Kurzfassung: Background: This study aimed to investigate the associations between sex and the relative effect of rhythm control over rate control in patients with atrial fibrillation. Methods: We used the National Health Insurance Service database to select patients treated for atrial fibrillation within one year after diagnosis. The primary composite outcome comprised cardiovascular death, ischemic stroke, heart failure hospitalization, or acute myocardial infarction. Results: During the mean follow-up (4.9 ± 3.2 years), the benefit of rhythm control over rate control on the primary composite outcome became statistically insignificant after 3 months from atrial fibrillation diagnosis in women while remained steadily until 12 months in men. The risk of primary composite outcome for rhythm control was lower than that for rate control in both sexes if it was initiated within 6 months (men: HR = 0.86, 95%CI = 0.79–0.94; women: HR = 0.85, 95%CI = 0.78–0.93; P for interaction = 0.844). However, there was significant interaction between sex and the relative effect of rhythm control if it was initiated after 6 months (men: HR = 0.72, 95%CI = 0.52–0.99; women: HR = 1.32, 95%CI = 0.92–1.88; P for interaction = 0.018). Conclusion: Rhythm control resulted in lower risk of primary composite outcome than rate control in both sexes; however, the treatment initiation at an earlier stage might be considered in women.

Kurzfassung: Graphene-based membranes are promising candidates for efficient organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) processes because of their unique structural characteristics, such as mechanical/chemical stability and precise molecular sieving. Recently, to improve organic solvent permeance and selectivity, nanopores have been fabricated on graphene planes via chemical and physical methods. The nanopores serve as an additional channel for facilitating ultrafast solvent permeation while filtering organic molecules by size exclusion. This review summarizes the recent developments in nanoporous graphene (NG)-based membranes for OSN applications. The membranes are categorized depending on the membrane structure: single-layer NG, multilayer NG, and graphene-based composite membranes hybridized with other porous materials. Techniques for nanopore generation on graphene, as well as the challenges faced and the perspectives required for the commercialization of NG membranes, are also discussed.

Kurzfassung: Clinical outcomes of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) can be improved by an integrated care approach. We analyzed whether adherence with the AF Better Care (ABC) pathway for integrated care management would reduce the risk of dementia in a nationwide AF cohort. Using the National Health Insurance Service database of Korea, 228,026 non-valvular AF patients were retrospectively evaluated between 2005 and 2015. Patients meeting all criteria of the ABC pathway were classified as the “ABC” group and those not classified as the “non-ABC” group. During a median (25th, 75th percentiles) follow-up of 6.0 (3.3, 9.5) years, the ABC group had lower rates and risk of overall dementia (0.17 vs. 1.11 per 100 person-years, p 〈 0.001; hazard ratio (HR) 0.80; 95% CI 0.73–0.87) and both Alzheimer’s (HR 0.79, 95% CI 0.71–0.88) and vascular dementia (HR 0.76, 95% CI 0.59–0.98) than the non-ABC group. The stratified analysis showed that the ABC pathway reduced the risk of dementia regardless of sex, comorbidities, and in patients with high stroke risk. Adherence with the ABC pathway is associated with a reduced risk of dementia in AF patients. Due to the high medical burden of AF, it is necessary to implement integrated AF management to reduce the risk of dementia.

Kurzfassung: Intensive blood pressure (BP) lowering in patients with hypertension at increased risk of cardiovascular disease has been associated with a lowered risk of incident atrial fibrillation (AF). It is uncertain whether maintaining the optimal BP levels can prevent AF in the general elderly population. We included 115,866 participants without AF in the Korea National Health Insurance Service-Senior (≥60 years) cohort from 2002 to 2013. We compared the influence of BP on the occurrence of new-onset AF between octogenarians (≥80 years) and non-octogenarians ( 〈 80 years) subjects. With up to 6.7 ± 1.7 years of follow-up, 4393 incident AF cases occurred. After multivariable adjustment for potentially confounding clinical covariates, the risk of AF in non-octogenarians was significantly higher in subjects with BP levels of 〈 120/ 〈 80 and ≥140/90 mm Hg, with hazard ratios of 1.15 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.03–1.28; p 〈 0.001) and 1.14 (95% CI, 1.04–1.26; p 〈 0.001), compared to the optimal BP levels (120–129/ 〈 80 mm Hg). In octogenarians, the optimal BP range was 130–139/80–89 mm Hg, higher than in non-octogenarians. A U-shaped relationship for the development of incident AF was evident in non-octogenarians, and BP levels of 120–129/ 〈 80 mm Hg were associated the lowest risk of incident AF. Compared to non-octogenarians, the lowest risk of AF was associated with higher BP levels of 130–139/80–89 mm Hg amongst octogenarians.

Kurzfassung: A critical issue that needs to be addressed for wider utilization of hydrogen as fuel is protection against hydrogen embrittlement during cryogenic storage as it weakens the microstructure bonding force of metals through hydrogen penetration. Austenitic stainless steel, which is usually used in cryogenic vessels and is well known for its high hydrogen resistance at room temperature, has also been reported to be vulnerable to hydrogen embrittlement under cryogenic temperatures. In addition, because large storage vessels are operated over a wide range of temperatures, material behavior at various temperature conditions should also be considered. Therefore, in the present study, hydrogen charging of austenitic stainless steel was performed under various temperature conditions for carrying out prestrain and tensile tests. A decrease in the tensile strength and elongation and an increase in the yield strength were observed in all cases. In particular, the case of 20% prestrain at cryogenic temperature followed by tensile test at room temperature after hydrogen charging showed fracture in the elastic region. The hydrogen index was evaluated from the perspective of elongation and reduction in area, which are factors that indicate the degree of ductility. The aforementioned case showed the most severe results, while non-prestraining followed by tensile tests at room temperature was the least effected by hydrogen. In addition, the effect of strain-induced martensite on hydrogen embrittlement was analyzed using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD). It was observed that the higher is the prestrain at cryogenic temperatures, the greater is the volume fraction of α’ martensite, which leads to hydrogen embrittlement. The edges and center of the fracture surface were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hydrogen-charged specimens exhibited brittle fractures at the edges and ductile fractures at the center. The more severe the embrittlement, the more were the number of intergranular fractures and microdimples observed at the edges.

