    Abstract: Gait disturbance is a prototypical feature of Parkinson’s disease (PD), and the quantification of gait using wearable sensors is promising. This study aimed to identify gait impairment in the early and progressive stages of PD according to the Hoehn and Yahr (H–Y) scale. A total of 138 PD patients and 56 healthy controls (HCs) were included in our research. We collected gait parameters using the JiBuEn gait-analysis system. For spatiotemporal gait parameters and kinematic gait parameters, we observed significant differences in stride length (SL), gait velocity, the variability of SL, heel strike angle, and the range of motion (ROM) of the ankle, knee, and hip joints between HCs and PD patients in H–Y Ⅰ-Ⅱ. The changes worsened with the progression of PD. The differences in the asymmetry index of the SL and ROM of the hip were found between HCs and patients in H–Y Ⅳ. Additionally, these gait parameters were significantly associated with Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale and Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire-39. This study demonstrated that gait impairment occurs in the early stage of PD and deteriorates with the progression of the disease. The gait parameters mentioned above may help to detect PD earlier and assess the progression of PD.

    Abstract: The advantages of low cost, high theoretical capacity, and dependable safety of aqueous zinc ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) enable their promising use in flexible and wearable energy storage devices. However, achieving extended cycling stability in ZHSCs is still challenged by the limited availability of carbon cathode materials that can effectively pair with zinc anode materials. Here, we report a method for synthesising heteroatom-doped carbon nanofibers using electrostatic spinning and metal-organic frameworks (specifically ZIF-8). Assembled Zn//ZPCNF-1.5 ZHSCs exhibited 193 mA h g−1 specific capacity at 1 A g−1 and 162.6 Wh kg−1 energy density at 841.2 kW kg−1. Additionally, the device showed an ultra-long cycle life, maintaining 98% capacity after 20,000 cycles. Experimental analysis revealed an increase in the number of pores and active sites after adding ZIF-8 to the precursor. Furthermore, N doping effectively enhanced Zn2+ ions chemical adsorption and improved Zn-ion storage performance. This work provides a feasible design strategy to enhance ZHSC energy storage capability for practical applications.

    Abstract: Five novel bis-tridentate Ir(III) complexes (Ir-1–Ir-5) incorporating versatile N^N^C ligands and a N^C^N ligand (1,3-di(2-pyridyl)-4,6-dimethylbenzene) were synthesized. With the combination of experimental and theoretical methods, their steady and transient state characteristics were researched scientifically. The UV-visible absorption spectra show that the broadband charge transfer absorbance of those bis-tridentate Ir(III) complexes can reach 550 nm, all of these complexes reveal the long-lasting phosphorescent emission. Because the excited-state absorption is more powerful than the ground-state absorption, a sturdy reverse saturable absorption (RSA) process can ensue in the visible and near-infrared regions when the complexes are exposed to a 532 nm laser. Therefore, the optical power limiting (OPL) effect follows the trend: Ir-5 〉 Ir-4 ≈ Ir-3 〉 Ir-2 〉 Ir-1. Generally speaking, the expansion of π-conjugation and the introduction of electron donating/withdrawing groups on the N^N^C ligand could effectively elevate the OPL effect. Therefore, these octahedral bis-tridentate Ir(III) complexes might be exploited as potential OPL materials.

    Abstract: l-arginine (l-Arg) has been reported to possess a wide range of functions, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and anti-apoptosis. However, the role of l-Arg in LPS-induced muscle injury and its potential protective mechanism has not been well elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the effects of l-Arg on the LPS-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis in differentiated C2C12 myotube cells. Our results demonstrated that myotube cells treated with 0.2 mg/mL LPS significantly decreased cell viability. l-Arg treatment significantly suppressed LPS induced ROS accumulation and cell apoptosis. Furthermore, l-Arg improved antioxidant-related enzymes’ activities; increased antioxidant ability via Akt-Nrf2 signaling pathway; maintained the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP); and enhanced FOXO3a expression, leading to a decrease in the mitochondrial-associated apoptotic proteins. In addition, l-Arg exposure dramatically increased the mRNA and protein expressions of SIRT1. The cytoprotective effect of l-Arg was restricted by the SIRT1 inhibitor EX527, which led to an increase in ROS level, apoptosis rate, and decreased cell MMP. The results also demonstrated that EX527 treatment significantly eliminated the effect of l-Arg on LPS-induced oxidative damage and mitochondria-mediated cell apoptosis. Our findings revealed that l-Arg could be used as a potential nutraceutical in reducing muscle injury via regulating SIRT1-Akt-Nrf2 and SIRT1-FOXO3a-mitochondria apoptosis signaling pathways.

    Abstract: Harmful cyanobacterial blooms disrupt aquatic ecosystem processes and biological functions. However, studies focusing on the effect of cyanobacterial blooms on the functional diversity of consumers are still insufficient. To examine the interactions of cyanobacterial blooms and the diversity and composition of metazooplankton, we investigated the variation in metazooplankton and their driven variables during the cyanobacterial bloom and non-bloom periods in 2020 and 2021 in Lake Xingkai. We found that cyanobacterial blooms reduced the metazooplankton species diversity but increased their biomass, functional dispersion, and functional evenness. Generalized additive mixed model results revealed that cyanobacteria showed different effects on metazooplankton biodiversity and functional diversity during the bloom and non-bloom periods. Variance partitioning analysis indicated that cyanobacteria, physicochemical variables, and temporal variation explained 15.93% of the variation in metazooplankton during the bloom period and 20.27% during the non-bloom periods. Notably, cyanobacteria during the bloom period explained more variations in metazooplankton composition than those during the non-bloom period. Our results suggest that cyanobacterial blooms significantly impact the functional diversity and community composition of metazooplankton. Physicochemical and spatiotemporal factors may mask the effects of cyanobacteria on metazooplankton. Our findings may improve the understanding of the dynamics and responses of metazooplankton communities to environmental changes and cyanobacterial blooms disturbances and enhance our ability to assess the effectiveness of aquatic ecosystem restoration and eutrophication management.

