas a chord-normal jet with a large jet angle simply averts the external flow. The tangential jet reduces the shape factor of the boundary layer, lowering the susceptibility to the flow separation and delaying both the static and dynamic stalls.

    Abstract: A water droplet dispensed on a superhydrophobic ratchet surface is formed into an asymmetric shape, which creates a Laplace pressure gradient due to the contact angle difference between two sides. This work presents a magnetically actuated superhydrophobic ratchet surface composed of nanostructured black silicon strips on elastomer ridges. Uniformly magnetized NdFeB layers sputtered under the black silicon strips enable an external magnetic field to tilt the black silicon strips and form a superhydrophobic ratchet surface. Due to the dynamically controllable Laplace pressure gradient, a water droplet on the reported ratchet surface experiences different forces on two sides, which are explored in this work. Here, the detailed fabrication procedure and the related magnetomechanical model are provided. In addition, the resultant asymmetric spreading of a water droplet is studied. Finally, droplet impact characteristics are investigated in three different behaviors of deposition, rebound, and penetration depending on the impact speed. The findings in this work are exploitable for further droplet manipulation studies based on a dynamically controllable superhydrophobic ratchet surface.

    Abstract: As smart cities become a global topic, interest in smart mobility, the core of smart cities, is also growing. The technology that comes closest to general users is “autonomous driving”. In particular, the successful market entry and establishment of some private companies proved that “autonomous driving” is not technology of the future but imminent reality. However, safety in autonomous vehicles that rely on sensors instead of the driver’s five senses has been the focus of attention from the beginning and continues to be so. In this study, we attempted to counter this interest. Based on the actual data of thirty traffic accidents, assuming the AEBS (Autonomous Emergency Braking System) was installed to assist the driver in safe driving, it was reinterpreted through simulation to see what changes occurred in the accident. In the computer program, PC-Crash, the results were first analyzed through simulation using Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Program)’s AEBS test standards. Subsequently, the other variables in the AEBS were controlled and the accident was reinterpreted by changing only the angle of the radar detection sensor. As a result, it was confirmed that a total of 27 accidents out of thirty accidents could have been prevented with the AEBS. In addition, it proved that the crash avoidance rate of vehicles gradually increased as the radar angle increased.
