    Abstract: FUSE binding protein 1 (Fubp1), a regulator of the c-Myc transcription factor and a DNA/RNA-binding protein, plays important roles in the regulation of gene transcription and cellular physiology. In this study, to reveal the precise developmental function of Fubp1, we examined the detailed expression pattern and developmental function of Fubp1 during tooth morphogenesis by RT-qPCR, in situ hybridization, and knock-down study using in vitro organ cultivation methods. In embryogenesis, Fubp1 is obviously expressed in the enamel organ and condensed mesenchyme, known to be important for proper tooth formation. Knocking down Fubp1 at E14 for two days, showed the altered expression patterns of tooth development related signalling molecules, including Bmps and Fgf4. In addition, transient knock-down of Fubp1 at E14 revealed changes in the localization patterns of c-Myc and cell proliferation in epithelium and mesenchyme, related with altered tooth morphogenesis. These results also showed the decreased amelogenin and dentin sialophosphoprotein expressions and disrupted enamel rod and interrod formation in one- and three-week renal transplanted teeth respectively. Thus, our results suggested that Fubp1 plays a modulating role during dentinogenesis and amelogenesis by regulating the expression pattern of signalling molecules to achieve the proper structural formation of hard tissue matrices and crown morphogenesis in mice molar development.

    Abstract: Helicobacter pylori infections are a major cause of gastrointestinal disorders, including gastric ulcers, gastritis, and gastric cancer. Triple therapy, using two antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor, is recommended for the treatment of H. pylori infections. However, antibiotic resistance in H. pylori is an emerging issue. Bamboo salt, a traditional Korean salt made by baking solar sea salt in bamboo barrels, can ameliorate the symptoms of various gastrointestinal diseases. Herein, we compared the anti-H. pylori activity of triple therapy (clarithromycin, metronidazole, and omeprazole), solar salt, and bamboo salt in vivo as a preliminary study. Four-week-old C57BL/6 male mice were inoculated for eight weeks with the H. pylori Sydney Strain 1 (SS-1) and orally administered triple therapy drugs and salts for five days. The transcript levels of the H. pylori-expressed gene CagA and inflammatory cytokines Tnfα and Il-1β significantly decreased in the bamboo salt treated mice than those in the H. pylori-infected control group. This effect was further enhanced by using triple therapy and bamboo salt together. Solar salt caused modest inhibition of H. pylori-induced inflammation. We also demonstrated the synergistic effects of bamboo salt and triple therapy against H. pylori. Thus, bamboo salt may be a potential candidate agent against the treatment of H. pylori-associated gastritis.

    Abstract: Beryllium oxide (BeO) is considered to be an attractive alternative material for use in future industries in areas such as semiconductors, spacecraft, aircraft, and rocket technologies due to its high bandgap energy, useful melting point, good thermal conductivity, and dielectric constants. In this context, our approach is a novel method to produce BeO thin films based on a two-step spin-coating innovation of the conventional powder synthesis method. The surface morphology and the crystal structure of BeO thin films were observed to be dependent on the citric acid/beryllium sulfate ratio and the sintering temperature, respectively. To characterize the BeO films, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was conducted for an elemental analysis. Furthermore, the bandgap of the BeO thin films was determined by reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy. Finally, the leakage current of a planar metal–insulator–metal device consisting of Au/Ti/BeO thin film/Ti/Au electrodes was determined to be below the nA range over the linear voltage sweeping range of −20 V to +20 V. These results can assist researchers in the areas of morphology control strategies, phase transfer theories, and applications that utilize BeO thin film manufactured by a solution process.

    Abstract: Airway wall thickening (AWT) plays an important pathophysiological role in airway diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). There are only a few studies on the genetic components contributing to AWT in the Korean population. This study aimed to identify AWT-related single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) using a genome-wide association study (GWAS). We performed GWAS for AWT using the CODA and KUCOPD cohorts. Thereafter, a meta-analysis was performed. Airway wall thickness was measured using automatic segmentation software. The AWT at an internal perimeter of 10 mm (AWT-Pi10) was calculated by the square root of the theoretical airway wall area using the full-width-half-maximum method. We identified a significant SNP (rs11648772, p = 1.41 × 10−8) located in LINC02127, near SALL1. This gene is involved in the inhibition of epithelial–mesenchymal transition in glial cells, and it affects bronchial wall depression in COPD patients. Additionally, we identified other SNPs (rs11970854, p = 1.92 × 10−6; rs16920168, p = 5.29 × 10−6) involved in airway inflammation and proliferation and found that AWT is influenced by these genetic variants. Our study helps identify the genetic cause of COPD in an Asian population and provides a potential basis for treatment.

    Abstract: Antioxidants are used to prevent the oxidation of foods. When used for food additive purposes, the dosage should be regulated and the functionality evaluated to ensure stability. In this study, we performed a method validation for the quantitative analysis of rosemary extract residues and evaluated the antioxidant activity of rosemary extract in food matrices. The validated method was able to determine rosemary extract under the optimized high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array (HPLC-PDA) conditions. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity was evaluated by peroxide value, acid value, and in terms of the residual antioxidant levels in lard oil. For HPLC-PDA analysis, the limit of detection and quantification of rosemary extracts was ranged from 0.22 to 1.73 μg/mL, 0.66 to 5.23 μg/mL and the recoveries of the rosemary extracts ranged from 70.6 to 114.0%, with relative standard deviations of between 0.2% and 3.8%. In terms of antioxidant activity, carnosic acid performed better than carnosol. Furthermore, by evaluation of the residual antioxidant level using HPLC, we found that carnosic acid is more stable in lard oil than carnosol. These results indicate that rosemary extract can be used as an antioxidant and that the analytical method is suitable for the determination of rosemary extract in various food samples.

