    Abstract: Mandibular prognathism causes functional and esthetic problems. Therefore, many studies have been conducted to understand its etiology. Following our previous study, which revealed that the major characteristic of the mandible with prognathism is the volume/length ratio of the mandibular body and condyle, we analyzed the volume and orientation of the masseter muscle, which inserts into the mandibular body, expecting that the difference in the size of the masseter muscle causes the difference in the mandibular size. This study compared the masseter muscle of the participants in the prognathic group to those in the normal group on the volume/length ratio and orientation. The masseter muscle ratios (volume/length); the angle between the superficial and deep head of the masseter muscle; and the three planes (the palatal, occlusal, and mandibular) were analyzed. A total of 30 participants constituted the normal group (male: 15, female: 15) and 30 patients, the prognathic group (male: 15, female: 15). The results showed that the volume/length ratio of the masseter of the normal group was greater than that of the prognathic group (p 〈 0.05). In addition, the orientation of both the superficial and deep head of the masseter of the participants in the normal group was more vertical with respect to the mandibular plane than that of the prognathic group (p 〈 0.05). We concluded that the mechanical disadvantage of the masseter muscle of the prognathic group is attributed to mandibular prognathism.

    Abstract: We investigated microbiota changes following surgical colon cancer resection and evaluate effects of probiotics on microbiota and surgical recovery. This randomized double-blind trial was performed at four medical centers in South Korea. Of 68 patients expected to undergo anterior sigmoid colon cancer resection, 60 were eligible, of whom 29 and 31 received probiotics and placebo, respectively, for four weeks, starting at one week preoperatively. Third- and/or fourth-week information on anterior resection syndrome (ARS), inflammatory markers, and quality of life was obtained. Stool sample analysis was conducted after randomization and bowel preparation and at three and four postoperative weeks. Bacteria were categorized into Set I (with probiotic effects) and II (colon cancer-associated). The probiotic group’s ARS score showed an improving trend (p = 0.063), particularly for flatus control (p = 0.030). Serum zonulin levels significantly decreased with probiotics. Probiotic ingestion resulted in compositional changes in gut microbiota; greater increases and decreases in Set I and II bacteria, respectively, occurred with probiotics. Compositional increase in Set I bacteria was associated with reduced white blood cells, neutrophils, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, and zonulin. Bifidobacterium composition was negatively correlated with zonulin levels in the probiotic group. Probiotics improved postoperative flatus control and modified postoperative changes in microbiota and inflammatory markers.

    Abstract: The moment capacity and rotational stiffness of wedge joints, which connect vertical and horizontal members of assembled support systems, were evaluated experimentally considering the characteristics of reused members. Since temporary structures, such as supports, tend to be reused, experiments were conducted with reused members, and the normality of the measured data was assessed. The lower and upper limits of the 95% confidence intervals of the moment capacity and rotational stiffness of wedge joints with reused members were determined. Experiments were also conducted on a joint system with new members to analyze the influence of reused members. In integrating both new and reused members, the maximum moments of wedge joints were observed to be normally distributed. The lower limit of the 95% confidence interval of the maximum moment of joints was 0.997 kNm, and the upper limit was 1.074 kNm. The rotational stiffness of the wedge joint was evaluated using a trilinear model. The initial rotational stiffness decreased with continued use of the joint. The average rotational stiffness of the joint, analyzed by combining the results for new and reused members, was found to be 22.475 kNm/rad for the first interval, 4.705 kNm/rad for the second interval, and 1.577 kNm/rad for the third interval. The lower limit of the 95% confidence interval of the initial rotational stiffness was 20.688 kNm/rad, and the upper limit was 24.262 kNm/rad.

    Abstract: Prostate cancer can be detected early by testing the presence of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood. Lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) has been used because it is cost effective and easy to use and also has a rapid sample-to-answer process. Quantum dots (QDs) with very bright fluorescence have been previously used to improve the detection sensitivity of LFIAs. In the current study, a highly sensitive LFIA kit was devised using QD-embedded silica nanoparticles. In the present study, only a smartphone and a computer software program, ImageJ, were used, because the developed system had high sensitivity by using very bright nanoprobes. The limit of PSA detection of the developed LFIA system was 0.138 ng/mL. The area under the curve of this system was calculated as 0.852. The system did not show any false-negative result when 47 human serum samples were analyzed; it only detected PSA and did not detect alpha-fetoprotein and newborn calf serum in the samples. Additionally, fluorescence was maintained on the strip for 10 d after the test. With its high sensitivity and convenience, the devised LFIA kit can be used for the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

    Abstract: To date, for the diagnosis of dentofacial dysmorphosis, we have relied almost entirely on reference points, planes, and angles. This is time consuming, and it is also greatly influenced by the skill level of the practitioner. To solve this problem, we wanted to know if deep neural networks could predict postoperative results of orthognathic surgery without relying on reference points, planes, and angles. We use three-dimensional point cloud data of the skull of 269 patients. The proposed method has two main stages for prediction. In step 1, the skull is divided into six parts through the segmentation network. In step 2, three-dimensional transformation parameters are predicted through the alignment network. The ground truth values of transformation parameters are calculated through the iterative closest points (ICP), which align the preoperative part of skull to the corresponding postoperative part of skull. We compare pointnet, pointnet++ and pointconv for the feature extractor of the alignment network. Moreover, we design a new loss function, which considers the distance error of transformed points for a better accuracy. The accuracy, mean intersection over union (mIoU), and dice coefficient (DC) of the first segmentation network, which divides the upper and lower part of skull, are 0.9998, 0.9994, and 0.9998, respectively. For the second segmentation network, which divides the lower part of skull into 5 parts, they were 0.9949, 0.9900, 0.9949, respectively. The mean absolute error of transverse, anterior–posterior, and vertical distance of part 2 (maxilla) are 0.765 mm, 1.455 mm, and 1.392 mm, respectively. For part 3 (mandible), they were 1.069 mm, 1.831 mm, and 1.375 mm, respectively, and for part 4 (chin), they were 1.913 mm, 2.340 mm, and 1.257 mm, respectively. From this study, postoperative results can now be easily predicted by simply entering the point cloud data of computed tomography.