    Abstract: Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (A. pleuropneumoniae) causes porcine pleuropneumonia that seriously endangers pig’s health. Adh, located in the head region of trimeric autotransporter adhesion of A. pleuropneumoniae, affects bacterial adhesion and pathogenicity. However, how Adh mediates A. pleuropneumoniae immune invasion is still unclear. Here, we established the A. pleuropneumoniae strain L20 or L20 ΔAdh-infected porcine alveolar macrophages (PAM) model, and applied protein overexpression, RNA interference, qRT-PCR, Western blot and immunoflourescence techniques to dissect the effects of Adh on PAM during A. pleuropneumoniae infection. We found that Adh could increase the A. pleuropneumoniae adhesion and intracellular survival in PAM. Gene chip analysis of piglet lungs further showed that Adh significantly induced cation transport regulatory-like protein 2 (CHAC2) expression, whose overexpression suppressed the phagocytic capacity of PAM. Furthermore, CHAC2 overexpression dramatically increased glutathione (GSH) expression, decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS), and promoted A. pleuropneumoniae survival in PAM, while the knockdown of CHAC2 reversed these phenomena. Meanwhile, CHAC2 silence activated the NOD1/NF-κB pathway, resulting in an increase in IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α expression, whereas this effect was weakened by CHAC2 overexpression and addition of NOD1/NF-κB inhibitor ML130. Moreover, Adh enhanced the secretion of LPS of A. pleuropneumoniae, which regulated the expression of CHAC2 via TLR4. In conclusion, through a LPS-TLR4-CHAC2 pathway, Adh inhibits respiratory burst and inflammatory cytokines expression to promote A. pleuropneumoniae survival in PAM. This finding may provide a novel target for the prevention and treatment of A. pleuropneumoniae.

    Abstract: Mg2MnO4 nanoparticles with cubic spinel structure were synthesized by the sol-gel method using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a chelating agent. X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectrum (IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used to characterize the crystalline phase and particle size of as-synthesized nanoparticles. The electronic structure of Mg2MnO4 spinel was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that pure cubic Mg2MnO4 spinel nanoparticles were obtained when the annealing temperature was 500–700 °C. The samples had a porous-spongy structure assembled by nanoparticles. XPS studies indicated that Mg2MnO4 nanoparticles were mixed spinel structures and the degree of cation inversion decreased with increasing annealing temperature. Furthermore, the performance of Mg2MnO4 as lithium anode material was studied. The results showed that Mg2MnO4 samples had good cycle stability except for the slight decay in the capacity at 50 cycles. The coulombic efficiency (ratio of discharge and charge capacity) in most cycles was near 100%. The sample annealed at 600 °C exhibited good electrochemical properties, the first discharge capacity was 771.5 mAh/g, and the capacity remained 340 mAh/g after 100 cycles. The effect of calcination temperature on the charge–discharge performance of the samples was studied and discussed.

    Abstract: Background: The Sabin-strain-based inactivated poliovirus vaccine (sIPV) plays an important role in poliomyelitis eradication in developing countries. As part of the phase III clinical development program, this study aimed to evaluate the safety, immunogenicity and lot-to-lot consistency of the sIPV in 2-month-old infants. Method: We conducted a phase III, randomized, double-blind, positive-controlled trial in which 1300 healthy infants were randomly assigned to four groups in a 1:1:1:1 ratio to receive one of the three lots of the sIPV or the control IPV at 2, 3 and 4 months of age. Serum samples were collected before the first dose and 30 days after the third dose of vaccination to assess the immunogenicity. Solicited local and systemic reactions were recorded within 7 days and unsolicited adverse events within 30 days after each vaccination. Results: Of the 1300 randomized infants, 1190 infants completed the study and were included in the per-protocol population. The seroconversion rates in the three lots of the sIPV were 95.67%, 97.03% and 95.59%, respectively, for type 1; 94.33%, 93.73% and 92.88%, respectively, for type 2; and 98.67%, 99.67% and 99.32%, respectively, for type 3. The ratios of GMTs for poliovirus types 1, 2 and 3 of each pair of lots were all between 0.67 and 1.50, therefore meeting the predefined immunological equivalence criteria. For the seroconversion rate of poliovirus types 1, 2 and 3, the pooled sIPV group was non-inferior to the IPV group. The incidence of solicited and unsolicited adverse reactions (ARs) was similar in the pooled sIPV lots and the IPV group, and most of them were mild to moderate in severity. Non-vaccine-related serious adverse events (SAEs) were reported. Conclusions: Three consecutive lots of sIPV demonstrated robust and consistent immunogenicity. The safety and tolerability of the sIPV was acceptable and similar to that of the IPV.