Kurzfassung: Silicon is an attractive anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its natural abundance and excellent theoretical energy density. However, Si-based electrodes are difficult to commercialize because of their significant volume changes during lithiation that can result in mechanical damage. To overcome this limitation, we synthesized an eco-friendly water-soluble polyimide (W-PI) precursor, poly(amic acid) salt (W-PAmAS), as a binder for Si anodes via a simple one-step process using water as a solvent. Using the W-PAmAS binder, a composite Si electrode was achieved by low-temperature processing at 150 °C. The adhesion between the electrode components was further enhanced by introducing 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid, which contains free carboxylic acid (–COOH) groups in the W-PAmAS backbone. The –COOH of the W-PI binder chemically interacts with the surface of Si nanoparticles (SiNPs) by forming ester bonds, which efficiently bond the SiNPs, even during severe volume changes. The Si anode with W-PI binder showed improved electrochemical performance with a high capacity of 2061 mAh g−1 and excellent cyclability of 1883 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 1200 mA g−1. Therefore, W-PI can be used as a highly effective polymeric binder in Si-based high-capacity LIBs.

Kurzfassung: Despite the harmful effect on health, e-cigarette and hookah smoking in youth in the U.S. has increased. Developing tailored e-cigarette and hookah cessation programs for youth is imperative. The aim of this study was to identify predictor variables such as social, mental, and environmental determinants that cause nicotine addiction in youth e-cigarette or hookah users and build nicotine addiction prediction models using machine learning algorithms. A total of 6511 participants were identified as ever having used e-cigarettes or hookah from the National Youth Tobacco Survey (2019) datasets. Prediction models were built by Random Forest with ReliefF and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO). ReliefF identified important predictor variables, and the Davies–Bouldin clustering evaluation index selected the optimal number of predictors for Random Forest. A total of 193 predictor variables were included in the final analysis. Performance of prediction models was measured by Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Confusion Matrix. The results suggested high performance of prediction. Identified predictor variables were aligned with previous research. The noble predictors found, such as ‘witnessed e-cigarette use in their household’ and ‘perception of their tobacco use’, could be used in public awareness or targeted e-cigarette and hookah youth education and for policymakers.

Kurzfassung: The use of NF3 is significantly increasing every year. However, NF3 is a greenhouse gas with a very high global warming potential. Therefore, the development of a material to replace NF3 is required. F3NO is considered a potential replacement to NF3. In this study, the characteristics and cleaning performance of the F3NO plasma to replace the greenhouse gas NF3 were examined. Etching of SiO2 thin films was performed, the DC offset of the plasma of both gases (i.e., NF3 and F3NO) was analyzed, and a residual gas analysis was performed. Based on the analysis results, the characteristics of the F3NO plasma were studied, and the SiO2 etch rates of the NF3 and F3NO plasmas were compared. The results show that the etch rates of the two gases have a difference of 95% on average, and therefore, the cleaning performance of the F3NO plasma was demonstrated, and the potential benefit of replacing NF3 with F3NO was confirmed.

Kurzfassung: Previous cognitive training games for stroke survivors required the close supervision of therapists. We aim to demonstrate the preliminary therapeutic effectiveness of Neuro-World, serious mobile games for cognitive training, in chronic stroke survivors with mild-to-moderate cognitive impairment without therapist supervision. For that, we conducted a randomized, controlled clinical trial at a single long-term care rehabilitation center with 50 stroke survivors in the chronic stage with mild-to-moderate cognitive impairment. Participants were randomized to standard medical care (n = 25) or standard medical care plus administration of Neuro-World (n = 25) over 12 weeks. A two-way mixed model ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc tests identified significant differences in outcomes between the experimental and the control groups at post-intervention but not at baseline. Within the experimental group, there were statistically significant improvements in all the outcomes except for the language category of the Mini-Mental State Examination and Digit Forward Span. The improvements were clinically significant for the total Mini-Mental State Examination, Digit Forward Span, and Digit Backward Span. Within the control group, there were no improvements in any of the outcomes. The practice of Neuro-World led to significant improvements in cognitive function and marginal mitigation of depressive symptoms in chronic stroke survivors with mild-to-moderate cognitive impairment.

Kurzfassung: Recently, high-resolution patterned metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have gained considerable attention for enhanced gas sensing performance due to their polycrystalline nature, ultrasmall grain size (~5 nm), patternable properties, and high surface-to-volume ratio. Herein, we significantly enhanced the sensing performance of that patterned MOS by galvanic replacement, which allows for selective functionalization on ultrathin Cu2O nanopatterns. Based on the reduction potential energy difference between the base channel material (Cu2O) and the decorated metal ion (Pt2+), Pt could be selectively and precisely decorated onto the desired area of the Cu2O nanochannel array. Overall, the Pt-decorated Cu2O exhibited 11-fold higher NO2 (100 ppm) sensing sensitivity as compared to the non-decorated sensing channel, the while the channel device with excessive Pt doping showed complete loss of sensing properties.