As well as being an ultrasensitive and reliable SERS material, MPPs perform various functions, such as aiding in separation, drug delivery, and acting as a therapeutic material. This literature discusses the structure and multifunctionality of MPPs, which has enabled the novel application of MPPs to various biological fields.

    Abstract: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is the best-known biomarker for early diagnosis of prostate cancer. For prostate cancer in particular, the threshold level of PSA 〈 4.0 ng/mL in clinical samples is an important indicator. Quick and easy visual detection of the PSA level greatly helps in early detection and treatment of prostate cancer and reducing mortality. In this study, we developed optimized silica-coated silver-assembled silica nanoparticles (SiO2@Ag@SiO2 NPs) that were applied to a visual lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) platform for PSA detection. During synthesis, the ratio of silica NPs to silver nitrate changed, and as the synthesized NPs exhibited distinct UV spectra and colors, most optimized SiO2@Ag@SiO2 NPs showed the potential for early prostate cancer diagnosis. The PSA detection limit of our LFIA platform was 1.1 ng/mL. By applying each SiO2@Ag@SiO2 NP to the visual LFIA platform, optimized SiO2@Ag@SiO2 NPs were selected in the test strip, and clinical samples from prostate cancer patients were successfully detected as the boundaries of non-specific binding were clearly seen and the level of PSA was 〈 4 ng/mL, thus providing an avenue for quick prostate cancer diagnosis and early treatment.

    Abstract: Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are prevalent emissions from a plethora of industries, known for their role in the formation of atmospheric ozone, thus contributing to secondary pollution. Both the United States and the European Union have presented various regulatory measures to mitigate VOC emissions. Nevertheless, the diversity of VOCs, some exhibiting carcinogenic properties, pose substantial challenges in devising comprehensive mitigation strategies. In light of this, the current study focuses on the synthetic rubber manufacturing industry, specifically analyzing VOCs with high emission volumes and elevated Photochemical Ozone Creation Potentials (POCPs). A total of 88 compounds, including PM-57 and TO-14A, were examined in this study. The Active and Passive monitoring methods, two out of the six recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for Fenceline monitoring, were employed. For business entity ‘A’, the Active method revealed the highest emission rates of n-butane (13.5%) and n-Pentane (12.8%). In contrast, the Passive method indicated styrene (9.4%) and toluene (8.1%) as the most prominently emitted compounds. Benzene, though detected at all points ranging from 1~3 µg/m³, is not manipulated in this industry, suggesting potential influence from neighboring enterprises. Compounds such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and styrene demonstrated convertible concentrations using both Active and Passive methods, detected within the range of 0~3 µg/m³. Notably, the average concentrations determined by both methods exhibited remarkable similarity. For business entity ‘B’, the Active method detected significant levels of n-hexane (45.0%) and methylcyclopentane (14.4%), whereas the Passive method identified high concentrations of n-hexane (37.7%) and isopentane (8.8%). A general pattern emerged where high concentrations were exhibited at points 9, 10, and 11, located within the production area, while points 1, 2, and 3 displayed lower concentrations, likely due to the influence of eastward wind patterns. In terms of compounds with high POCPs, business entity ‘A’ demonstrated substantial emission of n-butane (38.80%) and n-hexane (27.15%) using the Active method, and toluene (28.62%) and n-hexane (25.23%) via the Passive method. For business entity ‘B’, n-hexane emerged dominantly, detected at 84.57% using the Active method and 68.85% via the Passive method. This suggests that in the synthetic rubber manufacturing industry, n-hexane should be prioritized in formulating effective emission reduction strategies.

    Abstract: BCL-2 interacting cell death suppressor (BIS) is a multifunctional protein that has been implicated in cancer and myopathy. Various mutations of the BIS gene have been identified as causative of cardiac dysfunction in some dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) patients. This was recently verified in cardiac-specific knock-out (KO) mice. In this study, we developed tamoxifen-inducible cardiomyocyte-specific BIS-KO (Bis-iCKO) mice to assess the role of BIS in the adult heart using the Cre-loxP strategy. The disruption of the Bis gene led to impaired ventricular function and subsequent heart failure due to DCM, characterized by reduced left ventricular contractility and dilatation that were observed using serial echocardiography and histology. The development of DCM was confirmed by alterations in Z-disk integrity and increased expression of several mRNAs associated with heart failure and remodeling. Furthermore, aggregation of desmin was correlated with loss of small heat shock protein in the Bis-iCKO mice, indicating that BIS plays an essential role in the quality control of cardiac proteins, as has been suggested in constitutive cardiac-specific KO mice. Our cardiac-specific BIS-KO mice may be a useful model for developing therapeutic interventions for DCM, especially late-onset DCM, based on the distinct phenotypes and rapid progressions.