    Abstract: Glioblastoma is an actively growing and aggressive brain tumor with a high propensity of recurrence. Although the surgical removal of tumor mass is the primary therapeutic option against glioblastoma, supportive pharmacotherapy is highly essential due to incredibly infiltrative characteristic of glioblastoma. Temozolomide, an FDA-approved alkylating agent, has been used as a first-line standard pharmacological approach, but several evident limitations were repeatedly reported. Despite additional therapeutic options suggested, there are no medications that successfully prevent a recurrence of glioblastoma and increase the five-year survival rate. In this study, we tested the possibility that finasteride has the potential to be developed as an anti-glioblastoma drug. Finasteride, an FDA-approved medication for the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia and androgenic alopecia, is already known to pass through the blood–brain barrier and possess antiproliferative activity of prostate epithelial cells. We showed that finasteride inhibited the maintenance of glioma stem-like cells and repressed the proliferation of glioblastoma. Mechanistically, finasteride lowered intracellular ROS level by upregulating antioxidant genes, which contributed to inefficient β-catenin accumulation. Downregulated β-catenin resulted in the reduction in stemness and cell growth in glioblastoma.

    Abstract: Aging is characterized by a progressive decline or loss of physiological functions, leading to increased susceptibility to disease or death. Several aging hallmarks, including genomic instability, cellular senescence, and mitochondrial dysfunction, have been suggested, which often lead to the numerous aging disorders. The periodontium, a complex structure surrounding and supporting the teeth, is composed of the gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. Supportive and protective roles of the periodontium are very critical to sustain life, but the periodontium undergoes morphological and physiological changes with age. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of molecular and cellular physiological changes in the periodontium, by focusing on soft tissues including gingiva and periodontal ligament.

    Abstract: The discovery of novel and critical genes implicated in malignant development is a topic of high interest in cancer research. Intriguingly, a group of genes named “double-agent” genes were reported to have both oncogenic and tumor-suppressive functions. To date, less than 100 “double-agent” genes have been documented. Fubp1 is a master transcriptional regulator of a subset of genes by interacting with a far upstream element (FUSE). Mounting evidence has collectively demonstrated both the oncogenic and tumor suppressive roles of Fubp1 and the debate regarding its roles in tumorigenesis has been around for several years. Therefore, the detailed molecular mechanisms of Fubp1 need to be determined in each context. In the present study, we showed that the Fubp1 protein level was enriched in the S phase and we identified that Fubp1 deficiency altered cell cycle progression, especially in the S phase, by downregulating the mRNA expression levels of Ccna genes encoding cyclin A. Although this Fubp1-cyclin A axis appears to exist in several types of tumors, Fubp1 showed heterogeneous expression patterns among various cancer tissues, suggesting it exhibits multiple and complicated functions in cancer development. In addition, we showed that Fubp1 deficiency confers survival advantages to cells against metabolic stress and anti-cancer drugs, suggesting that Fubp1 may play both positive and negative roles in malignant development.

    Abstract: Non-invasive anthropometric measurement methods such as those for measuring height and weight are crucial in pediatric patients. However, research focusing on the association between the type of dietary pattern and handgrip strength and handgrip-to-weight ratio in adolescents has not been carried out yet. This cross-sectional analysis of the 2014–2017 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey assessed 2327 adolescents (aged 10–18 years) who had their handgrip strength measured and analyzed its association with dietary pattern. The clusters were examined for nutritional values, and the ready-to-eat, balanced, and Western-style fast-food clusters were ultimately generated. Overall, 85.6% of the participants were assigned to a ready-to-eat dietary pattern, 9.3% to a Western-style fast-food dietary pattern, and 5.1% to a balanced dietary pattern. Compared with the participants following a balanced dietary pattern, those following a ready-to-eat dietary pattern were shown to have a significantly lower handgrip strength and handgrip-to-weight ratio. Decreased handgrip strength and handgrip-to-weight ratio values in participants following ready-to-eat dietary patterns indicate a diffuse problem in adolescents’ health and possibly imply an association between reduced muscle quality and dietary pattern. Therefore, the overall environmental factors potentially inducing such unhealthy dietary preferences should be investigated, and appropriate lifestyle changes in Korean adolescents should be encouraged.

    Abstract: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-derived materials have been used for several applications, such as hydrogen storage and separation, catalysis, and drug delivery, owing to them having a significantly large surface area and open pore structure. In recent years, MOFs have also been applied to thin-film solar cells, and attractive results have been obtained. In perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the MOF materials are used in the form of an additive for electron and hole transport layers, interlayer, and hybrid perovskite/MOF. MOFs have the potential to be used as a material for obtaining PSCs with high efficiency and stability. In this study, we briefly explain the synthesis of MOFs and the performance of organic and dye-sensitized solar cells with MOFs. Furthermore, we provide a detailed overview on the performance of the most recently reported PSCs using MOFs.
